Dear all, just my 2 cents worth...we (including myself) have all signed up the packages and there is no looking back (unless you want to withdraw and lose your deposits or pay the penalty)...I have helped arranged quite a few weddings for some of my frens and finally it is my turn to arrange mine...the feeling is very different bcos now you got to worry about everything...however, then I remembered the time I was helping my frens to leave the trust to me to run the dinner event for them, it will ease the burden of the couple for that night...so now I am also leaving back the trust to my designated in charge

Get a reliable in-charge for the night and leave the worries to him/her, really this is a professional point of view and it will work..with all the negativity going on before the wedding, it will further agitate matters and you will not enjoy the wedding process...if the ladies always mention about once in a lifetime, then why not enjoy the process instead of worrying over small matters which we will not be able to change anything

For those that are still choosing your hotel, set your priorities on the importance of what you need and which hotel can fulfil more priorities, then you will be able to shortlist and get your final hotel

I prefer the selection process then the actual process but still have to eventually face it...might as well enjoy the process and get it over and done with...

To November and beyond

I went for the wedding show too and has already signed up with them last year. My wedding is this Dec and I must say I'm kinda disappointed with the deco of the ballroom and food.

Honestly the food is ok, but not fantastic at all. I would expect the food to be better than that. And as for the 3 VIP table themes shown, its really not nice and I won't top up for that. I went up to the Vanda ballroom to see the set-up, it's really quite simple and plain. I asked Wendy if we can have another nicer centrepiece for the guest table, she said there's no alternatives and its not necessary because it will be removed once they served the food.

I'm trying to think of ways to do up the ballroom, the default by the hotel is really not up to standard. Maybe we should really reflect to the hotel about this. They can't be using the same deco and themes for many years and not improve.

Hi ladies...
Yes the reason why I last min informed my coordinator to let go of my ad date and didn't even attend the wedding show ( I attended grand Copthorne instead on same day) is I really feel their ballroom not up to standard. I didn't attend the wedding show so I can't really comment but I guess their decor set up and everything really seems to pale in comparison with other 5 star hotel. Of cos the price is also cheaper but there must be some form of standard maintained. In fact I attended mandarin orchard wedding show few mths ago ( they are under the same meritus group) and it was good. So think you guys shld feedback to them.
To those who have aredy signed and regretted no choice but to make the best of it. Try do some upgrading on the decor and work something out with the coordinator. Shld let them know that many pple are unhappy with their standards. Probably they will improve or do something abt it cos it doesn't do them any gd with negative comments abt them.

Sheryce, i also asked wendy if we can change the guest centrepiece because the colored glass looks awful. got the same reply as you, that it is going to be removed once food is served so theres no point. but before food is served and 1st march-in, it will look so bad in pictures because all the tables decor looks bad!and with the low ceiling...

worrying about this also. if get our own decor to do up ballroom, think it will cost at least 2-4k. omg...

Hi liquidzza, Yes i totally detest the centrepiece.. I guess I have to DIY some stuff to beautify them. Many a times, I have this urge to do my own centre piece but I really can't bear the extra money.

I have spoke to Wendy again regarding the food, she said that she will reflect to the kitchen.
As the date gets nearer I'm getting more worried. Ballroom deco - plain and simple, wedding cards - no new ones, same for many years! Wedding favours - nothing exciting, I can't believe my eyes when i say fridge magnets and highligters.
I've already decided to do my own wedding favours. I should be doing my own invites too.. Deco wise, I'm really clueless...

I guess we should really tell the management about this. It's really not good for the hotel image if they don't do something about it.

hi sheryce, ive also told wendy about the decors and favors. she said she will feedback to the hotel. actually the new favor playing cards one looks of better quality then the rest. she said i can check with june florist if i want to top up the themes or add on...which i probably will. then will want to add a candy bar n engage a decor stylist...

what favors are u getting? i went to check the stickies, its gonna cost ard $600 for personalized sweets n jar for 250pax..invites i saw from cardroom they quoted me $3.90per card for the design i want (200pc) and menu fr$2.70...dun feel its worth it to spend these money?

