Shangri-la Hotel

Hi gals...

Im sorry but has been quite awhile and have to go thru tons of albums to locate it.

If i do managed to find it, will post it.

I heard the Island ballroom is almost done!

Congrats to those of you who are going to get a lovely new ballroom! Wonder what designs are on the walls now. I din really like those chinese paintings. :P

Hi gals,

Quite new to this tread..through my AD is in a month’s time. Desperately in need of advice on the flora deco. Went to see Dolly and Sebastian.. Should be choosing the former’s one since she seems to be more organized (more photos to show us). Btw, what’s Stefi?

Anyone has photos to share on the Tower Ballroom? Can email them to [email protected]? I heard that we can choose certain “theme†although Jean said that we can only choose the colour of the table cloth.

Hi Mangosteen!

Steffi's is another florist. Currently it seems that Shang is offering Sebastian and Dolly's floral services but someone mentioned earlier that Shang is in talks with Steffi's to be their third florist. I think decor/flowers-wise, Shang is quite pathetic...

i think in one of the previous threads someone posted a link to a webshots address. But that shows the tower ballroom a couple of years back (after reno though). Can try to do a search...

My AD is still far away so haven't quite heard from Jean on what our options for table cloth colours / themes are. All the best!

hi all,

i paid a visit to Dolly and very sadly, the flowers were really little. It's about 3 roses in a small vase of 10 x 10 x 15cm (ht) per guest table!

Dolly said top up could range between 20 to 70 bucks.

The flowers that both sebastian and dolly are using are China roses.. no holland roses.. :X

anyone got contacts for outside florists? my mom is suggesting that I bring in my own florist.. but tt means I need to start hunting (which i dunwan to!)

mangosteen, about the theme, you have to decide for yourself what colours you like .. i.e. once you have decided on color of table cloth, you can work with the florist on colours of flowers..

of cos, u can check with SHang on what they can do to boost your theme

Well, it's quite a lose-lose situation, cos if we get our own florist, I don't think Shang will refund us much. So you forego the sunk cos of the three blooms per table, and fork out at least $20? $30? for each table's arrangement... which adds up to quite a lot if we have a lot of tables....

For what it's worth, all of us should feedback strongly to our coordinators that surely Shang can tie up with florists that can give better deals / be more generous in the budget from what we pay them for the entire dinner to what they allocate ultimately to the florists.

Not in keeping with their reputation as a 5* hotel to have spare flower arrangements.

Hi Ladies,

after going thru ur opinion about Shang, it does not seem very gd reputation.
It a 5* hotel but from the way u ladies comment, it not up to the standard. It is just the decor or overall?

The ballroom is gorgeous, effect of high ceiling and chandeliers are hard to beat.

But the flowers.... not so lush, shall we say?

Hi gals,

Im sorry but i couldnt find any softcopies of my photos... thus i couldnt upload

As for all ur comments regarding the flower arrangement, i do agree that Shang allocates only a small amount for it but it makes up by offering GOOD food and services. Sebastian's work does look impressive after the top-up however that will require quite a fair bit of topping up.

My friend did reflect this issue to one of the coordinators some time back and they did admit that.

Thanks for searching, Pro. No worries!

Do you think by adding alternate sash to the chairs at all standard tables would make the ballroom look "warmer" and not so bare given that the standard centrepieces are rather small?
Instead of topping up on centrepieces, I'm thinking of paying for alternate sash so photography may look better (ie. uniform look throughout the ballroom and the focus of attention is not on centrepiece, but throughout the ballroom)?

hi gals,

I had my wedding there last year and I wld like to voice my thots.
Well, many a times, it is the bride who take notice and is particular abt the decor, svc etc. I recalled my attention is so focused on nitty gritty stuff eg,centerpieces, champagne fountain, cake table, guest table layout etc. The flowers are so pathetic it may seemed, but hey guests do not even mind or take notice of them!!
Their concerns and attention is on the bride, how she looks and carry her gown.
Not so much on the table centerpeices or how many blooms of flowers u have on the guest table etc.
Food & svc definitely left deeper impression than the rest.
The ballrooms are already a steal and grand in overall, so a decent decor shd be enough to bring out the grand event..,isn't it.

