A Place for Singles

siao, u still young lah... at heart i mean... tell u lah, when u find your siao char bor, things will happen very fast and next minute got a kid calling u papa liao... siao papa

ai yah.. I think I'm the most poor thing around here. no assets to my name. Instead, I wake up 2 hours before my husband wakes up on weekends, so that I can do the marketing, and prep the food to be cooked for lunch and dinner.....so that I can spend quality time with him when he wakes up...

cactus, actually my laptop is on 24 hrs a day as well but i don't touch it when i need to sleep.. anyway my little gal won't allow me to touch it anyway. if i refuse to close the laptop, she will refuse to sleep.. ha ha this is really one of the joy of being a parent - that you are so important to someone's life.

sometimes, I think I'm working for the sake of seeing my pay cheque come in every month! And not to pay off any loan for the sake of finally owning it... cos I simply have nothing to my name... haha! so aimless in life.

cactus, I have max quality time.. I outsource marketing to my maid.. i just give her a bicycle and money.. she decides what to buy and cook

your girl is so cute!! Well.... I think I've not reached the stage in life when I am able to place family above work. These days, work stress gets into me and I do treat my husband quite unfairly.....

My turn! My turn!

I love to:
- Wake up to birds chirping & squirrels juz outside my place every weekend morning
- Sat go parade my dog around Botanic for people to fawn over her
- Sun go home & listen to my mum's nagging, but I get good food in return
- Weekdays catch up with longlost frens from everywhere
- Twice a year go holiday
- Pick up new hobby every now & then.
Shiok.

unfortunately for me, I dun have a maid. I dun even have a house to call my own!! But I enjoy cooking for my husband and I tend to wake up very early in the morning cos I sleep quite little (used to working long hours and sleeping little) and it's a joy to cook for my husband cos he loves my food.... just that sometimes when I'm in the kitchen for too long, and he wakes up earlier than expected, I feel a bit guilty cos it means he has to watch me in the kitchen or try to help me.

cactus,

my one very specific... down to gender and their lives... and very expensive... haha. not the generic type... mine includes weightage of life, exact year where i boom, where i will have trouble etc...

Cactus, I dun understand why you have anything to grumble about cos you and hb earn more than $10k combined, you stay with your ILs so no need to worry abt property tax and taking care of the house. You have lots of time to devote to your career and hb. Pardon me if I'm wrong, but you shld have less things to complain abt than most pple here.

sperm-brudder won't bluff u... dating at older age no need to take few years one... everybody straight forward and simple... more transparent... paternal instincts just hit me out of nowhere... i'm extremely eligible hor... can fool around wan, somemore exposure to ktv weekly which guy will wanna get married and settle down when staying single is guilt-free...

but she comes, u know she's the one... and it's time.

haha, G-gal, I'm not grumbling lah. I'm sorry you read my posts in the wrong light. I was grinning to myself as I was typing away. I'm just engaging in mindless chatter!

sperm brudder...i guess tat at older age, u wont spend time par tor too long..usually within 1yr if can, married liao n den par tor during marriage...but parental really a nightmare for me...haha

ya hor, u ktv king leh..when wanna go there again huh??..LOL

Orh.. Cactus I suppose you're one of those pple who likes to say they are more poor thing than others when actually they are not? ;) I understand... it's only human nature to complain. Hmm.. you can actually afford a pty more easily than most pple around here. It's just your own personal choice not to have one.

wah, powder. Your fortune teller quite powerful ah!! The one my husband went to was in taiwan. only he and my FIL went to consult. So far everything the fortune teller said about my husband and my FIL came true.. and it's quite specific leh. Like he gave my husband 2 job titles... and true enough, my husband ended up with one of the 2 professions. My FIL has 3 kids, fortune teller said 1 would not be with him. True enough.