Hi, I am new to the forum. I just visited MM today and spoke with Wendy. Am seriously considering MM Vanda Ballroom as the perks are quite good and it's available for dinner on the date we want. However, seems like there are quite a no. of negative feedback on the food. Is it really that bad? I have friends who have had attended wedding banquets at MM who said the food was nice. Has anyone have already tried their food before?

We are now contemplating between going for Carlton (which only has lunch avail on the date we want but in a ballroom that comes with pillars and low ceiling - we prefer to have a dinner) and MM. Was told that Carlton will have food from Wah Lok but my fiance's brother is sceptical (he had given a treat at Wah Lok the restaurant before and according to him the restaurant food tasted so much better than the food served at a wedding banquet that he attended at Carlton).

Well, we actually prefer Carlton because the atmosphere is good and reno looks elegant and simple. MM is comparatively old (not to mention the low ceiling but o/w unobtrusive pillars). But MM has the dinner avail on the date we want so it's a tough decision for us to choose between the two. We had thought that if the food is genuinely from Wah Lok this would be an important criterion in our decision.

Appreciate your comments!

Thanks!

dear I N, i havent attended any weddings at MM. However, I have heard from a few friends who attended MMs wedding commented that the food at was good. That was why i sign up with MM too. And their perks are attractive. The comments that the btb made here are from the wedding show, so hopefully the actual day is good! Perhaps the food tasting session and feedbacks given prior to wedding dinner will help!anyway, maybe you can reserve both hotels in the meanwhile to "CHOP" your date whilst deciding, or else if ur date is taken it will be too late to choose! (I didnt know we can reserve the dates, so end up I have to go with my 3rd choice now)

You gotta see what is important to you. Does ballroom and decor matter more (Carlton), or perks and prestige (MM) of hotel? If im not wrong MM belongs to 5star hotel. what about Carlton?

I took Vanda as well, and was quite affected by the low ceiling and short aisle initially. but after much consideration, i took them as their perks really won me. Wendy is very prompt in replying email and I appreciated that too! i thought the foyer outside vanda looks nice. only thing is the ballroom pales in comparison but i guess im willing to compromise. some brides think its cosy, but some think its not grand.

heee just my view=)

Hi Liquidzza, I am comtemplating getting flowers upgrade too but my husband is not too keen on it due to the additional budget. As for wedding favours, I'm giving flower teas (rose bud tea and chamomile tea), all the packagings and ribbon tying will by DIY and the approximate cost will be ard $2 per box.
I'm gonna have a candy bar too! I'll mostly have stickies at my candy bar and I'll provide plastic bags for those who are keen to bring home. Stickies are not really cheap so I think its more economical to be on the candy bar than give as favours. I guess I'll order around 1kg of them.
Btw ppl, if you are not taking their invites or favours, remember to ask them to exchange for some other things!
For invites, I'll DIY too. I'm doing my own envelopes and print the card seperately. Estimated cost is around $1.80 per card.

Food wise, I have alot of ppl telling me that MM food is good but the food served on the wedding show is so-so only.. A little disappointed and I have told wendy to reflect to the kitchen about it. Since I've already booked, I can only pray for the best.

I'm gonna arrange to meet Wendy soon, I need to discuss on what deco she can provide us with. If not what are the additional cost for top-up. The deco is seriously lacking!

What will I be expecting in wedding show?

Hi Sheryce, when's you AD? wow you are going to do the favor packaging and ribbon? how many guests do you expect? I went to see cardsroom and saw one birds card i like but its $3.90! are you doing your own candy bar too? nowadays engaging wedding vendors are costing so much more... but i would really like to have my own personalized wedding event and kinda bad at DIY...i spoke to wendy about the top up for decor, but she told me refer to june florist as they are providing the decors. u might want to contact june and see what she have for top ups...

My AD is on 26 Dec. I'm holding in Vanda Ballroom, expecting around 230-250 guests.
Yes I'm intending to DIY my favours, it wasn't in my plan initially but after seeing what MM offers for favours, I really can't convinced myself to give them to my guests. SO I've decided to DIY, already shopped for the packagings and ingredients. Since I've about 4 months, I can slowly start my DIY now, shouldn't be too tough i guess.

As for wedding cards, I'm going to a printer in JB to print my cards and DIY my envelopes (martha stewart doilies envelope, http://www.marthastewart.com/273133/doily-envelopes). The cost for 1 invite (card plus envelope) is around $2. I guess if you don't mind doing some DIY, you can save quite a fair bit..

