I have it last time, caused by injuries that bleed underneath the nail. You can buy the "Anti-fungal cream" from guardian at abt $4 only.

hi
I had a fungal infection in my toe nail hat wont go away for like a year. My pedicurist recommended an antifungal liquid that u can drip into your nail bed. I tried that for a year. It started to hurt one day and i went straigh to the doc to yank the nail out..best decision i ever made..now i have a brand new toe nail

Dear Syt, why didn't you ask this question in the Christian Brides Forum? Haha...my hubby is a podiatrist at a local hospital, he specialises in treating feet problems. The below is his solution for those with this problem.

Background:
Fungal nails can be extremely stubborn to cure and can often reoccur or spread to other nails. The "infection" itself has not serious implications on the rest of the body, the only real damage being to the nail plate. The nail will appear thickened, white or yellow discolouration, brittle or crumbly.

The Cause:
Fungal toenail infections are caused by the same fungal organisms that give fungal skin conditions(AKA tinea, athlete's foot, ringworm, Hongkong Feet). They are infectious and can be acquired through contact with contaminated surfaces including nail polish brushes.

Treatment:
You have several options.
1. Do not treat it at all - as these infections only affect the nails, some people choose to leave them, especially since it is such a stubborn condition to treat.
2. Over the counter topical medications. There are a range of "paints" such as Daktarin tincture which you can apply, cost about $10. Firstly, trim away the infected nail as much as possible. When applying the tincture, make sure you file away the layer of paint from the previous application otherwise the new app will not penetrate.
Something else which you may find equally or more effective is to use teatree oil. You can diulte it in some water and soak your feet in it as well as applying it directly to the nail.
There is also a product called Loceryl which I'm not sure is available in Singapore which costs around $100, this is said to be the most effective topical treatment.
3. Removal of nail - this is quite effective but you must undergo minor surgery under local anaesthetic. You can return back to work next day with some painkillers. Bear in mind that the nail will take anywhere from 6-9 months to completely grow back.
4. Oral antifungals - these are available but not commonly prescribed as they may cause some unwanted side effects eg, stomach upset.

Ok hope this helps.

Where can i take the nail out? as i have fungal unfected nails too....how much will they usually cost for consultation and removal of the nail?

Some GPs will do it. Otherwise you can get a referral from polyclinic to go to the hospitals to see either an orthopaedic Dr (any hospital) or a podiatrist (at TTSH, CGH or SGH). Cost i'm not too sure, around $100 or less I think.

keann, I've read that soaking the infected toenail in apple cider vinegar helps.

Maybe you wanna go to a Chinese physician instead of resorting to removing the entire toenail. You could try the Eu Yan Sang clinic at Tiong Bahru Plaza.

My nail too turned yellow and it seems hollow and loose. What is the cause of it? Other than not drying it.Pus came out during the first time but the nail became loose suddenly. I've seen a doctor and he just gave me antibiotic cream to apply. Can I still wear shoes? please reply!

Hi Fion !

From your description, i can only guess you must hv accidentally hit your toe nail agst something or it could be due to tight sport shoes. Now it has loosen...the hollow is probably the cavity. The nail will eventually fall off. I am sure a new nail is growing underneath it.

Dont be alarm, it is very common.

I hit my nail agst the stairs last year, same situation like yours. It bled and had pus too. Quite sadly it took 6 months for a new nail to grow to its normal length.

Someone stepped onto my big toe during clubbing time. I ignored it, as its normal to get step sometimes in very crowded place. Normally the blue black will go away.

But that time, it didnt go away, lower half of my toe nail is black (with blood clot). I didnt notice till I removed my nail polish.

Got this anti funggal drop, and faithfully drop a few drops daily till the new nails grow out.

At one point of treatment, my toe nail peel off, very ugly sight, and cant cover them. very funny to see toe without nail.

me too had this nail fungus problem for a long time. The nail is always dry and peeling, and the outer layers always peel off layer by layer.