But the thing about my husband having many kids... dun thnk that will come true.

just went... abit sianz, i guess human are like that... most pple can't wait to go... for me it's over and over and over again, same thing all the time... nowadays only big crowd then i go, at least got pool table can play pool... otherwise it's the same old songs, but good place to practise lah... hehe.

ah siao, the parental instinct is not so apparent one. I didn't use to like kids too. My ex-colleague also said her hb din want kids but as time passed, he slowly accepted the idea of having kids. Now they have a son and the hb turns out to be a gd dad to him.

brudder, fyi i never been any b4..cos no kakis n also too ex...i saw the exp claims my traders submitted..its crazy $$ thrown away....

G-gal, I dun know if I'm the type to say I'm more poor thing than others when I am actually not... I just know I like to type nonsense once in a while and I'm in such a mood now.. haha!

But seriously now, G-gal, we all have problems of our own. High income may not mean lotza savings.Must look at income vs expenditure, compare that with future expected earnings and future expected expenditure, then decide what standard of life we want for retirement and what is retirement age....

Life is tough. It's just whether we know it's tough or not. Many pple live life not knowing it is tough and they survive. Ignorance is bliss sometimes. I wish I was ignorant, but unfortunately, I'm soooo kiasi... and soooo pessimistic. I'm growing strands of white hair prematurely.

K la Cactus, since you put it that way. You're entitled to say what you like in this forum anyway. But seriously, I know you and your hb belong to the "highflyer" group of young professionals. Your income and lifestyle shld be higher than most pple in your age grp (higher than mine for sure and you're younger than me). So I dun understand why you seem to have more "concerns"? Yes life is tough. But for pple less educated and less privileged than you, life is much tougher. I'm just expressing my observation... no offense ya.

cactus,

i'm not really into it to believe, but it's just an activity for me... then as little things happen, u just take note how 'zhun' the fortunte teller is lor... actually few months back, got this old ktv girl who read my fortune and was freakishly accurate on the exact year i almost went bankrupt, when i started picking up, and when i would boom in the future... mostly coincided with the fortune teller... that nite i freaked out man. hehe...

bro, ask your trader bring u for exposure lor... ya it's not cheap, easily 6-7k a nite... i remember my 1st time... i saw a bill of 19k... as my boss was signing, i was thinking of the cars i could put downpayment for... really ridiculous... but the biz brought in a 1mil a year, so wat's 19k?

G-gal,

I can only agree that our lifestyle should be higher than most pple in my age group.. but I think the prob lies in that my husband and I are way too pessimistic, way too prudent.

You know, although we only have 1 savings account with the bank, we actually have a book which we keep, which details the amount of $ we allocate to different purposes. Every month, we put aside a small sum of $ to "future kid's expenses" and "spa expenses". Spa cos we go regularly and the expenses can really add up. As for the other "account", it's to pay for the pre-conception expenses. If we didn't draw up a budget for these, we prob won't go to spas at all (we don't go movies or shopping.....so would have absolutely no form of entertainment since the both of us dislike exercise!), and prob wouldn't even seriously plan for kids.

My ILs are financially very dependent on my husband. As for me, my parents are better off but I'm the only child. And I know I will ultimately have to bear the burden if they require my help. That's not to say I dread my ILs or my parents for this. Rather, I recognise it's my husband's duty and my duty to take care of them. And until we know that our kids are normal and not chronically ill (certain bad genes run in our families), we can't spend $ with ease.

I'm not making excuses for the way my husband and I think and plan our finances, but thought I would share this bit of info with you so that you may understand a little. Granted, you may not agree, but at least, I've given you an insight to our lives and I feel better this way...

bro, think u r right about it..anyway, i haven seen 6-7K or 19k one..the most is 2k plus i think..but tat to me is crazy $$ liao..n ya, the biz ring in millions of $$..wat's tat indeed.....

then not bad liao... those are the more sleezy ones mostly... but pnc hor. the top class ones less sleezy and more expensive... dun ask me logic, but i prefer it that way.