Yes, I'm doing my own candy bar too, not gonna engage a vendor to do it. You can search of concept inspiration online, I think its not too difficult to do on our own. Just get a table design concept, buy the sweets, jars and scoops, print some place cards and you should be done!

I guess I have to visit June florist one of these day. If the price they quote are not too favourable I'll have to DIY more stuff! Omg.. My next DIY project will be the centrepiece.. still thinking.

hi Sheryce, initially i want to personalised my own wedding card but bf says even if its very nice people also throw it away after that..=( thats y...

i've thought of DIY my own candy bar and centrepiece too. but after some thoughts, i thought buying so many photo frames, jugs, and other decor stufflike wasted leh. after that no place to keep. ya ive got some inspiration board concepts that i want, but finding the props to make it all look right seems a lil tough...=( so headache. im searching more on BS and pg/vg and putting decor to a pause 1st...

thanks for the advice, liquidzza. I've asked the shortlisted hotels to block the date for me. In fact, after a few days of consideration, we have decided to forego Carlton because of the negative feedback we have come across online and from our friends. No doubt the ballroom and hotel lobby are very nice, but like my cousin said, I wouldn't want to be stressed out as my Big Day arrives.

Now I'm considering betwn Grand Park City Hall and Marina Mandarin Vanda Ballroom. The ballroom at GPCH is really nice and we both like it and the exclusive cocktail area. Our qualm however, is whether our guests will have a negative impression of the hotel as the surrounding environment is less to be desired (many foreign workers, and sleezy excelsior opp the hotel). We thought, at least people would recognise the name of Marina Mandarin (unfortunately the ballroom sucks). My htb polled two friends and they both didn't know where or what GPCH is. My cousin thinks I shld choose GPCH because the chances of me breaking even is higher.

I thought it's a rather difficult decision between the two. I wish I cld somehow transplant GPCH's ballroom to Marina Mandarin! LOL.

I'm asking myself the question, few years down the road, after I am married, if people were to ask me, 'where did you hold your wedding?' which do I prefer? - that I was a GPCH bride or a MM bride... In all honesty, I think I prefer the sound of the latter, but the ballroom and costs bother me.. What should I do?

Hi liquidzza n sheryce, my AD is in mid dec this year n I totally not as enthu in my wedding preparations due to work commitments n Reno of my new house.

I told my colleagues abt d food standard during d wedding show n most of them said d food at weddings they attended r not bad, okay. None said fantastic but none said bad too, assuming they r telling d truth n not assuring me. So hopefully the food ain't dat bad...

For d wedding cards n favors, we intend to just use mm de, as thinking back, I don't specially keep d favors n cards aft attending weddings n I think pple r more concerned abt d food (let's keep our fingers crossed together) n location (which is convenient for our case =P )

I haven't decided on d theme yet, think Mayb after I chose my AD gowns den decide bah. Did ur coordinators say by when we need to choose d theme?

Due to budget n time constraint, most prob will not change d centerpiece.. If I have savings from my home reno, may den consider decorating up d aisle but chances r slim too.

I N, I totally understand how you feel. I had a hard time deciding on the hotel too. Have you seen Crowne Plaza at Changi? My gf really love their ballroom, and from pictures, I think it looks nice and modern. Maybe you would like to take a look.

Wintumnsky, I also think I might keep MM wedding card and favors, even though I would as much like to personalise them for something nicer. But you are right, guest usually wont bother about cards and favors (coz its quite standard). I have sign up moomedia for my pre-wed and actual day pg and vg, cost me $9600!!!(and they are gonna adjust price by 20% so I had to sign even though I havent choose my bridal shop) omg...really didnt expect to spend so much on pg n vg initially but i dunno y i just cant get my eyes liking others.

now i hope to decorate Vanda nicer so my pictures look prettier leh! $$$$$$$$$ haha

Hee.. I know what u mean.. I went to crown plaza n my bf like it lots too but it was booked for dinner already so hafta give up d idea..

