Hi deluxe. I live in Melb for almost 2 years and I still cant find a proper permanent full time job. Before moving to Melb, I was in Adelaide for 6 years. I have no complaints financially, even if you work in the most minimun waged area. I dont really feel any pinch from the high tax. In fact, after tax deduction, I still am happy with my pay. The salaries in Australia are considerably high even when you compare it with middle europe.
eg: waitressing minimum wage is about $22 an hour. In uk, you're looking at 6 pounds. And in EU about 8€. Go figure. Work wont be an issue if you are not fussy. Its everywhere.
The suburbs in Melb, in my POV are better in the South Easterly areas. Best website to look is realestate.com.au. Chris and me surf in there like every other day. We are looking for an apartment ourselves from December onwards. Our fav suburbs are Armadale, Malvern, South Yarra and Caulfield. These areas are within the 15km distance from the city and are pretty and lined with trees and have parks. Furnished places are a rare find.
If you are worried about co² gas omissions and recyling, Oz is the place to be, the population is obsessed with the environment. Especially when we are in a high drought stage now. Which is fine, coz i am used to it after 7.5 years.
Maids are non existent in Oz. But Cleaners and Babysitters are. There are many around to help clean your house anytime on freelance basis. Most people are independent in rearing their kids in Oz and theres heaps of play areas and activities for the kids all year round.
I have no issues with racism, BUT there seem to be a lot of segregation in the community sometimes. And its horrid. The other tend to not want to mix with the other. Especailly those uni students. Its quite a worry. BUT somehow when it comes to food, everyone rojaks together. there is still hope, ya?
Well, good luck.