cactus,

u are right abt ignorance being bliss... sometimes the less u know, the more u can save! hehe. but then sometimes i think abt it, i'd rather be exposed than not... at least it drives me... think end of the day it's down to our individual needs. i definitely can't live on XX amounts anymore, having been exposed to YY lifestyle... whether it's progressive or good i can't say for certain. but the basic thing is... if u want YY lifestyle, u must earn YY money.

pple die badly becos they die die wanna live YY lifestyle but earn XX money... but Good for u for all your planning... i think it's very important.

i dun know how to do such planning, so i just put money in insurance accounts to cover all these needs for the family.

ok i'm finally able to come in and read all the posts on this thread. no time to go read other threads.

aiyo ppl, no need to compare lah. who was the one who started a thread on having no $$$ huh?
wink.gif

still, I just wanna tell cactus that you're really worrying too much. I remember that you already have enough money for retirement. some people can't even earn that amount in their lifetime.

simpleman, I am really very envious of your daughters and admire the relationship they have with you. Father-daughter relationship/interaction is something that I have been trying to fathom almost all of my lifetime.

ok! time to go catch up on other threads, esp that AL thread. seems like things have gotten even more complicated!

I'm the extremely inquisitive sort. will ask and ask until I find out everything. sometimes I wish I didn't ask so much, so won't know so much. hehe.

yes.. insurance is important. adequate insurance is important. must meet changing needs.

Haha! That's a very positive encouraging post from you Rara. Yah.. my husband and I are working towards our retirement but I can't say we have enough yet cos not sure about inflation and when we actually intend to stop proper work and get our lives back! But sure, I'll try to loosen up a little!

Well cactus, I guess you and your hb are quite the cautious couple ;) Not a bad thing, but then I dun really believe in planning too much. Life is too short to be spent worrying about the future. We can plan all we want, but sometimes things just dun happen the way we plan them. Maybe I'm kinda sanguine and happy go lucky in that sense. I do plan for things eg having insurance, savings, investments, endowments, etc, of coz. But I won't obsess over them.

Let me tell you a little story. My mum used to be the sort who'd compare who's got what (she likes to compare me to my elder cousin who used to be a star student), while my dad is more laid back. My mum wld tell my dad to go and invest in private pty but my dad prefers to have cash savings. One day my mum had an accident and she never fully recovered till now. My dad spent a large chunk of his savings to take care of my mum. Money which wld be more than enuf to buy a nice private pty w cash upfront. What's the moral of the story?

I feel that if my mum wasn't so obsessed over comparing, she wldn't be so stressed out and unhappy, causing her to have hypertension and early menopause. If my dad had been less prudent, we cld have a private pty or enjoy more material things like holidays as a family, and maybe my mum wld be happier and not suffer hypertension, but then we'd have less cash to treat my mum after her accident.

So.. I came to conclude that we shld just be happy w our lives now and enjoy it to the fullest w our loved one. Dun be too obsessed w comparing and dun be too careful w our spending to the extend where we cannot enjoy the fruits of our labour.

G-gal, What you shared was insightful. Actually as I was typing, and reflecting on myself, I realised what counts most is if I were to die now, would I regret anything? Would I regret not having my own home, a car, a maid, a kid, etc. Guess not. Cos I have a great husband and we don't have the burden of having a chronically ill child, for example (touch wood!). I just sent my husband a sms to share with him how I feel. That poor guy has been quite pressured lately cos he's been meeting up with his ex-schoolmates and seeing how successful some of them are, and even the less successful own so much more than us. Perhaps it's a guy's ego!

this minster pay thing me embroiled in discussion in other forums... hehe... it's been the hottest topic for awhile liao... just feel it's bad timing to do it when we just spent time justifying the gst increase and how it's gonna help the poorer sporeans... then suddenly...

siao, 2k+ is really cheap... sounds like 1 or 2 person go Only.

minister pay. I have nothing against paying the Minister millions. It is the so called top civil servant that I have an issue. On what basis do they peg their pay to the private sector?

A lot of them I know (some of them personally) - they are just civil servants - just follow the policy - nothing creative - they probably can't survive outside and they want that kind of pay?

