WASHING MACHINE-which brand is good?

hi psyduckie,

i have no specs on the 861 though.. oops.. website down.. technical difficulties according to electrolux..

is it the same? usually the differences are pretty straight forwards.

Either
1) spin speeds
2) capacity
3) no of programmes available

ridhwan82

depends on your budget of course..

if a good buy with no budget.. MIELE. everything else is a compromise.

haha.. else its bosch electrolux thomson. these are known reliable brands.

brandt and whirlpool are easy on the pocket.

so yeah

ridhwan82

well if you ask me frankly..

i would say for reliable CONTINENTAL brands.. that might not be enough.

Reliable continental brands would be going between the 900-1100 range.

but if you are looking at like i think this LG (continental style those front loading type) washer.. then probably might be able to fit around 600-700.

while if you are looking at asian top load those type of washer.. then .. probably 500 can do that...

you are looking at what type of washer?

ridhwan82

Continental Style wash type.
Those drum that turn up and down.. there are two door types.

continental Front load and Continental Top load.

Brandt has Continental Front load
prices normal range is arouns 800_-900 (6kg)
their premium range of 7kg from 999-1300

Brandt also has continental top loads.
all 5kg prices range from 900-1300.

then comes.. electrolux
Continental front load

price range from850-999 for 7kg washers.
while 8kg is arouns 1400
onwards

then samsung this im not too sure about the pricing.

bosch prices are similar to that of electrolux.. same continental front loads

EWF861 is a 6kg model at 800 rpm. Very similar to their 5kg model. Still using mechanical action tuning for the programme selection.

EWF984 is a 7kg model at 850 rpm. It will have more functions and the programme dial will be similar to their 8kg models.

If you are thinking of buying EWF861 then i would suggest lookng at EWF677. It is a 7kg model but has only 650rpm though.

My budget increase to 800SGD already.

The higher rpm is better is it ? but is the power consumption going to be heavy ?

ridhwan82

hi jason.

what are your requirements again?

What capacity?
What are the types of wash programmes that you need?
anything else that you need l;ike delay start etc?

And yes higher rpm is better.. but its more expensive.

In fact it can be more energy saving as compared to lower rpm machine.

Similar to like you know a 1.8 litre car driving 5 pax inside the fuel economy is better than a 1.6 driving 5 pax inside cos the engine is bigger and its not like dragging and coping witht he load.

Same like washer.

typically those with 1000rpm and above the consumptions can be as low as 49 litres of water with 1.05kwh fpr standared 60 degrees cotton wash which typically takes about 2h45mins to complete,

compared to machines with lower rpm say 600rpm they can use like probably like 60 litresof ware and about 1.29kwh electricity. so yeah

800 sgd..

tell me more of your requirements and then we see what models would be good for you.

Thanks in advance!

Okie

I need to clarify with you again yeah.

There are 2 types of washing techniques.
1) Continental style
2) Asian style washing.

In continental washing the clothes drum turns up and down and tumbles clothes.

In asian style the drum turn round and round.left to right.

Then there is 2 types of loading.
1) top loading and
2) front loading.

So top the door opens from the top and yuo put in clothes from the top and the same goes for the front loading, the clothes are loaded from the front.

There are 3 types of washer in the market.

1) Front load continental style washing. (frequently known as front loaders
551384.jpg

2) Top loader asian style washing
(typical of the japanese brand like hitachi, toshiba where clothes drop from the top and washing takes place around left to right drum action. also mostly known as top loaders)
551385.jpg

3) is CONTINENTAL TOP LOAD. this is different from the asian top load. cos this drum movesn up and down similar to that of the front load washers.. but the door open from the top.
these habe similar charateristics as that of the front load. but just that it offers the comfort of loading from the top,.

Loading from the front can be a bit stressful for ageing people. so top loading is most preferred. hence the continental style of washing can also have a top loading for this convenience plus also continental top load are typically smaller than front load continental.

2 brands that are champion in this area thomson and brandt
551386.jpg

so for the basis of comparision.

I will ocmpare the most common comparison which is the CONTINENTAL wsher vs Asian Washer.

Continental washer.
1) uses very little water
2) can wash at variable temperature as it has built in heater
3) has higher spin speed
4) has more speciality programmes such as silk
5) clothes do not tangle
6) clothes do not disintegrate fast as the drum action is very gentle on the fabric but tough on stains
7) clothes come out very very very clean
8 ) needs no use of the laundry bag.

