hi purple rain,

for my case, we tried to avoid those peak periods (morning, lunchtime, off work time) and we only caught in a jam once when we trying to get back from Pratunam Mkt to Pathuwman Princess hotel during their lunch hr. so we took the expressway, which was so much further! hahaha...

other than that, i find it quite ok. my trip from the hotel to suan lum was a breeze, no jam at all.

Purple Rain: Yes there is. FYI, they called it VAT Refund. Its not available for those pasar malam kinda goods. Only valid for shopping centres mostly. Accumulate 5000THB expenditure in total then you are eligible for the VAT Refund at airport. You need a munimum spending of 1000THB per shopping centre/shop to be eligible for the claim. Pls bring along identification/passport to get the form and signature.

hi, hav just return from bangkok over the weekend... it's peaceful there, even went to chutuchak, where the taxi driver told us the next day that there was rally. however, we did not see anything strange except a tv crew interview some high ranking officer.

stayed at baiyoke sky, it's not bad... value for money.

we took taix everywhere we go, it cost less than 100baht by meter, and paid 100baht if they dun go by meter. realise if hailing taxi from hotels or major shopping centres where there's a guy copying the taxi license plate, then they'll turn on the meter, otherwise, hav to bargain before boarding.

overall enjoyed the trip, was tiring, but bought lots of stuff for the new house.. ;)

hi mirror,

purplerain,
same as Christine, only peak hrs. so far i tried to take BTS when ever it is peak hrs, especially weekdays 6pm-8pm.

Anyway VAT have some admin fee involved so be sure to accumulate receipts if u are going with friends.

Christine,
I am still in Bangkok, i had to stay here till August.. and i am getting bored. :p

hi mirror,
actually I never need to bargain when i take taxi in Bangkok and I had been here for 6 weeks already. Mmm, seemed to me that more cabbie auto on their meter, else we will just tell them meter pls. Anyway most of them mistook us as Thais even thro we dun tok thai except the road name that we stay. :p

Purple Rain: The initial form for the VAT MUST be collected from the shopping centre/shop where you make your first 1000THB expenditure. Subsequent 1000THB purchases should be combined with the initial form for signature/approval to accumulate a total of minimum 5000THB for VAT refund at airport. Pls bring along identification/passport everywhere if you wish to claim your VAT. No identification = No claim

mist: Yeah its quite far from BTS. Abt half hr slow walk... If you have about 3 people going, then taking a cab everywhere is cheaper than BTS/Train. The only good things about Baiyoke Sky is near to Pratunam Market/Centre where things are cheap too. Sky View of Bangkok, Best/Longest Buffet Breakfast in Bangkok.

Christine,
Yeap, too much time already. I just slowly go here and there week by week. :p Din really go alone myself becos of the rally.

*sigh* I dun have friends there except my hb. I just have to look forward to more spas and wait for my next destination in Aug.

Purple rain,
Actually the map provided at the Bangkok airport does have the names in thai/english & jap but just a bit small print.

Purple Rain: You don't need Thai words except your hotel name and location probably. Most taxi can understand basic tourist location.

hi yanling,

thanks for the info. Me change to Asia hotel liao... near to the station. I'm going over only for 3 days 2 nights only, got any recommendation of the itinery for such a short trip?

Beside suan lum night market and chatuchak market, where else to go huh? you know the difference betw these 2 markets?

bloomiey

Member
mist: Suan Lum is night market, 6pm-12midnite. Things are slightly ex, can't bargain much, prob 10 to 20% off except fake rolex watch bargainable from 3000THB++ to 800THB or even lower. Depend on your acting skill. Its much cooler. A few massage shops there too. They got night concert...
Chatuchak is warm and bigger than Suan Lum, things are much cheaper. Open on weekends only til 6pm BKK time.

zen ling: Baiyoke sky breakfast should be around that level i think. Forgotten... 76,77 or 78. Anyway there are 2 level for breakfast, i am not sure whether they open both floors for breakfast.
Some rooms are clean, some aren't. The rooms are big, so is the restroom. But dim lights in restroom, abit errie to me cos i stayed in Junior suite at lvl 48. Try not to get too high floors, corridors are dim on high floor or probably only my floor corridor are dim. Not sure... But i went to my friend level, the corridor are much brighter.
I have some photos of my previous trip if you are interested you can email me and itinerary too. Compiled thru this forum with thanks to some of them who gave me feedbacks and more info after they came back from the trip.