Ur PG n vg is not v cheap but they r reputable so take it dat u r paying for the assurance of d quality n one less stuff to worry.. =)

Do share if u thought of more economical way to decorate vanda ballroom.. =P

Hi liquidza,

Earlier I was also considering Crowne Plaza for another date but my best friend is holding her wedding at Crowne Plaza end of 2011 so I may not want to also hold at the same venue. Moreover my htb thinks the hotel is too far, altho the hotel seems to have good reviews and the ballroom seems nice from the pictures.

I brought my cousins to see Vanda Ballroom over the weekend. They didn't like it at all
sad.gif
Said the ceiling was way too low for the price. I know we will not be paying extra to decorate the ballroom ourselves to make the ballroom nicer.

So far, we haven't placed our money on any one hotel, but it appears that we may give up MM.

Yes, I agree that wedding cost alot of money.
I'm working with a florist (not June florist) to customise my guest centrepiece and some other flower deco, where ever that I feel lacking. I still can't convince myself to accept that metal piece thingy with 3 candles as a centrepiece.
I've decided to use their garden romance theme (the one with birdcage centrepiece for VIP) and I'll add on more flower centrepiece to enhance the garden theme. Seriously I don't see how the metal centrepiece gonna fit in the garden theme, so I'm givng that a miss.
Anyone keen to use flower centrepiece for the guest table? We can work out something, like after my wedding I can pass on the centrepiece to you at a disocunted price. I am looking at using roses or peonies for the centrepiece, not confirmed yet. The centrepiece is definitely not small tiny bouquet, its a decent size of 6-9 roses in each vase at least, plus other leaves and twig for decoration. The size is around 9-10inch across, I'm even afriad it may look more grand than their VIP centrepiece. You may PM me or email me at [email protected] if you are keen to find out more, we can work out something to minimise cost for those who want to have flowers for centrepiece but can't afford too much. The estimated cost per centrepiece is $15-$20, not confirmed yet.
I think this is definitely a more pocket friendly way to make the whole ballroom more grand. To me, centrepiece makes a lot of difference to the ballroom atmosphere. Imagine the dull colour table clothes, with their plain white plates setting, there's no show plats for guest table btw! The only way is to add more floral deco to the guest table, since the ballroom itself is already quite lacking.
We are quite concerned with the budget as well, and we have not spoken to June florist as I'm sure they will "chop" us if we want to top up more flowers. I'm glad we manage to find someone to customise our centrepiece for us at such great price, we only need to top up another $350-$400 to make all the guest table centrepiece into flower bouquets. For those who are keen, email me to discuss privately.

opps, I realise I didn't mention that the flowers are artificial flowers but I've seen the actual product, the quality is very good it look as nice as real. I love the peonies especially, its very unique with a 4 tone colour in each flower. But on the other hand, roses looks more grand.. I'm still thinking hard, can't decided which one!
One thing good about artificial flowers is that the centrepiece can be passed on to other brides or can bring home to deco our house! I'm doing a tall classic vase of calla lilies to be used on my candy table and after that I'll bring home to display at home.

I just drop my coordinator, Wendy, a call and found out that there will be no centrepiece deco for the reception table. Omg.. I'm turning into a bridezilla soon! I'm starting to regret choosing MM.. Are you all already aware that reception table has no centrepiece?
Seriously don't understand why the deco can be this bad, did they pay the florist peanuts? Sigh.. I'm gonna meet her this Thurs to discuss on the deco, will update you all again. Hopefully I don't get anymore unpleasant surprises.

I did my ROM reception in Crowne Plaza and the deco was many times better than MM! Although mine was a small reception of 6 tables but the deco I got was fresh flower centrepiece for reception table, ROM table has fresh flower centrepiece too. All the guests tables has fresh flower centrepiece and even the cocktail stand outside the function room has mini fresh flower centrepiece. This is only for a small ROM function, imagine if its the wedding banquet, I'm sure they will do better than this..