Some of them (a handful) are OK. OK for the 2nd tier minister like minister of state for eg, I give them the benefit of the doubt. But the other so called top civil servant - don't think they are worth the money the govt is paying them.

My wife used to work for one of the mayor (I don't want to say the name). Wah lan, damn terok. abuse power. make use of govt power to pull string. Like to shout around. Nothing to do, just ask subordinate to do all the things. It is an absolute disgrace really. Fortunately he was asked to retire.

Ya... I am also doubtful abt ministers or civil servants being deserving of such high pay. Most of them can't think out of the box for peanuts. In my line of work I sometimes have to deal w govt bodies and the civil servants are just mindless drones... cannot make it in the real world type. Sad to think where are taxes go to... :P

I feel the urge to defend again. There are good ones & there are bad. It's easy to diss the govt (I used to be 1 of them) but u learn to appreciate the difficulties more when u're on the other side of the fence. In the pte sector, u're accountable only to ur boss. So long as the monie is rolling in, everyone's happy. In the govt sector, u're accountable to the ENTIRE S'pore population. Taxpayers who insist on their rights to question every decision, every purchase, every entitlement tat the govt makes. How far out of the box can u think liddat? Accountability is a big issue.

But I agree about the strings pulling. Dun deny it's prevalent. Damn irritating. I hate it!!

Disclaimer: I dun get salary revisions hor. I'm nowhere near the top. Easier to count from bottom up.

me just feel that to be able to serve spore is an honour... and to be able to serve spore AND be extremely well-renumerated... it kind of removes the honour for me.

laundry, of course there are good ones la.

Goh Keng Swee, one of the found father of singapore once said,

"If I have my way, I will line up all the civil servants and fire every third person"

Well it was said to scare the shit out of them but I guess he hit on the nail.

I really have 1st hand interaction with very senior civil servant - say up to perm sec level - some of them really too much. They thought the govt belongs to them.

I don't begrudge the Minister's pay - it is just those so called top civil servant - those that does nothing.

You said they are accountable to the public? Have you seen how they reply to the public in the forum? There was one classic case, I think one of the ex-general who was the CEO or DY CEO of SMRT a while ago.

When it was brought up a couple of years ago to build lifts for the handicap in all the MRT, he actually responded in the newspaper to say that MRT is not for the handicap - if you cannot walk huh you better take taxi or private transport. And said that it is too costly to retrofit all the MRT station.

But it took our ambassador-at-large tommy koh to write a lenghty letter to the forum to rebuke him. He kept quiet. After that, the government then announce to spend $30m to retrofit all MRT with lifts.

What sort of accountability to the public is that?

laundry, I have more incident to relate - one of them that affect me personally - about how moronic the govt top civil servant can be.

Actually I don't expect them to think out of the box - but at least have some common sense and decency to be flexible and assess each situation on its own.

laundry, so you think we don't have a right to question how the govt spend the money. Just look at some of the govt buildings. Look at the Police complex in cantonment - big slab of granite at the lobby - don't know how much it cost the tax payer.

Yup, I like Goh Keng Swee. Most of the founding fathers have their feet planted firmly on the ground.
happy.gif
Actually I hv a personal vendetta against 1 of the Minister-of-State too. Throws weight around. Grrr...

I din read tat but hahah... Takes a "higher power" to get things done. But wat has tat got to do with accountability? *blur* I'm talking abt accountability as to how govt monie is spent leh.

laundry,

i hear this part abt being 'accountable' to Spore... i just find it Hard to believe... I never knew Nor ever had any impression we were being aCcounted tO in reality. but veRbally i hear it all the time... Perhaps i'm wrong?

anyway sometimes i find alot of top management pple use those words 'accountability', but typically it comes from a template of side-stepping when time to really account. the ST Forum is a good example of accountability... there's none. merely telling pple wat happen and that 'we are always mindful of...', 'we aim to please...', etc... tks for the recommendation, tks i hear u... BUT.... blah blah blah...

and life goes on...

in realworld we get the sack, we really account, pple will resign honourably...