Hi purple rain,
The protesters marched from the National Stadium to major shopping centers, including Siam Paragon, Central World Plaza and the Emporium, holding up traffic in some of the busiest streets in the business district for a few hours on Saturday.

http://www.manager.co.th/IHT/ViewNews.aspx?NewsID=9490000040927

Actually I was at Siam Paragon from 2pm to 7pm and I din know there was a rally. Perhaps I can get more details from tomorrow newspaper.

They are going to march again on the 29 March. I guess things will get more intense as we appoach nearer to 2nd april.

Can anyone advised if is safe to go to Bangkok now? I really need advice from those who has just returned from BKK over the weekends. Is the situation getting out of hand over there? Is the traffic paralysed that has no way to travel around?

Christine,
My hb is an analyst for an international company, he is actually on a 2 year job rotation problem where he will be in 4 countries, each 1/2 a year. I just quit my job to follow him around. So he dun actually need to travel much for his job, until he is in this programme.

Bangkok is our first stop, we hope to go japan or korea after this, but it all depends on the vacancy.

Purple rain,
I talked to my sg friend on the phone yesterday, she was here since last thursday, she seemed to be enjoying herself, dun worry too much. Perhaps you just take BTS to travel around or even explore Chinatown like Sampeng on Wednesday.

It is not out of hand yet, they seemed to be having parade more than riot. It just that the sat/sun rally cause traffic for a total standstill for several hours.. eek.

*sigh* just saw this news over at zaobao. They found a bomb at the opposition office.

Purple rain,
No problem, I also have to keep myself updated with the news here, problem is the english newspaper seemed a bit bias.. and I dun understand the Thai news. Perhaps u wanna keep yourself updated with the news when you are here, at least keep updated to where they will be having their rally. I wonder if they will post on websites. :p

Updates:
Protester will gather at Siam Paragon at 5pm on Wednesday, 29 March.

Christine,
He is in finance, more of Risk analyst, dealing with numbers. :p We just married last june, so I thought it is better that we stay together, even though there arnt much spouse benefit except the air tix.

The traffic will sure be at a standstill at Siam Paragon area, moreover, i'm staying in Baiyoke Sky, travelling to Siam Sqaure area will be difficult unless walking or by BTS

Many people are travelling at 10.50am to BKK via Tigerairway & Airasia.
I think best is to plan your trip to avoid the big rally crowds.

Purple Rain: You got the thai word for Baiyoke Sky hotel right? I emailed ya before? hee.. The rest of the area can juz tell taxi driver in english. They can understand abit here and there.

bloomiey

Member
Purple Rain: Not really. Juz don't talk too long phrase of english. Simply just say "Baiyoke Sky/Baiyoke Tower 2" "By Meter"
Thats all. Most drivers are friendly, can chit chat with them too... lol
You will missed the breakfast when you come back...

Hi all,
Some updates, the rally will not only be on wednesday, in fact, they will be camping on wednesday to friday.

The three-day rally, from tomorrow to Friday, led by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), will force the closure of part of Rama I road which is lined with up-market shopping malls, movie theatres and restaurants. This is certain to cause traffic jams.
http://bangkokpost.com/News/28Mar2006_news03.php

All activities and promotions at the stores will continue as scheduled, including the Midnight Sale promotion. However, the stores might be close temporary if anything arise.