Enjoy the day is the utmost impt thing the couple shd do.

As cactus mentioned, alternate sash for chairs will give a gd idea to make the ballroom looked warmer..however, it's really not worth to waste money on this esp. it will cost $2 per sash...taking into consideration that you will be having many tables!! I feel you can put the money into better use, eg. extend your stay in the hotel or upgrade menu..etc.

Just my 2cents worth! Hope u gals enjoy the process..and happily married..;p

Hi cactus,

Biba took the words out of my mouth...

Another way to make the ballroom look warmer is to make use of candle lights.

It does help to soften with the help of dim lightnings

Island ballroom, the bigger one, was under renovation last month. Not sure if renovation would be completed soon or if it has been completed already.

Hi gals,

No problem, i thot it's good to share experiences ard so that others can learn or do better than what we have done in our last preparations!

I do hope all BTB can be a Happy bride and enjoy this special moment in their life!

cheers...

Hi all BTB,

I'm going to place a deposit with Shang next month. But unsure of what to negotiate for? Any BTB kind enough to share your package details with me? I will be holding my banquet in the Tower Ballroom.

Hi Sally,

Common things to negotiate for will be:

Xtra Nite Stay in Shang
Xtra Parking Coupons
Request for a day room (If you are not given any)
Waiver of cockage fees(If you intend to bring in on your own)
Ask them to give you a btl of wine for every confirm table(Not sure what wedding package you having)

There can be many things that you can ask for but it doesn't means that Shang will have to give it to you.

At the end of it, your bargaining power depends on how many tables you holding at Shang. The more tables you have(Tower) the better perks Shang can give you.

Hi ladies,
Just went to see Shang last sat. And I must say the new Island ballroom is very very nice. We have tentatively book the date we want for next yr. So That settle 1 thing off my check list.

Sorry Pinkie,
I din take any pics. There was a function that day when we went to view. And it really capture our heart. My AD is next yr Xmas.
When urs?

so romantic to propose on Christmas.

('',)

pro, I tried negotiating for more using the number of tables but it didn't work for me. sad case. It was more like all prices were fixed. Exchanging for stuff was an easier task tho.

Hi pinkiez,
Nice to see you here!
Yeah.. prices are fixed, but exchanging for stuff is easier. You may want to request for a day use room too. We were given one. Think it's one of the standard "freebies". We exchanged one bottle of wine per table for waiver of corkage of own wines/liquor. We decided our guests are likely to consume at least 2 bottles per table.. so might as well buy from outside so that guests will only have 1 type of wines or 1 red 1 white instead of 2 reds, or 2 whites throughout the dinner.

hi gals,

I'm still considering whether to get the corkage waiver in place of the free wine per table. Still haven't thought properly on how much wine my guests are likely to consume, so not sure what would be more worth it.

think colleagues will drink more and relatives less, so should even out? that would mean taking shang's wine would be more worth it...

I think it depends alot on your guests. For mine, both friends and relatives (cos very few children) drink quite alot. Past experience - 2 bottles to 2.5 bottles. Also it depends on whether weekday or weekend weddings. Normally, pple drink less on weekdays cos next day may have to work.

I'm getting my wines from an uncle who runs an export biz .. so it makes more $ sense for me to get corkage waiver cos wines would be cheaper than per bottle from Shang's price list. Also, I dun think I want pple to taste more than 1 type of red or white wine..cos they will definately guess we ran out of wines.. some of my relatives and friends are good at telling apart wines... so dun want to embaress my fiance and myself if wines run out.

Oh, 1 bottle of wine is about 5 standard portions. So if you have about 3 or 4 wine drinkers per table, taking Shang's wine is certainly sufficient. Got to make provision for some pple who may "top up" their wines during the dinners.

