appreciate comments on staying at punggol if you ever

live there .
been there .
heard of there.

I only been there once. to go see the haunted house beside the interchange at night...

reason .. although singapore is so small a country but you will be amazed of the culture shock between the 2 sides..

from a pair of shorts we can go anywhere attitude to last time all the tong tong tong .. lol .. i still got the .mp3 man . childhood memories.

east side appear more refine . more cultural .. we eat at kopi tiam . you all eat at starbucks lol .. we talk english + chinese + hokkien but you all talk professional english ...

be amaze ..i saw someone wearing camisole going to jurong point 7-11 at midnight to buy dunno what haha .

agree or beg to differ.. accept all views and comments ..but i do wish to know hows life in punggol. young neighbourhood i guess .. so many young wifes . wee u wee..

but seriously .. its getting worse in jurong .. except the new extension .. our little india is also expanding ... >.<

I stay around Punggol. My Bf stays in Jurong, so I used to go there often.

So far, I dun see obvious differences between east and west people. There are also east people going to petrol station stores & 7-elevens buying you-know-what. Hehe the only minor difference I experienced is that the east people are more generally well-mannered than west people at taking public transport :P I actually found the Sporean aunties and uncles more aggressive at taking MRT and buses than the foreign workers in Jurong leh! There was once, a Sporean old man in his 60s trying to push me to the right side onto the ground when I was boarding a bus in Jurong LOL.

hmm maybe you are lucky to see gd ones around.

some ppl turn 1 of my 4th storey into a hostel for them .. thursday i see them happily come from airport .. moving in .. friends tell them this and that ....
saturday .. 11pm .. ambulance come ... why ? they drink and they fight apparently someone was injured.

urm ...ya ..woah . hardworking leh . on leave still bring your work home .. i always separate these 2 things .. im of 0 value once i declare i knock off.

haha saw the newpaper on sunday.. i was telling my parents .. you all better dun do anything funny outside .. you never know when you going to be in the newspaper .. now all armed with camera phones..

Qwerty,
Wah your block is so happening one! Then the neighbours beside that unit must tahan the noise pollution.

I'm just clearing up my work and doing a proper hand-over before I go on leave for a few weeks hehe.

It's true about the camera phone thingy. On a few occasions, I already chanced upon my colleagues' photos on my students' laptops. Dangerous right haha?

Qwerty,
Are u married btw?

Thanks. Not yet. I'm making my wedding as simple as possible, so no entertainment for dinner. My brother asked me about the entertainment segment yesterday. My reply was "No entertainment leh, how about you and <my sister's name> go up and perform a dance haha?"

Today I'm taking a break from wedding things! Tomorrow then I will continue on them. I find taking my mind on and off from wedding things helps me to stay cooler. When I get too stressful, I will become emotional when I handle my bf and parents. Better not haha.

lol .. so u self diagnosed with allergic of the in laws. . haha ..

nope .. but in the midst of preparing . hopefully everything can be done by next year .. slowly doing it one at a time .. we pay money to invite ppl come see our faces for one night although they do give angbao . but i deem the process more enjoyable than the event.

live there - ALMOST became sengkangian/punggoloid, but the drive there on cte made me withdraw the application. otherwsie once there, was nice to stay

been there - lotsa frens there, i like the whole feel of the place. the travel distance i dun like, cos i'm an orchard person...

heard of there - who hasn't?

i'm a westerner. heard of punggol, but have never been there. i have ONE friend staying there. somehow everytime i think of punggol, i think of pulau ubin.

ya i know rivervale plaza.. I still prefer the old wet market in the old estate..

wondering why they don't build in new estate.. it is almost an institution

like school days mah....

New estates okie lah not bad alot of greens but I would still prefer the more developed estates. Like mamashops readily within walking distance or just under your block. That's the kind of convenience I sought for. Kopitiam/markets within 5 mins walking distance.

My friend in Sengkang was telling me about the 24 hours NTUC but I am happy with the 7-11 3 mins away.

I really dun like the concept of the so call town center or market center while they squeeze everything together and form a mini mall. Not very convenient though.

West side I always find it very crowded. Always alot of people everywhere you go haha probably it is further away from town and residents there prefer more to hang arnd the estate itself. I remember years ago a friend of mine told me that after school, she would go Jurong point. Then she will go home whichafter visit Jurong point again.

If given a choice to select out of these 2, I still prefer East side. Not that crowded ba although my fav is still the north.

Can go invest a mamashop chain in punggol hmmm... Business should be good.

I agree with Hei Bee Hiam... I stay in the West.. find it more crowded than any other estates.. Going to Boon Lay interchange/Jurong point on weekends and public holidays is a NoNo.. because its so congested with "You Know Wat"..

They sit ard in groups, talking and drinking on any grass patches or fields... Worse is, they litter everywhere they go! They will just leave their glass beer bottles and rubbish ard.. Everytime I pass by the open field along upper jurong rd every mondays will really make me wonder why isnt the MOE pple doing anything to these litterbugs? Sighzz..

I still miss staying in the North!!! The air in the East side is definitely fresher!