Sheryce may i check who you discuss with for your decor? I would like to decor more to make the ballroom look nicer coz i also feel that the guest centrepiece of that metal tealight and glass table no holder is REALLY UGLY! so theres NO decor at all for reception table? oh my, im going to hold my solemnisation there too, n now i seriously doubt theres going to have any decor/flowers. seriously, i think MM is paying June peanuts coz there is basically nothing decorated!!!! i should have choose Meritus mandarin if i know...now its like we have to pay much more for decor! i didnt know that guest centrepiece doesnt even have flowers coz i assume hotels usually provide at least roses...omg!!!!

im gonna choose the garden birdcage theme too! even their VIP decor seems very sparsely decorated with flowers. whens your ad?mine is 14.10.12. but i havent decide my color theme so dont know if can share with u

liquidzza

New Member
but sheryce have you met up with june florist? i emailed her that i would like to top up the decor n she ask me to visit her to discuss. think she have some displays at her shop. thought if i can work out something, maybe she wouldnt charge alot compared to an external florist/ decor stylist?

wendy told me that the playing card can fit in the garden theme, do u think so?? i thought at least the playing card's quality looks better then the rest...sighs...

sheryce

New Member
I think the playing card is the closest match to the garden theme already but I opened up the cards and saw the graphics inside. Its nice with wedding theme but not the kind of card i would play with. The pictures are just not the same as normal cards, if you know what i mean.. Haha! I'm just afraid it will be useless for my guest since it will also be something I won't use. The cards was my first choice for wedding favours too, after some calculation I decided to spend abit more to customise.

If you really want to customise your wedding favours, you can trade in the favours for extra wine and buy your own favours. After netting the cost of the wines, I only have to top up $50-$80 for my own customise wedding favours, which I think its still rather affordable.

I have not met June florist but i don't expect it to be cheap firstly because the rough cost of fresh flower centrepiece would cost at least $30-$50. Fresh flowers are expensive because they are imported in Singapore. Whereas, if I were to get artificial flowers I can still reuse them for other purposes like home deco so simply rent/sell to other couples. Fresh flowers are used once and throw kinda thing so its more costly.

Sheryce really ah, i didnt take a look at the card. hmmm. wad did you do for your favors? wendy only offered me 6 bottles of wines if i dont want the favors, and 4 trays of cocktail snacks if i dont want the invites and menu... same for u?

Hi, i am new to comment, but i have been following this thread for awhile.

I have also booked my dinner banquent with MM next yr 27 Oct. Honestly, my comments are are similar to u girls, the low ceiling, old looking and very lacking deco as well as the wedding favors are so dated.... however, we were really buy in by the perks given and they are so upfront about it... Since we have confirm the venue... there's no looking back eh ;S

Been thinking how to make the best out of it.

Val, but i want to fix my color theme so i can choose and coordinate my favors, bridesmaid dress and all..thats y need to know the chair sash, napkin n table colors MM have. ive met up a deco stylist and she kept pressing me to confirm to take her anot coz other couple wants the same date. she quoted me min $2.5-3k to decorate so im hesitating, thats y i ganchiong about the decor! haha...but my priority is bridal shop now..

val89

Wow, u are going to outsource a deco stylist? additional 3K is alittle too much for me. But i m also considering what i can do for the solemization room... apparently they only provide the room.. plain to the max! LOL white seat cover and table setting. for that i think i really needa so something. Which deco sytlist u considering? any website for me to check out?

sheryce

New Member
Yes.. I'm still feeling annoyed over the super plain deco, really can't understand why can't they put in more effort/budget into this. They are not living up to their 5-star hotel rating!

Liquidzza: June florist quote you 2.5k-3k for the extra deco? What does that includes? I've not meet up with them as I'm already prepared that they won't be cheap. Anyway I've took up with another florist which I've mentioned to you for extra deco, all in all i top up $550-600 only. It includes 25 piece of centrepiece (roses with candles), reception table centrepiece and flowers for my candy bar. I'm not sure if I have miss out anything..

Val Lee: Same for me, I signed up because the perks are good and I didn't think too much about other stuff. Only recently when I need to sit down and confirm the items, then I realise how bad it is. The favours are so out-dated, that i decided to do it myself, overall I top up another $100 for customised favours which wasn't too bad. And I'm sure its gonna be much better than those given by the hotel! The wedding cards are limited choice too, only white or red. Most likely I'll customise my own wedding cards and I'm expecting to cost me additional $100 too..
So dont worry, even if you have to cusotmise everything from deco to favours to wedding cards, it won't cost you alot. You just have to bargain for a better exchange deal with the hotel and source for cheap suppliers for your items. All in all, I manage to keep within $800 to customise all of them plus additonal deco. This is not inclusive of my Candy bar which I think gonna cost me $500 for all the sweets and jars and deco..

val89

New Member
Sheryce: I think u r really good with controlling the budget. Was thinking of doing my own angbao boxes, invites and wedding favors too. I reckon that may already cost me a good $800. Further more i also needa doll up the solemization room. I was bargaining for basic drinks to be served to the guest during the solemization, but they turn me down.

