hsbc not bad.. I just applied for it.. actually a telemarketer called me to try out the card. Just received my 1-for-1 vouchers for starbucks, GV and jetstar ;) This gonna be my "buy petrol" card liao.

most cards give 2-3 yrs free membership anyway.. then everytime after the free period we wanna unsubscribe they will give us free renewal.. I dunno how to convince amex that i really dun want their card and it's so hard to call in and talk to someone there.

hi powder,

did u happen to be in Gombak during your NS? How come NSF officier and crowded with regulars?

I was in Tekong. On the rosy side, we had alot of 'power' in the isolated island.

All the power struggles and scapegoats things happen in many units in SAF.

Talking abt wasting tax payers money. My commander insisted to replace all equipment and did a complete renovation (including replacement of all electrical equipments, beds, lockers etc) of the bunks and officer's mass cos Tony Tan was visiting the camp. We also built a brand new recruits mass. It was dispite my disaagreement as acting Logistics officer. In the end, we bursted our annual budget by some 20-30% over unnecessary replacements. Total wastage of resources.

Today morale very high. Returning home finally!

"Power corrupts, Absolute power corrupts absolutely".

This is obvious. In the army, there is almost absolute power. When you are in the uniform you are subjected to absolute whim and fancy of your superior officers - some of them are absolute morons. It is just that they have a couple of crabs up there. And they thought they are god. This sort of absolute power is good during war but during peace time it will breed abuse of power and all common decencies are lost.

Wasting of money is nothing. Wasting of human lives - like the commando dunking case - it is actually quite common place in the army. I saw sargeants dunking detainees; and I saw more horrible things. Better not say too much here.

If you have read "Lord of the Flies" you would understand that the darkness of the human souls are all the while there and they are released in certain circumstances. I believe being in an environment like the army releases these dark-evil forces within humans (alamak, i sounded so much like sgguy)

Also just look at all the atrocities committed by American Soldiers in iraq - they may be normal american kids not prone to extreme violence but once they wear the uniform and they have absolute power (over the pow), the dark evil forces will be released.

Milo,

it was quite common to be scrambling to impress for visits... dun we all hate visits... have to make old things look new, if got budget can just get new things instead. poor guys have to end up practising for parade and blah blah...

nope, not gombak. else sure remember u. was in a classified unit. all the worse as i had to suffer in silence. the 'bad guy' was actually sitting on the board of a prominent organisation that helps society...

simpleman,

oh i love LOTF too... one of my favourites... "Who's got the conch?" poor Piggy...

yes we sort of have the same drift. tat actually became my influence in work too... no MNCs, no big organizations, no need for 3rd party rule nor decisons to decide on my progress... just pure character and calibre... so basically more comm-based jobs.

no leh....no one mention anything...

ah siao....true lah. Boss in or not makes no diff. But then, he might call suddenly and ask who is in the offc.

Me: No one is in the offc
Boss : how come?
Me: I dunno
Boss : next time you must ask

haiz.....

hi simpleman / powder,

in a sch, 'seafood' are rare. So, those crabs are really powerful. Thankfully, they are hardly in camp in the evenings. That's when the absolute 'power' are in the hands of NSFs. But anyway, I think the army has evolved alot. Men are treated with much more respect in schools.

It is after passing out and when posted to units that we see the contrast between the NSF and the regulars. It is pride and professionalism vs wayang and idling. It is common that NSF becomes scap-goats. Another common scenario is the storemen getting charged during an internal audit. Basically, he took over a store that was in a mess to begin with. He cannot say no to the handover either. It is actually an easy scapgoat that the CSM and Quarter Master looked for.

But to charge an officer is a major thing at least in my unit. NSF officers sign lots of extras but not to the extend of getting charged. I was lucky, I managed the unit finances and petty cash. So, most PSOs gave me some face.

Hmm a discussion here on NS times?

Those who witnessed such cases of scapegoats being made of NSFs or incidents of 'absolute power' in practice are those who're given a sneak peek into the ugly, unflattering side of our glorified National Service.

I always find it thoroughly amusing to see the advertisements on tv and the huge posters at MRT stations and bus stops for our armed forces. It seeks to instill a sense of 'national pride' for those awaiting enlistment, and makes the family of our 'army men' proud of their sons/husbands/boyfriends. My gf always comment that the ads makes the armed forces seem very 'cool' and 'macho' and 'fun'. My replies are always along the lines of "If you want to invite people into Hell, you must find a way to make it look as enticing as Heaven". Only after you are inside will you discover the 'hidden treasures' entailed.

