WASHING MACHINE-which brand is good?

  • Thread starter Thread starter ugly duckling
  • Start date Start date
Hi,
Well I'm just gg to do quick responses okay.

1)
Pros top load (presuming asian style washing)
Cheap to buy and maintain
Wash time-relatively short
Relatively simple to operate

Cons of top load
Wash quality less superior compared to continental wash
Fabric care less superior compared to continental wash
Uses more water typically about 100litres of water onwards
Only cold wash option
Washing agitation is relatively fixed
Customisation of wash options limited

Pros of continental wash style (front or top load)
Uses very little water
Choic of wash agitation available- according to cycle
Choice of wash cycle according to fabric
Hygiene wash possible - temperature adjustment
Gentle on fabric whilst delivering effective and efficient wash
Easier to pair and stack with dryer (note only for front loading continental washe for top loading continental washer either wall mount of top loading dryer

Cons of continental washing
Expensive to buy and maintain if spoil but is generally very reliable
Uses specific type of wash detergent - low suds (now not a problem a lot of brands offer)

2)Yes advisable to get seperate washer and dryer. Unless your wash load is very load like once a week. Even then a seperate machine will be more reliable and practical as washer-dryer typically can dry half its wash load at a time and it cost more to run.

3)Small household 7kg is more than sufficient but connsidering your one big piece item of king sized quilt then 8kg should be considered. Note asian brands offering continental style washing has a small drum size than similar rated continental brand. I.e. 7kg samsung is smaller than a 7kg bosch or electrolux.

4) Finalise your capacity etc and then we see. Between 1.2 to 1.5k is quite tight. Looking at probably 1.8k

Hi ridz,

Thanks for all the info! It's very informative.
I went Best Denki today and was recommended Fisher & Paykel. What do you think of WH80F60W2 (8kg WH Front Loader) & DE60F60EW1 (6.0KG AEROXL VENTED)?

Hi Mandy,

Here are my responses okay for fisher Paykel.

Both washer and dryer Performance not up to my expectations at least.

I would rule borh out.

Here are my reasons :
The washer 8 kg capacity is not nearly as big as the 8 kg volume of say Bosch.
The water consumption is worse than their own ( fisher Paykel top load machine )
Electricity is so so.
They are new o front load so hard to determine reliability for now.
Their dryer has very little feature
And it's latively smaller than a 7kg rated dryer of Bosch or Electrolux and hence if you are going to pair it with 8kg rated washer then the volume is less than adequate.

Here I am presuming that you are quoted 999 for washer and 699 for the dryer.

Fr that same amount or just a tad more to would be able to get our hands on a better set.

Some possi.e combinations are :
7kg washer 1000rpm ewf10741 I reckons about 799 you can try to push for this price at Harvey Norman. It's their exclusive model
And dryer is Electrolux 7kg auto sensing dryer ede77550 about 759 or 799.

Else if you stomach a slightly higher price then yo can go for a Bosch machine wae20360 this should be about 999 for 7kg 1000 rpm and dryer can remain with Electrolux ese77550 or else their matching dryer is Bosch 7kg ellipse drum auto sensing but it's abut more costly at 899 wtv74100me .But definitely yo can work out the amount when pairing the machines.

Let me know of your constraints and I will let you in on the pros and cons of the choice above.

I
You should ideally be looking for a 1000 rpm or above and auto sensing dryer. The rest of the info I will let you know once to respond further okay.

Of course if yo don't really require extended warranty then you can call neighbourhood store for quotation f the above models.

Hi ridz,

I'll be moving to a new flat thus space would not be too much of a concern however cost is as there's a whole lot of electronics and stuffs that I would need to buy haha..

Will Electrolux be a more economical choice?
Is the Electrolux 7kg washer sufficient for a king sized quilt cover?

i understand with the cost. So thats why i am asking which is very pertinent to you.

Electrolux may not exactly be an economical choice but a sound choice in terms of washing efriciency and effectiveness as well as reliability.

If you are looking for a washer and dryer that will do its job and quality is of tertiary importance then you can even look for lesser known brands and when the time comes for an upgrade get a better set. Dont get me wrong but i was faced with that kinda of decision. Do i want the quality things i want or for the moment because of budget constraints i go for what does the job for the moment and then later slowly upgrade.

if you are looking for something that does the job then there are lesser known brands that can do the washing and drying - both washer + dryer = 699 (seperate machines). brand kuche. 7kg rated spins at 1000rpm and the dryer is auto sensing.