BTW, u doing ur own angbao boxes too?

sheryce

New Member
Val Lee: Yes I'm doing my own angbao box which is a birdcage. Did you see the angbao box given by the hotel? Even my husband who is usually very oblivious to details commented about it. He said why can't they give a better looking one, this one looks like a cake box!
Actually DIY doesn't necessarily be very expensive, you just need to put in more effort to find the best price. Lol.. Like my Angbao birdcage, the birdcage plus the flower and butterfly deco cost be less than $40 in total. I did a few of other DIY too, like my crystal bouquet. My next DIY idea is to do up the chair deco, I find the plain white chair cover too plain. It prob cost me less than $40 for chair deco (100 chairs!). So dont worry too much that DIY will cost alot, it can be cheap provided you find the right sources!

Btw I have intentinon to let go my guest table centrepieces after my wedding in Dec, at a discounted price, I'll post up more photos after the event. You can consider, because I think thats really the cheapest alternative to have nice guest centrepiece. I really spend alot of effort finding the cheapest supplier and thus the low price.

Sheryce, no the decor stylist i met up with is Diary and Design. But you buying so many things and keeping them? Im not so good at DIY, so thought getting someone to decor everything will have a coordinated themed look leh...

Val, there's a few that i thought is nice but maybe pricey. i have been looking at them for ideas too.

Oic.. I thought you met up with June florist. For the 2.5k-3k budget that you stated, what are the things that are included in the package?

As for the items that I DIY, for birdcage angbao box i might sell away at a discount just to clear away. Crystal bouquet - I spend alot of time and effort doing, it so pretty I can't bear to sell it away, I might consider keeping or sell away if there's any good offers. As for the guest table centrepieces, I'll try to let go at discounted price to clear them also. So basically, after my wedding I'll have a big lelong to clear the stuff..

Hi Sheryce, for diary and design price, its not a package but she quoted me MINIMUM $2.5-3k for what i wanted n they work fr min. $2k onwards, saying they want to maintain the design quality (ex hor?)

This is what i asked:
For Solemnization (40pax max)
Table decor
Chair decor for bride groom
Bird nest ring pillow
Aisle chair decor

For Dinner reception (20-25 tables)
Table decor with typewriter/ vintage frames etc
2 Bird cage ang pao box
Candy bar
Guestbook/ wishing tree
Guest centrepiece (instead of plain tealights provided)
Menu/ invitation card
Stage setup

So it might cost more then the price she quoted.

Lovedroplets only has a package fixed for solemnisation and its $500 for decor..also ex..

Poppy flora ask me to go down to discuss.

I also not sure whats the market price, coz i guess it depends on the theme, flowers, etc that each bride wants..

New Member
Liquidzza, yea 3k for extra deco sounds a little steep. I guess if you dont mind the trouble to DIY you can get the same things at half the price easily. The only challenge is that you have to coordinate, plan and match the colour and flowers yourself. Not easy but it can be done. At the end of the day, its your wedding so as long as you like it, you dont have to bother much about what other says.
Like initially I'll ask around my jiemei or friends what kinda flowers or colour theme to use but end up, I got many different suggestions. Instead of helping me decide, it makes the whole thing even more complicated. Somehow or rather, people will have something (positive/negative) to say about this theme. So I decided its my wedding so I'll decide! And indeed, its much easier having to listen to what I want and hubby nodding his head to my suggestions. That's all I need!

Certain things like birdcage angbao box, if you are not good doing the craft work, you can alwasy look aorund the forum to see if any bride is selling 2nd hand. As most people only use for 1 day, its usually in pretty good condition. I see many of them are selling their decorated birdcage for only $40. Its pretty good savings and you don't have to worry about decorating it. For the above list you stated, almost all can be DIY, maybe except for stage deco which is abit difficult to DIY.

I'm looking at my expenses very closely. My hubby has warned me consistently, any cent extra will deduct from the honeymoon fund!Lol...