CONS
1) continental washing takes up a long time to wash.
2) if you start washing probably you cannot add anymore cltohes.
3) typically costs a lot more than asian machines

Asian washer
1) Is very cheap way cheaper than continental
2) duration to wash is shorter

Cons
1) uses a lot of water
2) cannot wash at variable temperature
3) clothes can get tangled and causes fobres to break hence clothes becomes spoiled
4)spin speed usually not that very fast as continental
5) do nbot have a lot of specialty programmes like silk, stretch etc.
6) action is rough and typicall undergarments and underwear have to be placed inside a laundry bag to protect it.

which idea should you buy depends a lot of your preference and also importantly Budget.

as asian washer can cost like around 300 or so up to the most is like 600 to get top end... continental style washers.. typically starts aroumnd 800 - several thousands.. up to 6k?

so let me know hwat are you washing needs and also most importantly budget then we discuss yeah

seems I have to choose in top load, asian washer. It's within my buget too. of course, if I can get cheaper, it's better. kie kie..

I would like to wash Queen size quit too.
there are also many brand. don't know how to choose. Any suggestion?

hmmm not a problem

well i would say that if you were to get a asian washer.. then a fisher paykel is better.

but of course with a price.

GWC12 it costs about i think 795 at superstores. you might be able to get slightly cheaper at those neigyhbouhood shops.

This is a 7.5kg washer. which can fit queen sized quilt. and has a high rpm 1000rpm which means that your clothes has lesser moisture qhen its removed and the clothes will dry faster and also it will be better if you have a dryer cos it will cost you less to operate the dryer in the long run with that high rpm.

this is the specs page
http://www.fisherpaykel.com.sg/laundry/?productUid=CC6AB231-E354-3F7B-D832C8FBCC67E125

there is this bit that a lot of people have problem with this machien and that is it has this agitator in the centre of the drum which is like this stick right in the center. though i think this design has enabled it to wash the clothes much cleaner than other asian type washer but people just think its an eye sore.

my two cetns worth is that when washing you dun need to open it rihgt?

and anyway it has a 2 year comprehensive service and parts warranty.. and also 5 years rust free on the body. so yeah its a good buy. but do check the warranty terms again if it has changed.

Hi ridz,

you are very knowlegeable with washing machines
happy.gif
Any recommendation on the kind of specs that I should go for that can wash the bedsheet of king size bed or curtains for full length window or comforter?

ridhwan82

Member
Hi coco_mybibi,

well for washing of king sized items preferably with a 8kg washer or bigger would be preferred.

With king sized bedsheet not much of a problem. Though the king sized comforter.. need to see if yours is the warm type. its thick amnd warm or is it the cool type. where its a bit thinner. ideal is cool type for 8kg washer. though the warm type should be alright but a bit tight in terms of washing.

for curtains would look at how big is opne single biggest piece. and also how thick is it?

i reckon a typical curtain dayligyht an 8kg washer can do fine.

So you are indeed looking at 8kg machines.
RPM wise its up to you, of course the higher the better. and also the higher the better if you are getting also dryer to compliment your washer.

as for the type of washer.. i would prefer continental over asian wash type.

Though the former costs much more especially in 8kg. an asian would be about say 700? but continental you would be expecting to pay around 1400 onwards.

as for the rest of the item would really depends on what clothing article you have in your wardrobe it will dictate what type of washing cycles you require? e.g. wool? silk? etc.

hope these are useful. let me know of your concerns yeah.

ridhwan82

Member
hi jason,

well probably you can get fisher paykel GWC12 this is one of the more opted choice.

7.5kg washer with 1000rpm with auto sensing water level.

2 years comprehensive warranty and 5 year rust free.

change inlet? hmmm depends.. im not too sure about this though.

ridhwan82

Member
For queen sized quilt you definitely need more than 5kg.you are looking at probably around 6 to 6.5 kg or best bet is 7kg onwards. Hence a front load would suit you best.for continental top load the max load is 6kg which could probably fit your quilt if its those cool thin types though a tad just nice.and top load continental are more expensive.a 6kg one probably would set you back by around 1.3k which in front load you could get an 8kg washer with that price. Cheers

Hi ridz,

Thks for yr advice. Juz to confirm with you the max load for a top load continental washer is only 6kg? I'm actually looking for a top load continental washer as I find it more convenient to use. But it seems like my quilt can't fit into it. haiz...have to consider a front load washer now.

hi faithgurl.

yes confirm max for a top load continental washer is 6kg. the only 2 brands that has it is thomson and brandt

Hi ridz,

U have mentioned that brandt has a 6kg top load washer but I can't find it. Could u be able to tell me the model no?

ridhwan82

hi,

the brandt is a washer dryer . 6kg wash 3kg dry. this is the only 6kg rated washer.

model number WTD1171A

while for thomson there are 2 machines. 6kg washer. and also another 6kg washer dryer.

