show care and concern whenever u can... like if ur PIL is not feeling well, be sure to follow up by asking them how r they, the next time u see them.

if u see them cooking somethg, ask them if need help. of cos, they will say no need but knowing that u may want to help makes them happy.

buy some goodies for them once in a while.

treat them like your own parents.. whether i'm over at FIL's or MIL's, i make an attempt to help out with dinner and with cleaning up afterwards .. i sms my MIL whenever i have something to share with her about her grandchildren .. she calls weekly, sends email and postcards.

i get to see my PILs maybe once a year when we go back for visit since they don't live here .. very lucky to have nice PILs who treat me like one of their own - perhaps it also helps that i'm not a DIL from hell .. and that absence, or in this case, distance makes the heart grow fonder - lol.

it's also great that my own parents get along well with the husband's parents and their partners - my mom took my MIL shopping in JB before .. and when we were back there, there was once when my MIL and my mom disappeared for a whole afternoon - turned out that my MIL took my mom to her friend's place for tea .. :D

See things from their view. Understanding aunties will have auntie mentality. So, expect that. Don't get upset and resist auntie behavior.

And, don't just act blur. Be really numb to their insensitivity. All these start from within. Take initiative to approach them without expectation.

My partner told me to be myself and relax when i went for my first meeting-parent-session. As what Cuclainne said, treat them like your own parents. Good manners is number 1 and be more auto (proactive). One thing is that as we are from different culture and background, misunderstandings do arise especially when i first gotta know them. Hence for me it is important to communicate with my partner to know their behaviour and likings, it's still his folks and he knows them best.