Of course, we can instruct Shang not to serve "standard portion".. but it may make us/the hosts, and the hotel look bad esp if your guests are avid drinkers and they know how much to expect in a "standard portion". They won't expect a hotel like Shang to be stingy on wine quantity and can only guess that the hosts/we want to stinge...

Thanks cactus for sharing!

Yah.. shang's price list is v exp!! Charging $45 for every extra bottle of house red when the same house red is about $15-18 per bottle from supplier.

Pinkiez,

what stuff did you manage to exchange for? I explored exchanging the favours for other stuff but was told it wouldn't count for much...

yup, Shang's wines are very ex.. alot of hotels like Shang and Fullerton mark up the prices...

Melanie told me the favours are about $1.50/per piece.... not sure if want to exchange eventually. Also dun know what to exchange for.

My friend is getting married at Shang on 30 Dec so shall go and recce!

Another friend getting married on 20 Jan next yr there but can't attend cos a closer friend also getting married that day @ another hotel....

Yup I've gone to view the ballrooms.

Haven't really negotiated much.

We just asked about the parking coz we have lotsa relatives who drive.

Day use room included so didn't go further.

Hmmm what else ... oh and we also tried to negotiate for an upgrade of room. - FAILED (haha)

Its true that the wines are quite expensive.

Did anyone get a peek into their waterfall / garden terrace? I'm look at a solemnization venue but if its going to be 4 concrete walls surrounding us then I'm not that interested. Esp so now that the IMF is here, can't view the bridal suite & waterfall/garden terrace.

I wasn't able to view the bridal suite either... think it's not that impressive, just slightly larger than a standard room.

Heard that the waterfall terrace is nice though. Seen mag pix of it, and it's definitely not 4 concrete walls... afterall, Shang's supposed to be the botanic gardens in the middle of orchard rd.

Were they flexible abt the parking? cos the contract says 30% right? and sth abt $3 for each extra....

Hiya,

My planner was quite flexible in the carpark coupons. She told us that additional parking coupons could be issued after the dinner. She gave us the impression that it was not chargeable tho.

But you raised a good point about the additional charge. I'm going to ask her if any charges for additional carpark coupons the next time i see her.

Just to share, I think 30% parking should be sufficient for relatives... so assume each family has 4 people, that would only requre 25% parking coupons. It's usually friends who attend weddings individually, or in pairs. Usually, families are at least 3 pple. Some as much as 5 pax (3 kids, 2 adults).

cactus - left u a pte msg

I guess our situation is a lil different coz FH has lotsa car kakis ... and on top of that business associates eg a couple to one car ...

These considerations made us worried abt parking. But with so many things to think about, I wouldn't want parking to be a headache. Hehe.

Hi pinkiez, thanks for your pm.
happy.gif

Actually, giving parking coupons to all guests is a good thing but not "must have", I feel. As long as we don't "offend" anyone when we give/don't give. Like, if we decide to give 1 colleague, we must make sure all colleagues who want parking coupons must be given. I think this is more important than ensuring that every single guest has a parking coupon... that's what I feel lah... For my engagement dinner at Fullerton, I managed to exchange things for parking coupons.. so in the end got 45%.. after the dinner.. I had about 14 parking coupons not used... hee. I think everyone with a car had a coupon. I doubt I can get more than 30% from Shang.. so don't think I will try too hard on this. So must be careful not to offend anyone unwittingly.

Yah, parking coupons are tricky esp since hotel parking is expensive.

I think since Shang is not easily accessible by public transport and most ppl will be quite dressed up they will either come in cars of taxis. Hopefully some of them carpool... otherwise we'll just have to exercise more charm on our coordinators to be flexible with extra coupons when the first 30% run out...

Alternatively we can spread via word of mouth - come early cos coupons on first come first serve basis. Give ppl more incentive not to be late! ;)
