Should grooms wear make-up for the wedding? We hear the truth from an expert

Social media searches are seeing more grooms wear make-up for their wedding. Below, a veteran make-up artist tells us why men’s beauty is here to stay.

There’s much talk about bridal beauty in the world of weddings, whether it’s the bare minimum of a radiant make-up look and flattering hairstyle for the actual day, or a solid exercise regime leading up to the event for those keen on a more drastic transformation. But groom styling is equally crucial, especially in a new era of expectations for male grooming and appearance—where taking just as much pride as one’s partner when it comes to dressing, hygiene and beauty is a green flag in modern relationships.

While daily make-up might seem like a bit of a stretch for most males, applying it on for what arguably counts as the biggest day of one’s life is no insurmountable task. Director and make-up artist of Makeup Entourage, Dollei Seah—whose work in the film “A Good Child” recently received a nomination in the Best Make-up and Costume Design category at the 62nd Golden Horse Awards—confirms that there has, indeed, been a growing demand for male grooming and make-up in the wedding industry of late. With Pinterest searches for “groom make-up” increasing by 42% just last year and a flurry of social media posts across popular platforms such as Instagram and TikTok mentioning the key phrase, it’s clear to see that make-up for grooms is more than just a fleeting wedding trend—it’s the embracing of one’s most polished and put-together self.

Modern grooms who have moved on with the times will know that masculinity and make-up can, in fact, co-exist. Through enhancing one’s natural, God-given features, make-up on the wedding day is an elevated approach to boosting one’s self-confidence, be it the taming of unruly brows with an eyebrow gel, or a subtle yet defining swipe of bronzer along the cheekbones and jawline. But the most pertinent benefit of wearing make-up as a groom? Achieving a cohesive, charming aesthetic when next to the undoubtedly stunning bride, eternally captured in photographs that will be fondly reminisced for years to come.

For those still new to this notion, Dollei gives us a brief overview of what it means when grooms wear make-up for the wedding, below.

Why should grooms wear make-up on their wedding day?

Weddings are moments captured endlessly in photos and videos. Even a slight touch of makeup—such as concealer, light foundation, or powder—can help even out the skin tone, control shine, and ensure the groom looks just as refined and camera-ready as the bride under bright lights and flash photography.

What are the most common misconceptions people have about men wearing make-up?

Many assume that wearing make-up makes a man appear less masculine—but that idea is quickly becoming outdated. More and more public figures, from actors and athletes to grooms, are proving that grooming and confidence go hand in hand. Taking care of their appearance doesn’t diminish masculinity.

What kind of make-up do you recommend for men on their wedding day?

For men, wedding day make-up focuses on enhancing natural features while subtly concealing imperfections. The aim is to look fresh, confident, and well-groomed—without appearing overly made-up.

How long does a typical male grooming or make-up session take and what does it include?

A typical male grooming or makeup session takes about 30 to 45 minutes. It usually includes skincare preparation, natural makeup application, and hairstyling.

What would you say to a groom who’s on the fence about wearing make-up on his wedding day?

I’d say—it’s not about altering your appearance, but about enhancing your confidence and presenting your best self on one of the most significant days of your life. Modern men’s make-up is designed to be refined and imperceptible, helping to even out skin tone, control shine, and maintain a fresh, composed look throughout the day and in every photograph.

What kind of skin prep should men start before the wedding, even if they don’t plan on wearing full make-up?

Just a little care and consistency in the weeks leading up to it. Cleanse, tone, moisturise and use SPF (be a fan of it!)

Any tips for men who want to look their best on camera without appearing “overly-done”?

Choose a tinted moisturizer, light foundation, or concealer just to even out redness, blemishes, or dark circles—not to mask their skin.
