Buying Diamond Ring

Went JannPaul today to view their signature cut - Super ideal cut, brellia and solasfera. After viewing, it really give me more headache. All are so bling. Which shape should i go for? Lady like traditional round or the "squarer" shape (is it call cushion cut?)
Any comment?

Just try on all and see which one makes your heart skips a beat. Haha!

Personally am more inclined to the cushion brellia as it has a more unique shape and have the same brightness and sparkle with the round ones. Heard from them it is very hard to find cushion cut with that kind of bling.

Are u the bf buying for the gf or are u the gf?

If you are the bf and dunno which to get, try getting hints from ur gf. Ask not so obvious qns like what diamond shape she like etc. Just come up with sth to make it not so obvious.

If you're the gf, which do you personally like? Everyone has different taste n preference so it all comes down to u :)

If you aren't sure about the type of shape preference, go with the generic 57 facets round brilliant cut. That's the shape most ladies associate diamonds with.

I am the bf looking for ring. Anyway, i have tested her out and she says she prefer something unique shape.

This make me more firm up on my decision to go for cushion cut.

Finally, placed my deposit with a cushion brellia at JannPaul after my second visit.

I must say my experience with them are fantastic. Their professionalism are top-notched and they really go through thoroughly on what should i know about diamonds especially for a noob like me. Most importantly they are not pushy at any one time. And i strongly recommend those looking for diamond ring to look for them.

Looking forward to the final product now and waiting for them to send me the scope images. Will post it here once i receive.

Images look good. Usually I will use the HCA calculator to filter before I choose which diamonds to send for ASET / idealscope analysis. The HCA however only applies to round diamonds.

As long as you see little light leakage (see legends in scope images) and like how the contrasts look, then I say, go for it.

WOW!! whats that? Is that a photograph of the diamond? Where do you get that from?
Pardon me, I am totally new to this. Looking for a engagement ring currently.

Yup. Thats the scope images of the diamond which i have purchased from JannPaul. Check them out as they provide free diamond education and is very useful for diamond noob like me.

Have been going to different retailers over the week. Should i get a simple ring or those with side stones? And what is the difference between platinum and white gold?

Any suggestion?

I would say choosing a ring is alot harder than diamond as every person has different preference. Maybe you would want to try to find out from her?
As for platinum and white gold, I understand that both looks the same when they are "new" and usually platinum is more costly than white gold. For me, I chose a white gold as it doesn't make a difference to me.

Your cushion diamond is very nice.. out of curiousity, does it come in other shapes?
You mean the hearts and arrows?
Yup. It comes with the traditional round shape and recently from JannPaul fb page I saw the octagon shape which also has the Hearts and arrows. My first time seeing such a unique shape for diamonds.

Share with you the video.

1 more shape to consider. More confused now.o_O

Have been going to several shops for the past few weeks to look at whats on offer from different shops and read up more on diamonds online.

Here to share the information I have gathered (Correct me if I am wrong:p):
Out of the 4Cs (Cut, Carat, Colour & Clarity), I would say cutting is the most important as the brilliance, sparkle of the diamond will be affected.
Understand from my research that a certificate for example, a GIA triple excellent, does not guarantee that the diamond is good enough (even though it has the best grading for cutting), as the cert has a "loose" grading for the cutting itself. The best way to analyse how well cut a diamond is, is by:

1. Using the Holloyway Cut Adviser (Purpose: Eliminate bad performing diamond)
2. Use an Ideal Scope (Purpose: Analyse a diamond light return and light leakage)
3. Use an ASET Scope (Purpose: Analyse the intensity of light return and light leakage)

I am still in the midst of hunting my diamond ring, will be visiting more shops and learn more before making my decision. Am also keen to customize my ring. Any recommendation where can I customized my ring?

Good job on reading up! I read up a lot also before buying the diamond, as I'm going to wear it for the rest of my life.

You could probably customise from your jeweller whom you'll be buying the diamond from.

However if they don't customise (as in they only have specific moulds for which to set your diamond on) then there are many of us here who have gone to Jaan Paul with good reviews.

My tip to you when purchasing - bargain and bargain and bargain. Look or ask around for quotes for customising, or you could even go to the regular retail jewellery shops to check how much they would charge to set a diamond and from there you can get a rough gauge on how much you can expect to pay.

That was what I have gone through in my diamond selection at jannpaul.
They explained to me the HCA and show me all the scopes to analyse the cutting.

For customization, I believe they do that too as I saw some drawings by them at some blogs but not really sure about the process as I chose from one of their selection. I am not that creative :D

When I buy that time I din see this Octagon shape. Believe it is a new launch by them.
But I agreed it looks very unique.

Josharcher, this is the Octagon Hearts and Arrows. Its a new launch by them and saw it physically yesterday when I visited them.

Its a 88 facets, 8 hearts, 8 arrows, 8 sides. Huar Ar!! :D
I compared with the Brellia and Super Ideal side by side and I must say that I am more attracted to this octagon shape. It is more scintillating than Brellia and Super Ideal. The scopes looks nice too. I have requested scope images from them and will share once I have received it.

Thanks for recommendations guys! I went to JP and looked through all the different diamonds.. We chose the Octagon diamond. Their service is very good and we learnt alot of things from them. Lionel served us. He was very friendly and not pushy. They advised me to choose some designs to bring our the octagon shape. I can't really visualize it the diamond on the ring but they said they will send me a 3D picture of my whole ring first before I confirm the design with them and still can make changes.

I got my diamond scope images. They had an explanation for each of scope. Can't remember all of it
They are all ok right?

Would like some opinion.. the holder of the diamond put on the "flat" part of the diamond or the "pointed" part of the diamond nicer??

This one seems to make the octagon shape more obvious and from afar looks more squarish?

This one from afar looks abit more roundish. I like the arrows direction where its like a compass, north-east-south-west.

The scope looks impressive.

The ideal scope is used to analyse light return and light leakage and red represent light return and so we want more red than white areas.
Aset scope is also used to analyse light return and light leakage, however, it also shows the intensity of light return. Green represent low light return and red represent intense light return, so again more red the better.

Yup. The scope looks good though I am not an expert.

Personally, I prefer the 2nd pic where the arrows are NSEW. I feel it brings out the octagon shape more.

The image looks good. Minimal light leakage and very symmetrical.

For me, i like the first image more (Flat top). Personal preference.

My ring is from Jannpaul and i've to say it's beautiful! When you put it together with other brand rings you can clearly see the difference.
& the amount of detail they put into the ring is just amazing! (:

care to share what you mean by differences exactly..? :)

cos imho, for classic bands, i don't think the quality is different from the designer or mass marketed brands. and quality of the diamonds of cos depends on the specs you've chosen..

but JannPaul's service is undeniably good - reliable recommendation, patient and no hardselling.

Hey! Sure, it might be because of the different type of diamond.. mine is a solasfera diamond. so there are more facets and that's why it'll shine brighter...

Jannpaul also allows customization of the ring so it makes yours special and not like those off the shelf kind..