Personally I find my experience in NS a sneak preview of the ugly side of politics I'm likely to encounter in the future when I'm working. Difference between office politics and politics in a unit is that the latter is much worse, but also less publicised. With the 'absolute power' entrusted upon some absolute morons, it's no wonder the abuse is pretty widespread. (regardless of which unit you're posted to, there are bound to be similar cases) With the 'uniform' and 'crabs', it is also more likely for the wayangs to be covered up and sabotages to be hushed up.

Just my 2 cents. Anyway, think we ought to move on to another topic. We'll bore the ladies to death at this rate.

morning.... *yawn*

simpleman i aleays supported the idea of 4d and toto internet betting.. i can;t stand the long queues!!!! and i feel the best way to combat those illegals 4d and tot is to make SG pools betting more accessible

morning...

*raises both hands and both feet for internet betting*

i can never catch the opening hours of the betting booths on weekdays! and when I do on weekends, it's super long queue.

and it's true. my PC illiterate uncle and auntie learnt how to boot up the PC, log in to Windows, open IE and navigate to all the soccer pages just so they can check soccer results and plan their bets. And that is all my uncle can do on a PC.

Oh yes, I am also for the idea of online betting in Singapore. It is baffling as to how Spools are going to extremes to maximise profits (just look at their comical odds on offer for football betting) but refuse to explore the avenue of internet betting.

And like cecilia said, illegal bookies are sure to take a severe beating should Spools make their betting more accessible.

The long queues are really getting atrocious nowadays ya? Maciam queuing up for free cash handouts...

Haha... RaRa, I've also this uncle who learnt how to use the internet solely for checking football odds, results, and placing bets online.

The government's got their campaign to push for more tech-savvy citizens all wrong. Should they start classes at community centres offering '1-Day internet course: Learn how to use the computer and BET ONLINE!', computer literacy will shoot up overnight.

mach, But there are times that SG pools is the laughing stock cos they provide exceedingly good odds for certain matches. YOu have to be early though cos the odds will change dramatically.

In some matches (during world cup) - you can guarantee to make money by betting on online internet and on sg pools at the same time - taking different sides of course.

Hahaha... YES! Especially during World Cups and European Championships and such!

I didn't have the 'capital' to make a big killing though, regrettably.

And yes, there ARE times when Spools offer considerably good odds. But like you pointed out, these odds lasts for all of half an hour after opening, if you're lucky.

The local market's so tiny that any 'big bets' of 3-5k will immediate result in an 'update' of the odds, real-time too.

Milo,

in OCS u already see the young 27yrs old majors, or 30yr-old ltc... actually i really loved the disciplined life in ocs... morning 5am 5km jogs etc... u feel healthy and clean somehow. posting to unit completely changed my perspective... not so garung i guess... and more political. one of the appointments i held was actually the disciplinary officer, i appealed many cases but could not prevent sending 1 guy to DB. i guess tat incurred the wrath of my senior.

ya, it was the LRI where i was being charged. accountability dates back to a coverup tat couldn't hold anymore. anyway, sometimes i prefer not to reveal too much... cos it may paint a bad light, and me got several Regular frens... personally airforce & navy seems so much better to me. just glad i didn't sign-on cos i wouldn't have survived the politics without being involved in it myself.

cecilia,

You need capital. Return is 1 to 2% per match.

If you have 10K, you can make 100 to 200 easily.

this is playing on the different odds offered by different parties, internet online & SG pools. But you have to act fast.

Ok I give you a real life example.

During world cup, Switzerland vs Ukraine
Odss for winning, draw and lose

Odds (SG Pool) 1.8, 3.35, 3.5
Odds (bet365) 2.6, 3, 2.8

Suppose you have $10,000.

Bet $4000 on Swiss to win (on bet365)
Bet $3000 on draw (sg pools)
Bet $3000 on Ukrain win (sg pools)

If swiss win: you make $400
If draw: you make $50
If Ukraine win: you make $500

Of course you could vary the amount slightly to make the gains more even over the 3 results.

wah wah... *eyes big big* hmmm...i still dont understand leh.

eh simpleman, next time i hv spare money, you bet for me can? wahahaha

Haha... So I've noticed.

Seems like he's enjoying making a fool of himself by leaving immature comments on forums.

Haiz. Sometimes when you encounter impossible people like this, can't help but wonder what's actually going through their minds.

haha, he zhi... very funny...

the thing abt open forums is u can't eliminate pple so just bear with them or wack them.

True. When morons are not filtered and allowed to roam forum threads and pollute our poor souls with their senseless inputs, there is nothing much we can do.

powder, the thing about 'whacking' these kind of people is that there are individuals out there who thrive on such negative responses. Scary.

Mach, i refraining this time... otherwise the posts go up again. anyway the witty sarcasm may be abit wasted on him.

tat 'he zi' is a he har?
