Hi all,

Wow I posted the message and went to sleep thinking no one will read it till much later. But u gals were all still up and about.

My sister in law just finished her reno. She used a contractor and the service was bad. Many of expectations were not met, she had to complain and eventually after some time they fixed some of it. I also visited some of the threads on IDs not recommended and it's incredible how many bad IDs/contractors there are out there.

Anyway, I just have to do my homework and learn from u gals =P

My current place has a ceiling fan cos we dont have an a/c in the living room. It does help on warm days, although I feel that it spoils the look of the living room.

Breathe: Depending on whether your unit is breezy or not. Like Mehmeh..her unit is breezy. So don't need aircon for the living room. My place is breezy but a bit noisy cos along the road. so I decided to get aircon so that I can shut the sliding doors sometimes when I want some complete peace.

cos mine is a open concept and was advised by a sales person saying that it's not going to be cold enough. It's just a waste of $ to install in my living room. He told me he can still do it if I want cos he'll be earning more $$ anyway. But I'm seeking 2nd opinion before I decide if I want a a/c in tha hall. Somemore a/c in the hall means must get inverter which is so much more ex. All the technical stuffs bombard me till dizzy. hehe. k i go sign up multiply account now.

congras and welcome. I'm going for my first appointment in 2 weeks' time! Yipee. I think 10k for bathroom and kitchen should be more than enough unless you are doing a very luxurious bathroom and kitchen. You can check out mehmeh's and dreamdoll's pics of their houses in the previous posting, just click on the archive. plenty of people with recommendations for contractors. Will pm you the list of contractors I've complied, including the one mehmeh used for her house.

Just went to goodrich today to check out the wallpapers! spent 3 hours there looking through the designs.... too many choices I got confused. So decided i'll go again another day. Tried to shop for appliances and sanitary wares but guess I was there a bit late so have to go again. Mehmeh, dreamdoll, where did you guys get your sanitary wares and appliances from? Hui, have you shopped for yours?

Welcome to the thread! I am getting my keys this month. Think your 10k for toilets and kitchen is very reasonable. You may want to check our Mehmeh's contractor, my ID (www.aspect-idesign.com) or Dreamdoll's ID (I-Bridge).

Breathe: Have yet to get my sanitary wares but am intending to get them from Nan Wah. Getting my appliances from a neighbourhood store in Upper Thomson (a church friend's shop). Have bought my washing machine, fridge and aircon system.

recommended shops are along Jln Besar.. Poh Joo, Adamas & Hoe Kee. I like Bellari stuff too, but their range not as wide as the others.. But since u're there, do check it out

I got my appliances fr Harvey Norman.. Checked out the best rates outside, one of which is Goh Ah Bee, told the sales guy the price & they matched it! It's actually a common practice and can be done when u get big ticket items.. Those fr the neighbourhood shops may have cheap prices, but usually COD or Nets. At HN, i can get to earn CC points too

yea i think 18k for toilet and kitchen is exorbitant. If you read through the threads, 18k can easily do up a decent reno for the entire house. you might like to scout around and check with a few other contractors.

all of the contractors were recommended by friends..they keep telling bathroom and kitchen are most costly part in reno..which i dont agree.
coz what i am asking is just a simple reno..for example..rescreed the kitchen wall and paint over (without any tiles) & just do botton kitchen cabinet (to create space and open concept)
Dont u think this is simple enough?

Im now everyday scratching my head..anyway i'll contact your IDs. thanks for sharing

18k does sound on the high side.. But it might due to the fact tt urs wld be of 'small' proj, so they may want to mark up? (just a guess) But the contractors & frens are right, kitchen & toilet are costly in most renos

U may want to consider this other option for your toilets.. I saw in Renotalk, instead of hacking & relaying tiles for the toilet (walls + floor), u can have this coating (http://www.newkoat.com/index.htm), which gives the toilet a brand new look.. Maybe kitchen floor tiles can also be done

Carpentary for the kitchen cabinet may be pricy if u choose a costly material.. I think lotsa ppl are going for LamiTak, and it does look gd! Can consider this brand & ask how much it costs per foot run (pfr), must bargain too! heehee