I remember people talking about the air quality over at the west side don't know if it's my friends or here due to it is closer to industrial area. The estate value there seems to be more stagnant but well it's convenient for those who work at tuas area ba.

i stay in the east most part of my life, cept uni days stayed a couple of yrs in the west. nvr stayed in north but alot of my relatives and also my HTB stays in north (hougang/sengkang/punggol) area. I do notice differences in the different parts of the island, and sometimes i feel like i can even identify who stays in the east and who doesn't. When i was in the west, yup - many "u know what"...i really very disgusted when i see "u know what" holding hands and hugging, felt quite unsafe also...when i go withdraw money at the town centres behind me all "u know what" queueing up..
but now east also alot of "u know what"..especially since the changi business park was set up, alot of companies shift their IT/BCP sites there..go to tanah merah in morning half of the ppl there are "u know what"

the new flats sengkang/punggol areas are very nicely designed though small...but maybe developing so maybe not as well faciliated as a matured estate. heard my friends say punggol sometimes still got pig smell....but i nvr smelt before..

But i like staying in the east find it very peaceful and fresh, maybe also cos I'm used to it...i know my way well, and also alot childhood friends (those who haven't moved away)

I'm staying in punggol, for 5-6 years already, they do have a wet market there.

I moved in with my parents and we were the first batch that moved in. During that time, it was really ulu, nothing at all. But now, it's quite ok already. In this small estate, there are 4 coffee shop, 4 supermarkets/minimart, 1 wet market, 1 Punggol Plaza, quite a few clinics, dentists all these. It's actually quite self contained. You can find all the basic necessities there. But if you're looking for entertainment, nothing much as yet. Got to go Sengkang, Hougang or Tampines/amk. And one thing, there are many schools here - at least 5 pri/sec schools. Dun really understand the need of having so many schools in such a small town.

Oh yah... one difference btw punggol/sengkang and the other estates is that, all the road names are no longer using wat Ave 1 2 3 or street 4 5 6. They use -dale, -vale, -field all these as road names, sometimes quite confusing. Taxi drivers might not know how to go your house if you tell them just the road names :p

personally i like the whole punggol feel... if they can move tat whole plot closer to town, then i'm sold!

Well two piece,

Mostly those moving over to punggol would be newly weds and year families applying for BTO. I predict there will be baby boom around these estates hence they set up the primary schools in preparation... Whereas schools in matured estates are either closing down or merging due to insufficient intakes?

My primary school which is just behind my block had been closed for more than 10 years lor and it's still standing there. Probably they might reopen it in time to come? When the demography is "recycled"?

Another thing that you will notice in matured estates is the demographic of the residents. Much more elderlys whereas the new estates are generally "younger". I do believe in years to come, the focus and crowd will slowly be shifting over to the new estates whereas the matured ones go through rebuilding.

Ya maybe you're right, this is to prepare for the future young generation. But just that not sure whether now it's a bit too early? I heard that there's 1 pri school, the number of students applied to it, is only half the total number of vacancy. But not sure how true is it lah :P

my house backdoor to ntuc is only about 30 seconds. No 7-11 but got cheers.. again 30 seconds away.

And that is in sengkang. Both my youngest and second daughter's school can be seen from my bedroom.. just a few minute away.

Everything is convienient. But with KPE (although I complain about the 70km/hr speed limit), getting to town is now really fast.

I can reached the airport in 10 mins, yishun in 15 mins, AMK in 10 mins, tampines in 5 mins. Furthest is Jurong in 30 mins.

So nothing much to complain. If i don't like the selection of NTUC, Cold storage is just less than 5 mins drive or 10 mins on LRT.

There is a wet market - 2 or 3 mins drive but since my maid is doing marketing, we use NTUC most of the time. I just give her money and she did all the marketing.

I shifted to sengkang because of my daughter's school but now I think will be stuck there for a while.

Only complain if any is the quality of the food in the food-court - cannot be compared to the older estate hawker center. But then we eat at home most of the time and weekend, we can go to other place to eat.

Punggol is just too far away for me :/ though it's really affordable for new couples. People who stay there, how do you feel about the distance? Esp those who may not have their own car...though we have a car, I have to get to work by 7am and it's just not feasible staying so far away (must wake at 5am? die lah)

jadeite, staying in punggol and need to get to work by 7am is tough, esp without a car. Cos i think the MRT route is still very inconvenient to go to other parts of island.

- i previously stayed in east (pasir ris), the people here are very cultured, the air is very fresh and it's peaceful, clean and green, wet market and many shops in 3min. i find that the stuffs sold here are reasonably cheap.

- Move to woodland, got culture shock! aunties and uncles are so aggressive at taking MRT and buses. They literally pushed each other to get up the bus. Foreign workers are everywhere. There were litter whereever you go. I feel that whenever i come back from pasir ris, i noticed something on the air in woodland, not sure if it's a chocolate/ coffee powder smell..maybe due to the factories in woodland industrial park.

- Now i stay in sengkang. i love the place! The air is very fresh in the morning, there are greenery around my place, i can see quite a number of ppl jogging along the road. Only need 2 min to the wet market, koufu kopikam & shophouses, 1 min to lrt station and 5min to jalan kayu roti prata. However, the stuffs here are more expensive. And there are still a lot of flying insects, spiders and millipide around compared to mature area.

i have heard of & been to Punggol. There have nothing much there yet, no shopping centre and facilities aound Punggol mrt station. i can only go to the Punggol beach to enjoy the sunset..

FH and I balloted for the Sengkang flats (Atrina, Aspella etc) but didn't get it. Don't mind staying in Sengkang area as it's still relatively near our parents. But since we didn't get it, probably will be looking at resale next Jan/Feb...and thus probably will look at mature estates. Though the flats are older. Some tell me now is a bad time to buy (valuation is higher cuz people changing from condo/private to HDB) but others say it's a good time (COV lower). I think COV is more difficult to pay and that longterm monthly installments easier to deal with, though you may pay more in the long run...