Tx888 is 6kg washer while the TX898 is washer dryer.

HI ridz

Need your advise urgently.. initially i m thinking of getting a washer cum dryer for my new hse due to space constraints ( comparing between LG WD14331 & Electrox EW1292) after going thru the forums realise about the pro n cons as well as the machine may wear out easier as well as higher electricity consumption. I can still put in 2 separate unit if i want to stack it up but it will not look nice.. and oso understand that the air ventilated dryer ( considering electrolux ) pipe need to be near window for ventilation which could be a problem.. could u advise or is there any other model ard which is good but ard electrolux pricing n not too $$. I was hoping of getting 1 at least to use for few years. my household size is probabaly abt 2-3 pax.. thanks

Hi ridz

Read numbers of your post, I understand you usually advised for reliable CONTINENTAL brands like BOSCH and Electrolux. However, have you heard about this new 8kg LG Model: WD-14361TD with direct drive system?

http://sg.lge.com/prodmodeldetail.do?actType=search&page=1&modelCategoryId=060602&categoryId=060602&parentId=0606&modelCodeDisplay=WD-14361TD&model=NOTHING#

Actually after I compared a few models of washers, I found each of them have PRONS and CONS (my personal preference), this make me hard to decide which to buy. Why I say so? Well, let me briefly describe the washers I have short listed as follow,

First of all, I would like to highlight that the below models all are front load washers with,
- AAA classify ( which meant Energy efficiency A, washing Performance A, Spin Drying class A)
- Low water consumption
- Over 1000 rpm
- LED Display

1) Electrolux 1087 - 7kg (Harvey Norman @MWalk selling about SGD1100 included extended warranty to 5 yrs, EW -cover labor/part/ transport)
2)
PRONs
- Reliable brand with conventional system
- With metal lock and better door cover system compare to BOSCH, and rubber has warranty up to 5 yrs (without warranty, a replacement of rubber requires about SGD180)

CONs
- Need longer hour (about 2hrs plus) to complete a cycle for washing (To my personal preference, I really don’t want to take such long hour for washing)
- For conventional system, if belt worn out then it needs replacement
- Make in Thailand

2) BOSCH - 7kg (Harvey Norman @MWalk selling about SGD999 and additional SGD 145 extended warranty to 5 yrs, EW -cover labor/part/ transport)

PRONs
- Reliable brand with conventional system
- Shorter washing cycle with full load (45mins)
- With 60C temperature option (heard Electrolux don’t have 60 but 90)
- Other than cycle time, the function quite similar to Electrolux

CONs
- The lock is plastic, and door cover has a Gap after closed
- Rubber only warranty 1 year (maybe due to weak cover system), for replacement it needs SGD 180 (Extended warranty not cover)
- For conventional system, if belt worn out then it needs replacement
- Heard the 45mins washing cycle only contain of 2 Rinses, which normally EUR washer using 3 rinses programme. (would it clean?)
- Make in Thailand

3) LG Model : WD-14361TD - 8kg (Harvey Norman @MWalk selling about SGD899 and 100 plus for extended warranty to 5 yrs, EW -cover labor/part/ transport)
4)
PRONs
- New LG Direct Drive System (when spoil, it may cost higher)
- Washing cycle with full load (1hr 30mins)
- Water consumption (1.58L) is slightly lower compare to Electrolux but don’t know BOSCH yet
- It is power consumption (1.24 Kw/h), but haven’t compare to Electrolux and BOSCH
- More functions. Example, (Higher spin speed up to 1400 rpm, with temperature option cold/30/40/60/95, Rinse hold, Child lock available and etc)
- Rubber also warranty up to 5 yrs
- Make in Korea (Believe the quality is there, compare make in Thailand)
- Seems Cheap and good

CONs
- Brand still new in the market, may have unknown problem
- After clothes wash, clean?
- How long LG can it last? Coz BOSCH and Electrolux can last up to 10 yrs if use it properly
- May not a full 8kg Drum size (but 7kg is enough for me)

I know it is quite a long thread, but just hope to list all my finding and concern to get some advises. Thanks!!!

Hi all,

First timer here..

I have read ridz message above, that was good. Detailed. Thanks ridz.

I have tried both top load and front load, personally i perferred a front loader. the main diff i see is the clothes in front loader wouldnt tangle together which would allows clothes to last longer. But my house got mother in law who will have a hard time if i got a front loader as once she sit down, she will have difficulties to stand up.

