Sheila and Ivan’s Dreamy Bali Wedding at Alila Villas Uluwatu

Sheila and Ivan travelled to their favourite holiday destination and had a cosy wedding where they celebrated their nuptials with their closest family and friends.

Sheila Yendri, 25, Engineer, and Ivan Wings, 34, Tuition Teacher, met at a tuition centre in Surabaya when she was preparing for her overseas university entrance examination. While they may not remember what attracted them to one another in the first place, it was clear to them that they felt comfortable and happy to be together. To celebrate their nuptials, the pair chose to wed at their favourite holiday destination, Bali, on their 10th anniversary, where their dreams of a cosy wedding with family and friends came true.

Share with us your story. How did the two of you meet?

Sheila: We met at a tuition centre in Surabaya which helps students study in preparation for overseas university entrance examinations. I joined as one of the tuition students and Ivan was the tuition teacher who guided me until I got accepted into the Nanyang Technological University.

What drew you to each other? What is it about your partner that you love the most?

Sheila: We’ve been together for such a long time that we don’t remember exactly what attracted us to one another. We just felt comfortable and happy to be with each other. We love that we can be our honest, true self and openly communicate with each other, which we believe is the key that keeps our relationship strong for the past 10 years despite the 7-year long distance relationship.

What was the proposal like?

Sheila: My husband actually planned it to be my birthday surprise gift but it was during pandemic and we were in different countries, so we had to conduct the proposal through a zoom meeting between our families on the day.

Tell us about your wedding. Where was your wedding venue and why did you choose it as the place to wed?

Sheila: We chose Bali because it is our favorite vacation destination and we always have such pleasant memories from our holidays there. Theme wise, we didn’t have a special theme in mind. We just wanted to have a simple, private and intimate wedding.

Take us back to your wedding day. What was the day like and how were you feeling?

Sheila: We were feeling all sorts of emotions from being nervous to excited, but at the end of day we were just so thankful that all the events went smoothly or even better than we had expected.

What did your family/friends have to say about your wedding day?

Sheila: They said it was a very beautiful party and seemed to enjoy both the venue decorations and food just like we hoped our guests would when we chose the venue.

Share with us the most memorable moment of your wedding?

Sheila: We’re honestly having a hard time answering this question since the wedding date itself is a memorable day for us as it is our 10th anniversary of us being together. But if we had to choose one, it would be during the ceremony when we knelt down and hugged our parents as a gesture of giving thanks for their blessings. It was such an emotional and wonderful moment that it remains stuck in both of our minds.

What is one lesson you’ve learned from your wedding planning that you’d like to share with other couples?

Sheila: We’ve learned to pray a lot, because no matter how detailed your plan is, there will always be some factors that we can’t control. Of course, all of us want the day to be perfect, so we can’t help but feel stressed about many ‘what if’s’ incidents (what if it rained, what if we fell sick, what if the venue suddenly got canceled, and so on) and we felt that by praying for the best really helped to calm us down from all these worrying thoughts.