But if you want to be able to achieve some form of quality and last a bit longer.
Yes you can look at electrolux 10741 + ede 77550. You can look for neighbourhood stores like parisilk for quotes. For a peace of mind for 5 years then budget in extended warranty at harvey norman for e.g. (the standard warranty is for 2 years)

If you want a slightly better build machine with a slightly more higher price tag then would be the bosch 20360 and pairing with ede 77550 or the wtv74100me. same go for neighbourhood if you think 2 years of warranty is enough or budget more for erxtended warranty at superstores.

as for your question for 7kg electrolux is enough for king sized quilt cover yes. King sized QUILT itself - NO.

What are the other electronics that you would be looking for?

Sometimes it requires a radical mindset change. Ovens? Telly? Let me know if i can help? I fully understand as ive just done a major one but just a few months back and lucky for me ive had years of ongoing keeping up with information so its was just budget issues thats the sticking point so i have content with some future possible planning etc.

okie.. i shall go discuss with my htb with all these info!

btw pls pardon me.. when u mention for eg. 7kg electrolux is enough for king sized quilt cover, does that mean in a single wash (or load) we can only put in 1 pc of king size quilt cover and nothing else? hehe

wow ridz, u r really very helpful!! would appreciate if u can provide some insights on the below items as well.

Fridge - i'm looking at Mitsubishi 2 Door MRF62C (501 litres)
Microwave oven - i'm looking at Sharp R899R (S) 26 litres
TV
Air con

hmm any other major item that i missed out here??

Hi mandy,
Yes what i meant was the single piece of wash is about 7kg the quilt cover. Of course it also depends on the quilt cover some are thicker some are thinner. so if its the thinner ones then you can put in the pillow cases, etc, though i would think that overloading the machine could kill it faster.

Hence washing the cases with the bedsheet could be another load.

fridge wise, what are your concerns? or needs or just aesthetics?

microwave oven - thats a combination one. seems okay. you are not looking into built in ones but of course that being said the price woujld be different.

TV what kinda? LED? LCD? Nowadays the trend seems to be gg for LED. price wise a little higher. This is very subjective and its best to have a look but can narrow down some models.
There is those tv that are called smart tv - internet connectivity
and also 2d-3d conversion
and refresh rate
these you look out for in tv.

Air Con - Mitsubishi? what system configuration? inverter or non-inverter? depends on usage for inverter and non inverter and also the capacity depends on room size.

Fridge wise - would you be looking at increased capacity over time? im a bigger fan of side by side refridgerators over top and bottom, one is for reasons of space. of course we have to look at other factors such as running costs.
This has excellent rating though. i will keep a look out at this model and let you know okay. will take a few days k.

Some thigns we can look out for shelves would be
- shelves adjustability
- tempered glass shelvings for safety and strength
as opposed to plastic ones
- multi level air distribution - so that you know each level has its vents and will cool effectively and efficiently

any other major items err. im not too sure lei. hob hoods?

fridge wise, hmm i guess i would want a slightly bigger capacity 1 just in case i learn to start cooking in the near future haha.. my mum was saying to get 1 with more depth and also the height between the shelves should be higher in case we wana out in pots or wat hehe... thats y i shortlisted the mitubishi 1 cos it has an auto shelf and a flexible shelf wer i can remove half or e whole shelf..

i'm more used to a top & bottom fridge.

ya sure, take ur time. n let me know after u check out this model
happy.gif

microwave oven - ya i don't think i need a built-in one... wana get one wtih multi functions so that i can try out some baking if i'm free haha.

TV - maybe going to get a LED smart tv cos like wat u say thats the trend for now...

Air Con - r u recommending Mitsubishi? system configuration meaning how many units? 3 rooms + living room so thats considered a system 4?
hmm whats e diff between inverter or non-inverter?

hobs - gas hob will be sufficient cos don't think there will be much cooking.. those glass hobs look nice thou.. so don't need anything too ex.. just a reasonable one should do..

Modular or one big piece? --> hehe don't really understand the difference as well.. can explain more?

energy efficiency should be e main consideration for all products i guess

May i know which washing machine brand is better?
Electrolux, Brandt, Bosch or others?

Looking at Bosch WAS28444ME and Electrolux EWF1041.
Anyone can advise?or is there other better alternatives?

would prefer a 8kg front load washer. Thanks!

Between those 2 go for the bosch 28444
But then you need to go for the 28448 this is the placement model for the 28444.

Strictly for 8kg then bosch. Imho. Made in germany.

If you are looking fir better build but 7kg then its miele.

Thanks ridz! will most likely go for 28448.
Which detergent would you recommend for bosch front load?

