How to Choose Your Wedding Colours and 12 Inspirational Palettes

Choosing a wedding colour palette is a crucial step in the wedding planning process, that can significantly affect the ambiance of your special day. Along with your wedding theme, your colour palette is one of the first key decisions you make about your wedding styling, that will influence all the visual aspects of your wedding, such as your wedding stationery suite and signs, your bridal party look, your dessert bar, your wedding florals and styling. The colours you choose can also help set the tone for your celebration; sweet hues like pastels and pinks evoke fairytale romance, and a bright and colourful palette hints at a modern and fun celebration.

What makes a wedding colour palette? Setting your wedding colours at the start of your wedding vision will help ensure a cohesive look across all the visual elements of your wedding. From the moment your guests receive their invitations, to the moment they see your wedding aisle and ceremony florals, everything will flow seamlessly to fulfil the stunning vision you had of your dream wedding.

How do you choose the perfect wedding colour palette? It’s not as easy as pairing your favourite colour and his favourite colour together. To achieve a cohesive colour scheme across your wedding, try to limit the shades in your colour story to no more than five. Begin by picking a primary colour, then having a few other complementary or contrasting shades to support it. Your wedding day is about celebrating your personality, so don’t be afraid to go with bold colours if that’s your style, or lean into neutrals if you prefer a more classic look. Don’t be pressured into selecting colours that are in trend at the moment either. Choose a wedding colour palette that makes you happy, and that will bring you joy whenever you look back on this special day!

Take inspiration from details such as your story, your venue, or your favourite flower. If you’re theming the wedding around your love for hiking in the mountains together, choose colours from nature such as sage, blues, or earthy tones to set the scene for your story. Is your dream wedding venue on the beach? Make sure the colours you choose complement your venue. Have your heart set on your favourite peony taking centre stage in all the florals? Then choose supporting colours to match that hot peony pink.
