Currently im workin in private company in design firm. which e pay is ok. but the manager is unreasonable. she always ask me to do this n that, ( i dun mind doing and helping her to do the things) but she is super secertive. she expect me to do things but scare that i will review the company issue. which im incharge of everythings in the office. Admin, accounts, IT, recep, small small issue all are handle by me.

i cant tahan my unreasonable manager. so i went to look for another jobs.

but now i have been selected by a government sector. which downgrade my pay to about $500 low. should i accept the job? or click on to my unreasonable manager?
which actually they say government sector have lots of benefits.

isnt it true>

ask about the increment rate...is there a usual fixed increment?

government sector job (if is civil service lah) got bonuses here and there, there is also a constant salary hike to 'match rates of private sector', so I dunno...maybe quite ok lah.

btw how much bonus does your company pay? How about other private firms in same sector...did u check it out?

continue searching... settling for the gov job is like getting attached to another guy just becos u dun like your current bfren... it's a Push factor, not a pull factor...

only leave your job when u have BOTH, find your pull factor, so keep searching...

"can't tahan" is an emotional aspect... once u learn to deal with it, u should be able to hang on a little longer... look at a wider spectrum and not be focused on how she's treating u.

hweebs: incresement? it depends on e company and e manager n boss. they happen they will increase if not for years there will be no increasement. and from my side i got 40 over staffs. now left till about 30 over n less. the turn over rates is very high. cause our side the staff feel that e company did not pay them well. and do not have much benefits. bonus also depends on e company, as got earn then got bonus. no earn meaning NO.

Powder: how come u say gov job is another push factor? from my friend working there. she say it quite ok. got various benefits.

but then i reli cant go on with my manager lo.
1) got fault push to me. im a IT idiot, she expect me to fix all the IT issue lo. when boss PC spoil she ask me to go fix. then when boss angry, she can cal me in and say boss face is angry. im not a IT person. and office she is e IT. she cant fix, she ask me. but then i always anyhow fix.

2) then all the PC things, i have make till messy. but then cant blame me. even since im here. the PC is already mess up. and she herself have nvr have fault. always push to others. sayin oh must be that old gals. but eventually, there is a moments of 1yrs without admin. when i came in. here is all mess. i help to clean up.

3) all staff dun have proper stationary. they expect this n tt. but manager always did not agree cause say company expenses. where my manager n boss can use the company to pay credits bills.

im happy to be here. cause from the moments i start work at 9am i can watch show till my knock off. and happy wat time go out to lunch and teabreak here n there.
but then i scare if im keep on staying here. next yr office moving. i will be strucks again. cause there will be a lot of things for me to clear. those rubbish which are not their i have to clean up. cause im the rubbish over here. everybody in e office can push to me.

Wynn,

Actually, most private sector will peg the bonus with the corporate performance. Nothing really surprising about that at all. Its a biz. How to dish out bonus when there is no profit?

Your job scope is really general duty than anything. Don't just look at government sectors. Go for larger corporations. They are likely to be more professional. Its normally the small firms that exploit their staffs because their resources are easily stretched and they just make do with whatsoever staffs they have.

Anyway, it might not be a good timing to change job while still studying your course and at the same time wanting to divorce. Things can wait. You should come up with a proper planning and not make decisions in the spur of moment. Be it marriage or career.

miloice, for my marriage i did not want to talk more. i want to settle my career path 1st. i tgt of goin to gov sector. to take up free courses 1st lo. cause i did not have any spare cash to study. might as well go study for free 1st then after that change to private co.
but then $500 downgrade reli is a lot lo.
how do u all think?

Wynn, private sectors do pay for skills upgrading as well. Regardless gov or private, your training should be relevant to your job else, the HR will not approve. They have a fixed budget for training and you probably cannot exceed that.

When you talk about benefits, I was thinking more of health, insurance, leave and family benefits instead.

Why choose between options A & B only? Explore more before deciding.

$500 is a subjective amount. If you are drawing a $100k package, less $500 monthly is only $6k lesser. That's only 6% of the total. But, if you are on a $40k package, then its a 15%.

Ermm.. Govt Sector don't "suka suka" send staff for free course to upgrade themselves. Usually based on performance and see if you are "worth" grooming to be the potential one.. Think got to sign bonds too

I agreed with Milo. Look out for those Companies that provide benefits in term of Health and Family. Leaves does play an important part too... Juz like 7 days compare to 24 days.. Which one you prefer?

ever tot of asking ur potential employer to give u increment upon completing ur probation?

the $500 deficit may be smaller by then...no harm trying.

icemilo: good calculation. ya for my company i do not have any upgrade issue. which my company is super stingy.
i would like to explorer more too. but i went for a few interview. most of them do not want to hire me because of my 2kids.
that they say u will need to go home on time? to spent time with kids?
cause i told them i got an elder kid which i need to fetch her on child care. then told me that i wun be able to commit the jobs.
cause from my current i been taking leave often for my kids. when they sick, and etc. so when i went interview. i really cant commit anything to them.
it quite hard for me.