Any recommendation for fridge too?

i use dixan. a little more priceybut excellent.

as for refridgerator. gee thats tough cos i would prefer liebherr.but its extremely pricey.

depends on needs i guess. althogh i wouldnt mind the samsung sud by side with the twin cooling.

That price is okay. Rrp I think its 1699 or something so yeah that's okay.

Just wondering why you not looking @ miele?

As for that model comparison. Let me have a look first get back to you okay. Out now.

Some qns to ask here.how to use washer for the first time? i normally handwash my clothes.so abit...

just put detergent powder will do?is there a need to put softener?

for normal clothing, which rpm to use?

How do i know which option to choose? (quickwash, eco wash etc)

for front load washer, how do i know whether the amount of clothes i put in is full or half load?

Anything that i have miss out? Please enlighten me.

Hi all,
I'm looking at Miele and Bosch.
More leaning towards W1945 as this has the delay start function. Anyone mind commenting if its worth to pay for this function as compared to W 1914 (the one on promo now).
I'm contemplating Bosch as the load is bigger for them. Will be useful for washing bedsheets, curtains, etc...

I'm for 1914 not only because of the delay.( If I'm not wrong the bosch was28448me also have delay start if I'm not wrong.this model is equivalent in specs except for the capacity)

But more of the quality of build of miele over bosch. And also for its crazy research to provide for maximum fabric care with the latest that technology can offer.

So its a real choice if you would like to weigh more?
Build quality and excellent washing technology or
Bigger capacity with also almost equal qashing technology.

Ridz : W1914 do not have delay function as what is check by the promoter in HN. Care to confirm this? Tts why the reason I'm considering W1945; its more ex than W1914 by $1,000.
Anyone currently using this and care to comment on the usage? A bit apprehensive to splurge on this if can get W1914 at a much cheaper price and also have delay function
happy.gif

oh yes, my apologies, indeed 1914 does not have delay function. But you need a delay function because?

The 1945 is the eco comfort it has more wash feature and also eco feedback for monitoring as well as more eco wash features.

Unless you have a real need for delay function, if not. hmm...

Ridz:
happy.gif
.No worries.
I wanted delay wash because there may be no one in house to dry my clothes when the machine is done washing. Heard from the HN ppl tt Miele cotton wash takes 3 hrs? is that true? and most front load takes abt 1.5 hrs for normal wash....so just in case I have to be away...i would like the delay function to be there

Any feedback on this function to those who is having 1?
And do you guys get the extended warranty for the Miele Washing machine?
How about Bosch? Anyone care to comment on the machine?

Oh my god which idiot told you those info. Ought to be shot.

Miele washer normal washing time is pretty standard. Cold to 40 If I'm not wrong 1:55 then 60 to 90 degree prob 2:50. And that's the longest it would probably take. Most of our washing we do at max 40 and with our water at 26 to 30 degrees that timing will fall.

Or you can opt for the short cycle which cuts the main wash timing and rinses timing. Estimate to be around 1:30 for col to 40? Again it depends on fabric type. Of you have mixed load then you probably will be using automatic plus programme. That's about 1:20 for standard cold to 40 d wash and short will be shorter.

Unless you want to be Eco friendly then use Eco prog that's really 3:00 onwards.

If you think others are the shorter? Think again.
Bosch 8kg washer cotton standard is 2:50. Their speed perfect (short) is 1:10.
Eco for cotton is 3:20.

As for no one to remove laundry you can put full drum stop option for spin option. What this does is to have the last rinse water to remain in tub. Until you get home and select a spin o finish the final spin.

But ideally not to leave any Washings inside for long after final spin because creases will form especially during that time.

Yes I do get. But get from best Denki. It's cheaper. 10% of 1980 so it's 198 as opposed to Harvey's 300+ or something.

U gettin. Matching dryer ? Should. It's excellent.

Hi Ridz,

I still can't decide on the model to get but I guess I will be getting Electrolux due to budget constraint.

What's your opinon for the following:

6.5kg Washer EWF85661
6kg Venting Dryer EDV605

6.5kg washer should be sufficient for king size bedsheet?

Hi Ridz,
Thanks for the clarification
happy.gif
! hahaah...he ought to be shot! What a funny comment!
Ok...I should be confirming my buy in March.
From the way you put it, it seems a bit too much to be paying another $1000 for the time delay function for W1945. Any news if there is any promo upcoming in March?

Hi Mandy.

The washer you short listed. Is a bit small I must say features. Same same. Hence my suggestion of 10741. If budget is concern and extended warranty is not considered. Go to neighborhood shops. E.g. Parisilk. They can quote you quite good.

