My bf is a malay muslim and i am a chinese bhuddist. As i read online, muslim is not allowed to marry other religion other than christianity and jewish. i am not willing to convert. Maybe i am selfish? but i heard there are lots of laws for the muslims to obey, and i am afraid i cant adapt. this religion issue is creating problems in our relationship. is there anyway that marriage can happen without anyone of us converting or i just have to give up on this 4 yr relationship?
is there a posssibility where by muslims can convert to another religion?

for sure he can give up his faith. But, with the Malay community, its more than the faith. Probably, he could lose his family and friends altogether. But, not always.

I do have Christian Malay friends. You should talk to him about it and really understand from his family situation. Its more than just legal issues that he has to deal with.

it depends on how much you love him. also, how strict is his family about religion?

as you probably know, there are some muslims, especially the young ones, who do the basic things like pray, but they are very open-minded and won't be too picky about details.

i haven't heard of muslims who converted to become buddhists after marriage (usually the other way round?), but maybe you can discuss with him and listen to what he thinks.

all the best.

you can opt for a civil marriage (where none of you need to convert to the other's religion) but you have to know that within the malay community, even though civil marriages are on the rise due to interracial relationships, it is still generally frown upon by the older folks.

i have friends who have converted to islam - my husband is also a convert. i have a german friend who converted when she married a malay guy but even though that union ended about two years later, she still remained a muslim till this day.
