10 Getting Ready Tips Brides should Follow for a Seamless Morning-Of
Which bride wouldn’t want a fuss-free morning-of situation? Minimise delays and disruptions to the tight wedding day timeline with these crucial but lesser-known getting ready tips.
“A lady never rushes” is a mantra brides ought to keep in mind as the big day dawns. The ever-present chaos of wedding planning—and the focal event itself—should never be enough reason to disrupt the radiant energy of the bride. She’s the divine feminine, the woman of the very hour. While pre-ceremony jitters will admittedly be felt, a bride who allows additional stress onto her nervous system would be committing betrayal of the highest order, against none other but herself.
But that’s not to say all hope for maintaining a serene disposition and moving with mindfulness and intention during the once-in-a-lifetime day is lost. Plenty of prior brides will understand and reiterate the importance of having a beauty checklist and mapping out a schedule for the day-of, ensuring every minute of prep time is accounted for—from the order in which the wedding party should get their make-up done to the ideal moment the photographer should arrive for those beautiful behind-the-scenes bridal shots. After all, the power is in the bride’s pace, not her haste.

Delays and disruptions to the plan—most often caused by seemingly innocuous details that go overlooked—will find brides scrambling to buy time. Not enough power sockets for the steamers, curlers and chargers? Taking turns takes time. Forgot to use the washroom before putting the gown on? Another hassle that fritters daylight away. Want a Pinterest-worthy photo of the wedding gown hung out? A camera-ready hanger had better be on hand, or waste minutes searching for the appropriate prop. And at the end of the day, who’s to clean up the bridal suite?

1. TURN OFF OR SILENCE YOUR PHONE
While last-minute communications with multiple people might be inevitable—think vendors, members of the bridal party, the mother of the bride—it’s stressful and distracting for the bride, especially when sudden small problems might be out of one’s control. Not to mention, incessant buzzing and notifications aren’t conducive for a calm, focused environment. Remember: getting ready for the wedding that one has prepared so carefully for is but a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Stay fully present in the moment and soak in all the emotions by setting a cut-off time by which the bride’s phone should be turned off or silenced, and appoint the wedding planner or trusty bridal party to handle logistical queries.
2. HAVE A GETTING READY PLAYLIST
Background music during the get-ready process isn’t just a performative ritual. Music is healing, proven to regulate nervous energy and reduce cortisol levels. An intentionally-curated playlist can keep the bride grounded, whether she wants to feel elegant and at peace, feminine and empowered or bubbly and energised for the long but highly-anticipated day ahead. Furthermore, moving to—or even just enjoying—good music with the bridal party releases endorphins, making this an easy well-being tip to follow through with.

This can’t be emphasised enough. Multiple power sockets should be available at any one time, because the bride, bridesmaids, make-up artist, hairstylist and photographer will all have a gang of gear that needs power. Hairstyling tools, make-up lights and batteries take time to charge, so multiple outlets are essential to prevent unnecessary delays, especially when all of the bridal party needs to have their make-up done on time. Ideally, one could also charge as many appliances as possible or steam most clothing items the night before, to minimise the number of devices competing for access to electricity.

Wearing loose clothing while getting ready isn’t just about feeling comfortable or preventing perspiration. Tight necklines or tops that pull over the head can smudge the make-up that took an hour to complete, or ruin nicely-set hairstyles. Pro tip: set an alarm that goes off two hours before the ceremony for everyone in the bridal suite to remove items like socks, bra straps and hair ties off their body. Pressure marks and indentations on the skin take time to resolve, and would be painfully obvious in photos given that the shoulders and necklines are often bare in wedding attire. Loose clothing, such as tie-waist robes or button-up pajama sets are the way to go.

Another small detail that could make or break the aesthetics of the wedding photos? The hangers used in the getting ready photos. Cheap plastic or wire hangers take elegance away from the behind-the-scenes shots, particularly that one specific snap of the wedding gown hanging up. Prepare enough wood, velvet or custom-name hangers that match the wedding theme, for the bride and bridal party, so time isn’t wasted in achieving photos that are clean and coordinated.
6. ORDER FOOD IN ADVANCE AND HAVE PLENTY OF WATER AVAILABLE
It’s a no-brainer that the bride and the bridal party needs to stay hydrated and be fueled up for the wedding day. The process of getting ready itself takes a few hours, it’d be torturous to push through on an empty stomach—which would be a recipe for fatigue, difficulty concentrating and a low mood throughout the day. This problem is too easily remedied by the advancement of technology. Have someone pre-order easy-to-consume, non-messy and nutritious food that can be delivered and stored well in the bridal suite, so no one stays hungry or risks delaying their make-up because they were waiting for something to munch on. Don’t forget to have a constant supply of water or even herbal tea ready, too.

This needs to go down in the official timeline. Most gowns are heavy and complicated to put on. Apart from the multiple layers that might be difficult to navigate, fitting and fastening the dress nicely with all its corsets, buttons and fabric requires assistance from a couple more hands. Going to the washroom before putting on the dress escapes the extra time and hassle of getting in and out of it, and also minimises mishaps that could happen to the dress if worn to a public restroom—such as stains, tears or wrinkles.
8. ALLOCATE AT LEAST AN HOUR FOR GETTING INTO THE DRESS
An hour will never be enough. Apart from time needed for make-up and hair touch-ups, transformation and look reveal TikToks, as well as making sure no piece of the bridal outfit is left out, this is a major moment that the bride should be allowed to bask in and enjoy. Allocating enough buffer time lets her get dressed calmly to admire the finished look, holding space for her emotions, and prevents her from feeling flustered or tense during photos and every subsequent step that comes quickly after, such as the first look or tea ceremony.

Fresh bouquets sit in water to preserve the hydration of the blooms, and removing them from water right before the ceremony might lead to wet stems that drip and leave watermarks all over the dresses. Not a pretty picture—both literally and figuratively—especially when the gowns and dresses are of delicate fabrics such as silk or chiffon. Take the bouquet out of the vases at least an hour before the ceremony, a duration that flowers can easily last for without water while still looking crisp. All that’s left is to dry and wrap the stems so nothing looks soggy.
10. ARRANGE FOR A CLEAN-UP SERVICE
If the budget allows, booking a light clean-up service for the bridal suite would do wonders for everyone’s peace of mind. The responsibility of cleaning up optimally shouldn’t fall on the bride or bridal party, as they should be focused on getting ready, staying on schedule and enjoying the day. Organising the chaos after getting back from the ceremony is the last thing anyone would want to do, so a trustable clean-up service would be beneficial in helping to arrange all belongings in order and maintaining the cleanliness of the hotel room before check-out.

Their effectiveness isn’t guaranteed without coordination and communication. Most would be more than willing to feel helpful on the wedding day, even if it’s just to order the food or offer a much-needed reminder to remove hair ties from the wrists. Brides can allocate these tasks and freely rely on members of the bridal party that they’ve thoughtfully picked out for a fuss-free getting ready situation on the morning of the wedding.
