10 tips to help you beat body odour and sweat on the big day

Feeling your freshest on the wedding day is the key to wholeheartedly enjoying the celebrations. Here’s what to do so no one catches a whiff of body odour or sweat at your ceremony.

Of all the little details one has to keep track of on the big day, there’s one that should be prioritized at all costs—personal scent. It’s trickier to manage than it seems. With anxiety and nerves causing increased perspiration, and humid climates exacerbating the situation for some, it’s going to take a lot more than several generous spritzes of one’s favourite parfum to keep unpleasant body odour away.

A common misconception about body odour is that it only occurs with the presence of sweat. While sweat does create a more optimal environment for odour-causing bacteria to flourish, several other factors—such as diet, hormonal changes, medical factors, and skin conditions—contribute equally to one’s natural scent as well. And this isn’t just another beauty concern limited to brides—biologically, grooms are even more susceptible as males have more apocrine glands, which are responsible for producing the thicker sweat that bacteria tend to interact with.

But like all wedding dilemmas, this too, can be fixed with conscientious and consistent effort. From being cautious with the types of food consumed days before the celebration to nifty hacks such as choosing an outfit made out of breathable fabric, much can be done so that one feels their freshest on the big day. Below, 10 tips to follow so no one catches a whiff of body odour or sweat at the wedding.

1. Start odour prevention in advance

Instead of a quick overnight fix, the true solution here requires habits to be implemented ahead of time. First, incorporate an antibacterial body wash into your shower routine 1-2 weeks before the wedding to eliminate the presence of odour-causing bacteria. Regular, gentle exfoliation of the underarms, back, feet and groin is also recommended 2-3 times a week to prevent the build-up of dead skin cells and bacteria. The trick is to remain consistent, so that the cycle of bacteria growth and sweat accumulation is constantly disrupted.

2. Apply antiperspirants correctly

Antiperspirants work best on clean skin, so this step goes hand-in-hand with the previous one. For peak effectiveness, apply a clinical-grade antiperspirant at night before bed, which is when sweat glands are least active. This allows for better absorption of the active ingredients, and gives the product more time to build up a sweat-blocking barrier that will last through the next morning’s shower and the rest of the day. If needed, an additional layer can be lightly applied in the morning.

3. Choose breathable fabrics

While perspiring might be inevitable on the big day due to anxiety or constant motion, there are ways to make sure that sweat isn’t trapped, and to prevent the moist environment that bacteria thrive in. Breathable materials like cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics like bamboo are good options for linings, shapewear or even the main outfit, helping significantly in promoting air flow and sweat evaporation.

4. Select and layer scents smartly

Scents should work to enhance instead of mask one’s natural odour. Instead of applying fragrances to sweat zones—which will only turn the notes sour or sharp, and amplify odour when mixed with sweat—fragrances should be applied to the pulse points, such as behind the ears, collarbones, wrists or inner forearms. These areas provide warmth, diffusing the perfume evenly so it lasts longer without turning unpleasant. To ramp things up, layer the scent over an unscented moisturiser or matching body lotion, which helps it cling to the skin without heavy application. The refined result? Softly diffused fragrance on clean-smelling skin for a day full of hugs, movement and intimate moments.

5. Pack a “freshen-up” kit

It’s crucial to take some time between the ceremony, photo sessions, reception or other activities of the celebratory day to spruce one’s self up. Apart from tidying up the hair and make-up, pack along some essentials that will freshen the body up. Think: travel deodorant, breath mints, body wipes, spare socks and shoe liners, or even oil-blotting sheets which are great for absorbing both excess oil and sweat.

6. Manage stress

Because sweat caused by stress is released from apocrine glands, it tends to smell worse than sweat caused by heat or exercise. It’s imperative to manage the wedding day nerves well—practice slow breathing before important moments and avoid caffeine or spicy food on the morning of the big day.

7. Take care of the feet

With the highest concentration of sweat glands in the body being found in the soles of feet, and the enclosed, dark and moist environment of most shoes, there’s plenty of reasons why brides and grooms shouldn’t skip this step—especially if they’re planning a long or outdoor ceremony. A few days prior to the wedding, make sure to soak the feet in warm water and salt or vinegar for antimicrobial benefits, trim the nails, as well as exfoliate and moisturise. Keep the feet dry on the day by changing into fresh insoles or socks before the reception and whenever possible.

8. Modify the diet

Food releases compounds through sweat and breath, so do expect what you eat in the days leading up to the wedding to directly influence how you smell. Limit garlic, onions, spicy food, red meat, alcohol and excess caffeine. Opt for light and clean ingredients that control odour through supporting digestion, hydration and gut balance, such as leafy greens, fresh fruit, yogurt, fermented foods, whole grains, parsley and mint.

9. Stay hydrated

This is a non-negotiable. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the wedding, as proper hydration naturally dilutes sweat and makes odour less concentrated. Adding lemon or cucumbers to the water will also provide a gentle detoxing effect.

10. See a dermatologist

While good hygiene and smart prep can help treat most cases of body odour, persistent, excessive or chronic odour that doesn’t respond to the above steps might require a medical opinion instead. For a once-in-a-lifetime event, it’s worth visiting a dermatologist or professional who can tailor solutions according to specific symptoms unique to each individual.