As for the dryer. The door is flimsy and it's using basic technology for auto sensing. And filter is very small.
77550 is Better.

Just my thoughts. Not worth cos it's an investment and you will use for at least also 5 years you don't wanna be stuck with limited features. As for size. Only one bed sheet. A bit tight in the 6.5. But of course it can manage. Just pushing he machine hard.

Who made hat comment. I sure hope it's not Mickey. Anyway yeah for me unless I need the wash features badly or rather additional washing features of the 1945. Else it's really steep to get the washer. 1914 would serve basic purpose. I feel. Of course I'd rather have he convenience of having additional wash functions such as toys , pillows but still 1k is a bit much.

If compared to paying 1k more for washer u might as well as 1.9k to get dryer. To make it a pair

hey everyone,

i just came across this thread and after reading the great comments about the miele w1914, i'm sorely tempted to get one! but i went to their SG website and can't seem to find the specs. does anyone know why that's the case?

Hi, anyone has any lobangs for Thomson washing machine? Has been using a 5kg Thomson washer for the past 14 years without much hassle.Only recently, the machine becomes noisy, like an aeroplane taking off. Haha. Any lobangs is much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, any recommendation for a 10kg washer cum dryer? My 5-year old Samsung WD6102ckc just died on me last night.

Now back to be a yellow faced grandma and do hand wash laundry.

Hi Ridz,
Do u have a recc for a cheap n good washing machine? I already have a Miele set but want to get a 2nd one for 'rough' use items like floor mats, rugs, etc.. I used to have the Thomson TX818 for this purpose but it's broken now and Thomson service centre advised a new purchase than repair. Since we've been so happy with our Miele, I have totally lost touch with washing machines so unsure what to go now for a 2nd washer.. any advice appreciated.. TIA!!!

Hi Ridz,

I am a new user which just converted from a top loader to a Miele W1945 front loader washer.

I had problem on how much washing powder to add in as the washer dont indicate the load of the clothings I load in.

Can help me on this problem??

Thanks

the W1945. does not have the load indicator right?

You mean as in waht recommended dosage to be used is it?

Which liquid/gel/powder are you using?

Ya the W1945 ecocomfort had no load indicator.

Usually for my top loader it will indicate the load like high or low, so then i agar how much washing powder to put in for washing.

But for W1945 ecocomfort no indicator, so not sure how much of the washing powder (I use TOP for indoor drying) to add in.

NO NO NO NO! You should use LOW SUDS labelled detergent.

E.g. Persil, Dixan, Spinmatic or others that has labelled LOW SUDS.
I don't remember TOP being low suds and using those with high sudsing detergent will spoil front loaders.

Have miele done the demonstration?
Typically for full load you can put in clothes until the upper rubber porthole where there is the lip thingy thats how high you should load the drum to be considered as full load. Which usually means that you feel like the drum is like only 5/6 filled but thats usually the max.
If you put clothes slightly above the midway across its considered half load.

For persil low suds - 1 cupful for full load and 3/4 cup for half load.
Spinmatic also same.

anyhow please check if TOP has indication of LOW SUDS. if not change the detergent immediately and do a 95 degrees hot wash without anything inside to wash off the inside drums.

In case you put more than needed for washing half load, don't worry, miele sensors would have auto adjusted the rinse water level as well as agitation and duration and even perform additional rinse if required in case you put in excess detergent. So if the timing suddenly like increased mid way though the rinses it could be an indicator or too much detergent.

Also the use of softener could also help to neutralize the soap and remove more if there is still a little after the rinses before the final rinse

Hi Ridz,

No worries, the TOP I bought is low suds labelled (it in the purple color packaging).

Oh the promotion package had a 1 time Miele consultant's visit or 2 Miele for life programme packages, I took the 2 for life package think I wont have any demonstration from Miele.

So I will need to take the cue from seeing how loaded is my drum to determine how much detergent to use la.

Thanks

Phew.

Hahah,

okay then its alright. Well i think if you call miele and just say you are not sure and see if they can arrange for complimentary demo i am sure they can still accede. Im serious No harm calling and finding out.

They have one of the best customer relationship management. Very satisfied with them. You can even call them at the showroom and look for taferine, she's very experienced and can assist you over the phone anytime.

As for the drum indication thats purely for cotton cycle and cotton items.

Synthetics its not full like that yeah. it has a smaller load according to the manual. then you adjust the number of pieces accordingly.

Oh ok maybe I will try to call and see if they can arrange a free demo.

We never upgrade to the heat pump as we dont use dryer all the time so the sale person at Taka Best told us not to waste the money to upgrade it.
