6 Wedding Costs Your Bridesmaids Should Never Have to Pay

It’s easy to forget that bridesmaids are also guests—here’s what expenses they shouldn’t be expected to pay for.

Bridesmaids often play a deeply meaningful role in that journey. From helping with preparations to offering emotional support, they are there through many of the big and small moments leading up to the celebration. But while being a bridesmaid is an honour, it can also come with financial and time commitments that quietly add up. And while close friends and family are usually happy to do so, how much is too much to ask?

The truth is, there’s no clear rulebook when it comes to what bridesmaids should or shouldn’t pay for. Expectations can vary depending on traditions, personal preferences, and the kind of wedding you’re planning. As weddings become more detailed and personalised, being mindful of these expectations matters more than ever. Here are six wedding costs you shouldn’t expect your bridesmaids to pay for, so you can celebrate together in a way that feels thoughtful, balanced, and fair for everyone involved.

1. Bridesmaids Dresses

For years, couples have gone back and forth on whether bridesmaid dresses should be covered by the bride or the bridesmaids themselves. While there’s no universal rule, the answer often lies in how much freedom bridesmaids are given in choosing what they wear. If they’re free to wear something they already own, or to select a dress within their own budget, it’s reasonable for them to bear the cost.

However, if you require your bridesmaids to wear a specific outfit or a custom-made dress, the responsibility should fall on you. At that point, their attire becomes less of a personal choice and more of a requirement to fit the vision you have for the day.

2. Hair and Makeup

Similarly, if you’re asking your bridesmaids to have their hair and makeup done professionally to achieve a specific look, it’s only fair for you to cover the cost. At that point, it becomes less of a personal choice and more of a requirement to fit your overall vision. Otherwise, allowing your bridesmaids the flexibility to do their own hair and makeup, or to engage a service within their own budget, keeps the expectation fair and comfortable for everyone involved.

3. Bridal Accessories

While matching bridal robes, coordinated jewellery, customised shoes, and other themed accessories can make for beautiful, cohesive photos, they are ultimately optional add-ons. These items are typically chosen to complement your wedding vision rather than support your bridesmaids in their roles, so it’s thoughtful for you to cover the cost rather than pass it on to them. You can also think of them as a meaningful way to thank your bridesmaids for being part of your day.

4. Food and Drinks

Your bridesmaids (and groomsmen) are not just your wedding attendants—they are also guests at your celebration. While they play an important role in supporting you throughout the day, they are ultimately there to share in the joy of this milestone with you. With that in mind, caring for them as you would any other guest goes a long way, whether that means providing meals or taking care of key logistics. Ensuring they have food and drinks throughout the day, especially as they move alongside you through each part of the celebration, is a simple but meaningful way to show your appreciation for all that they do.

5. Accommodation

For most local weddings, accommodation isn’t typically part of the bridesmaids’ responsibilities, as staying over is not usually required. However, if you’d prefer your bridal party to stay the night before the wedding—whether for convenience, logistics, or to share in the experience—it’s thoughtful to cover the cost of their rooms. This helps ensure they’re not taking on an added expense they wouldn’t otherwise have incurred.

6. Travel (for destination weddings)

Destination weddings can be incredibly memorable, but they often come with a much greater financial and time commitment for your bridal party. Flights, accommodation, transport, and meals can add up quickly, and not everyone may be in a position to comfortably take on these costs.

If it’s within your means, consider covering some of the key expenses, such as flights or accommodation, or contributing in a way that helps ease the overall burden. Just as importantly, it’s thoughtful to recognise that saying “yes” to a destination wedding is a significant commitment, and to give your bridesmaids the space to opt out gracefully, without any pressure or guilt.

At the heart of it, your bridesmaids show up because they want to—bringing time, effort, and love to help make your wedding vision a reality. The least you can do is respect their generosity and avoid putting them in a financial bind. After all, a truly memorable wedding is one where everyone celebrates together, without anyone feeling taken for granted.
