Dear Syt, why didn't you ask this question in the Christian Brides Forum? Haha...my hubby is a podiatrist at a local hospital, he specialises in treating feet problems. The below is his solution for those with this problem.
Background:
Fungal nails can be extremely stubborn to cure and can often reoccur or spread to other nails. The "infection" itself has not serious implications on the rest of the body, the only real damage being to the nail plate. The nail will appear thickened, white or yellow discolouration, brittle or crumbly.
The Cause:
Fungal toenail infections are caused by the same fungal organisms that give fungal skin conditions(AKA tinea, athlete's foot, ringworm, Hongkong Feet). They are infectious and can be acquired through contact with contaminated surfaces including nail polish brushes.
Treatment:
You have several options.
1. Do not treat it at all - as these infections only affect the nails, some people choose to leave them, especially since it is such a stubborn condition to treat.
2. Over the counter topical medications. There are a range of "paints" such as Daktarin tincture which you can apply, cost about $10. Firstly, trim away the infected nail as much as possible. When applying the tincture, make sure you file away the layer of paint from the previous application otherwise the new app will not penetrate.
Something else which you may find equally or more effective is to use teatree oil. You can diulte it in some water and soak your feet in it as well as applying it directly to the nail.
There is also a product called Loceryl which I'm not sure is available in Singapore which costs around $100, this is said to be the most effective topical treatment.
3. Removal of nail - this is quite effective but you must undergo minor surgery under local anaesthetic. You can return back to work next day with some painkillers. Bear in mind that the nail will take anywhere from 6-9 months to completely grow back.
4. Oral antifungals - these are available but not commonly prescribed as they may cause some unwanted side effects eg, stomach upset.
Ok hope this helps.