My fren recommended me to use olive oil on the nails, as it keep the nail from drying. One of my not so serious nail seem to be recovering, though there is still seem to be peeling. Perhaps some of you would like to try.

Hi,
I have nail fungal infection, so nail edges dropping off. Read somewhere online that we can get those treatment creams in pharmacies. I bought Mycoban brand cream at $5 in Guardian and it seems to be working well for my nails.

Last year, my nail manicurist sold an anti-fungus drop to me for $30 leh. It's only one-quarter of the Mycoban's size. So dun get conned to buying expensive treatment products by manicurists!

hi Green

sigh.. i wished i read this post earlier on.. paid $48 for a stupid lotion (yes, from a pedicurist) to get rid of my fungal-infected toenail! @$^$#...... only to find out that one can actually leave it be..

mine was due to tight shoes. toes were too cramped. then followed by the blue-black phase which i thought it'll go away. didn't expect it to turn into fungal infection. >.<

Hi,
What's the brand of the lotion that you paid for? May be you can let us know so that we can be aware of also.

I read from somewhere before that fungal infection can spread from toe to toe if it is not well taken care of or spread to other people if you share the same equipemnt.

hi laDy
the brand of the lotion's Dr.G...
from the information i gathered, seems like fungal infection takes a long time to heal because the growing nail will sort of "push" the fungi out.. hence, no point getting expensive lotions. the pharmacy ones will do the trick. aarrrrgh!

Hi amberi0
Thank you for the info...I thought Dr.G was 1 of the better product. My friend ever used it and she said was good. May be it all depends on the seriousness of the infected toes.

How's your toe now?

hi

Treatment of Fungal Toenail Infection
Topical ointments and antifungal powders may help contain a fungus infection.
The standard treatment for fungal toenail infection has been the oral drug griseofulvin. This prevents the fungus from spreading until the infected nail grows out. Another drug commonly used is ketoconazole. Treatment can, however, take many months and the drugs have side effects that can be serious.
Several new drugs have been approved. These are itraconazole (Sporanox) and fluconazole (Diflucan

treatments are:
•Oral medication – ‘Terbinafine’, ‘Fluconazole’, ‘Itraconazole’ etc. are some anti fungal medicines that are used to treat Nail Fungus. But this process is bit slow and is effective more to grow new nails in the place of lost nails. It takes about 4-5 months to grow new nails. If you are patience enough then you can opt for this treatment.

•Tropical medication – In this treatment urea soaked cream is applied to the infected nail so that the cream should penetrates deeply into the skin and cure the disease. But it is also partially effective.

•Antifungal lacquer –In this treatment antifungal lacquer’s nail polish is applied to the infected nails and after few days nail polish is washed with alcohol. ‘Ciclopirox (penlac)’ lacquer is used in this context which is very effective to heal the pain. But to heal the disease completely, I am not sure.

I have had toe nail fungal for the longest time and recently bought a product recommended by my friend called Organic Wild Mediterranean Oregano Oil. I have used it for a couple of weeks now and there is huge improvements.

I bought it over the counter but later realized that it can be bought in their online store as well. ( www.neuganics.com or search facebook for neuganics).

Hope it works well for you too.

Hi dkny, this oil that you were recommending. is it to be dripped into the toe nail... or apply on top of the nail? Do you use it when you have nail polish on too?

There are remedies which are used for treatment of nail fungus such as bleach, Listerine, and even sun rays are these days claimed to be effective that’s quite a new thing I heard about recently. There are bunch of other remedies available and proven remedy to heal toenail fungus such as apple cider vinegar, cinnamon oil, baking soda and so on.

But you are required to be patient and consistent with any of above remedy to work in the best possible way. Else if you are in hurry and looking for sudden relief then you can opt for some clinically recommended solution such as Zeta Clear that's highly famous to be complete treatment for any sort of toe nail fungus.