So i think i will go for those CONTINENTAL TOP LOAD. But i dont know which brand and model to get. Any recommendation???

I need the washer to be
- save energy and water
- clothes do not tangle
- not more than 1 hr washing time
- Top Load with CONTINENTAL

budget less than 1.5K. Thanks in advance for any recommendation

hi von,

yeah i have the same predicament with you. im just worried for my mum's back.

so i opted CONTinental Top LOad

Anwyay there are 2 champions (both from same parent company) but with different charateristics.

Namely Thomson and Brandt.

Thomson features top of the line with premium features. while brandt is generalist with features to match.

One draw back of this continental top load washer is that their capacity is not as big as continental front load.

Continental front load can get as big as 9 or even 10kg. but a continental TOP load so far has capacity of up to 6kg.

So there you go.

and also i would like to clarify that all washing in continental washers are more than 1 hour for their standard wash. only whne you use their quickwash function can you get washing time of less than an hour.

So with that cleared. if you are looking for feature packed top load and also not too big (5kg) then you can opt for Tx938 which is about 1.2k. spin speed of 1100rpm.

if you are looking for 6kg washer then there is Tx 888.

if you are looking for washer dryer then (6kg wash and 3kg drying) then tx 898.

think the Tx888 is around 1.3k while Tx 898 is around 1.5 or so.

if you are looking for something cheaper with less features then can opt for brandt.

and also i would like to clarify that all washing in continental washers are more than 1 hour for their standard wash. only whne you use their quickwash function can you get washing time of less than an hour

Just to clarify the above issues( no harm intended)

The OptiA 45mins series for all Brandt washer completes washing at 45mins. (full load)

Electrolux washer( Namely EWF 984,EWF1090 etc) completes washing at 54,56,58 mins. ( full load) if you use the correct functions.

Hope it clarify doubts

Hi

I'm looking for a top loading washing machine.. price hopefully below 1k.

My requirement:
can have separate function like spin, wash & rinse.
for whole cycle process half load, hope to be less than an hr.. for full load 1 hr is still acceptable. my concern is actually the fastest speed for whole cycle.

for 2 person, what is the ideal kg i need to get for my washer? me dun need dryer.

Top loading ???
Continental???

If it is Continental....... then time wise you have only two choices which is thomson and brandt(Opti A 45 mins available).....pls pls pls just go for Thomson!!!!!!!!

But budget below 1k......... ask for some discount and sure get below 1k.

2 person or 4 persons, if you require washing of big blankets/comforters, then its not advisable for you to get the THOMSON or Brandt top load.... otherwise it should be fine.

Gd luck.

Hi twt

how abt for Top loader asian style washing? coz me used to top loading washer... if it's continental top loading, seem like the capacity for me to wash is quite small.. coz the washing is actually similar to front loading right?

dun think me will be washing big blanket.. but queen size blanket consider big? =p
coz once in a while, need to wash the quit cover & bed sheet though nvr wash the quit itself..

Hi bubbleluv,

Top loading machines to me are an easy choice.... I will strictly go for pricing...The cheaper the better.

Being a user of both machines(FRONT and TOP) before, i know that it makes little difference if i were to make choices on TOP loading ASIAN STYLE machine. I would suggest that you go for the cheapest and most HEAVY load machine....

I can only think of the 16kg HITACHI machines the biggest in the industry right now. If you are mentioning about 8,9 or 10kg then, you have plentiful of brands with lots of fanciful stuff like Ag+ features, Strong pulsator washing, zero standby power etc etc.....

Gd luck

Panasonic is said to be more water and electricity efficient. There have the foam wash, Aquabeat and AG+ type to choose from.

However, Hitachi has a better RPM power and they have a air jet. Furthermore, it is using the new plastic filter which is supposingly more durable then the present cloth type.

To me all same. Most impt must be cheap can already.

Does anyone have Hitachi top load washer (SF95 GJ or SF100 GJX)? Any reviews about it? Appreciate any comments..

I'm currently considering between F&P(top) & Hitachi(top).. Electrolux(front) is also considered but it's quite expensive and need to bend down to collect clothes. =P

Thanks!

i've not really seen panasonic. But why i choose hitachi is because it has the "super clean wash" which creates the concentrated detergent (i think panasonic has this too).. plus the nano titanium techonology.

Coz for top load, there's no hot water function (only 1 i saw is F&P, which requires hot water piping from storage heater) to kill off the germs and bacteria.

Quite like hitachi coz i can choose between 7kg to 12kg.. most prob taking 9 or 10kg one..

just my own opinion.. i might not be totally right..