Wynn,

i'm not saying the gov job is a push factor... i'm saying your current job is a push factor... it pushes u to look outside.

what i'm asking u is to find a job with a pull factor... obviously the gov job u looking at - isn't a pull factor...

"from my friend working there. she say it quite ok. got various benefits"
- erm, is this how u decide your career path? who is your fren? what level is she? what job is she doing? which agency is she? what goals does she have? what sort of person is she?...

"quite ok" is a comment that anyone can make abt maybe 10,000 companies out there... i dun consider that as an advice nor anything credible to place my career decision on.

Also, i think that u need to upgrade your level of thinking... wanting to leave a company over issues like pc-repair and justifying with stationary Issues is something u should NEVER reveal in an interview... it is very mundane and idle, it shows u have alot of time to be bothered with very trivial issues.

u should read more, start with the internet... instead of watching shows on your pc. the word is "increment", it is something All sporeans look forward to... u should not be spelling the word Wrong, i can't imagine if u need to pronounce it.

at this point, i believe a gov job may be best for u If u can find it. since u dun seem keen to upgrade with your own initiative and u're definitely not pro-active until problems occur then u might try to escape.

Pls take my criticsm positively, becos from what has been spoken so far, i dun think u're too keen on a career either... so maybe just ignore me.

Wynn, frankly you lack the EQ during interview. The problem isn't with your commitment with your family. Its the way you answered is as good as telling them you are not suitable.

If you want the job, you gotta sell yourself without deception. E.g. you could have replied that you are productive & able to handle your time well. You could emphasize your need for a balance family and career life without screwing up your interview.

I take leave for my family matters too. That is never an issue. We can be flexible, no need to abide to 9-6 timings only. Sometimes, I leave office few hours earlier. And other time having conf call into the night. Its about the job you do and knowing how to prioritize in order not to impact the biz. You OT only when you need to. And when you need to settle your family stuffs, do it. That's what employers are looking for. People with more maturity and biz sense than just following instructions.

Unless your career prospects is production operator kind of role where its all about time slots and getting the plant running productively all the time.

Wynn, if you are really serious about plotting your career path, you should look for vertical upward move, not lateral or vertical downward move. Also, you have to think about where and how you can move from this new job in the future, so that you won't get stuck in that job.

Sometimes I wonder why people look at "benefits"..

and they fail to "quantify" these benefits.. you should always quantify them.

some work to live

others live to work

depends on whether you just want a job for living
or you think the job is your career.......

in both cases she should not consider to remain the current job long term. There isn't any prospects. What's $500 in the long run?

wynn,

I was from MOE. We were advised that there is usually a $100-$150 pay increment per year, and usually about 1-3 years to jump at lower grade..at a higher level, may need 5 years or more to jump grade. We had 1st year probation/training kind of thing, once completed, we had increment...tat's what i mean by your govt sector increment factor..

by bonus...what have u received so far?
for govt, so far the max i got is 2.75months in 1 year lar..private side better or worse?

Hweebs, it better than my company. Its cap at 15% for engineers, 20% for managers and 40% for senior management. I negotiate on annual package instead. I pushed for mid year review because I found the annual increment insufficient for my profile and contributions.

izzit? Hmm...i know some depts of civil service pays well lar, but dunno how it's like for the rest of the world :P anyway, now none of my business liao...wynn where are u applying ah? maybe then we know if the increments etc apply as well

for myside. the best i have gotten was last year aws+6mths variable.

just 2weeks back i talked to a US MNC. they are willing to pay 40% more mthly but the yr end incentives werent that enticing aws+1mth variable is a standard. plus the work scope wouldnt give me enough exposure thus rejected the offer.

sometimes wat u dun know, doesn't hurt, and might be better... but in case u're one of those who would eventually like to see bonuses from 6mths to 12mths to even 24mths or more... then i'll just say that they exist. but have to look at yourself first, and look at your contribution. there's no free lunch in this world.

Wynn, govt sectors pay by your qualifications then experience mainly while private sectors are generally more keen on your job experience. I really feel u shld upgrade yourself or further studies for better prospects. I'm a govt servant as well. At my peak, I get 5mths bonus. Lull period I get abt 2.5. Must say that it's not bad but of cos there are ppl in the private sector who earns more. U got to weigh what u want in life. If u have family commitments, then can't ask for much too.
