Nicole Chang Min and James’s Sky-High, Tropical Floral Wedding at 1-Atico
Nicole Chang Min and James held a fun and colourful UP-themed pre-wedding shoot to symbolise their relationship rising upwards, then tied the knot in an elegant, tropical wedding in the sky at 1-Atico!
Nicole Chang Min, 30, Content Creator, and James Seah, 32, Actor, celebrated their love with a fun and colourful, yet deeply meaningful, UP-themed pre-wedding shoot on the beach, then exchanged personalised vows at their beautiful, tropical wedding in the sky at 1-Atico on 15 January 2022.
How did you first meet each other?
Nicole: We met at a friend’s birthday party where James wasn’t invited. However, midway through the night, the party was running low on food and drinks and that’s when James was called in to be our last minute delivery personnel. His friends gave him an SOS call and he happened to be chilling at home at that moment so he agreed to come.
James arrived shortly at the party armed with more food and drinks and excitedly rang the doorbell while I was preparing the surprise birthday cake for the birthday girl. Not wanting to alarm her, I quickly opened the door and was greeted with James’s loud “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”. Thinking he would ruin the surprise I retaliated with, “SHUT UP LAH!” and that’s how we first met. He has been besotted ever since then.
What made you fall in love with your partner?
Nicole: At the start, I felt that he was a very genuine, kind, and down-to-earth person. Not like the usual douchey guys I’ve encountered in my lifetime hah! His reserved and slightly shy personality got me curious about knowing him on a deeper level and once the conversation started going, everything just fell into place. We have a lot in common yet also a lot of differences which gives the relationship a nice push and pull to it. What I’m lacking in, he’ll compensate and vice versa. If, like what people say, that finding your other half is like looking for a jigsaw piece that fits, then I think we fit nicely together.
Why did you choose the movie “UP” for your pre-wedding shoot theme?
Nicole: James and I really liked the opening scene of that movie and it will always get me teary watching it. A lesson to also learn from the opening scene is to not wait till it’s too late to enjoy adventures and to make every moment count. There’s also a funny saying that marriage is the peak of a relationship and after that everything starts to go downhill, so as a gentle reminder to ourselves, the balloons symbolise going upwards and that is what we hope for in our relationship.
Did COVID-19 affect your wedding plans?
Nicole: We pushed back our wedding for more than half a year due to COVID-19 and only started planning four months prior when we saw that the situation was looking slightly better. We also decided to downsize the number of guests to fit the regulations, and the five-person seating arrangement was a nightmare!
What was your wedding theme and how did you create it?
Nicole: Our initial idea was to have a carnival-themed wedding with various interactive booths the guests can have fun with. However when COVID-19 struck, we had to rethink that whole concept. I didn’t want anything too formal or traditional but the main idea was to let everyone enjoy the night as much as we will. For the florals, we also preferred something more lush and structured and not anything too sweet or romantic. We discussed the florals and colour palette we liked and let Kayly from Bucket Full of Roses work her magic!
To replace the initial interactive aspect we wanted, we created a scent for the night and diffused it into the venue for guests to have a whiff of what our idea of love smells like. They were also able to bring home bottles of the scent as wedding favours to remember the night. In line with the slightly tropical floral theme, we also placed various fruits on the guest tables for them to nibble on throughout the night or to bring home to enjoy. I guess what caught many people’s attention was the TOTO door gift guests received when they enter the venue. James and I thought it would be fun to see if anyone became a millionaire overnight haha! It’s also a good ice breaker and I saw many people comparing TOTO numbers at their tables.
What was your wedding day like?
Nicole: We mutually chose to skip the gate crash element so luckily we didn’t have to wake up super early. For the dinner, it was really nice seeing all my friends and family gathered in one space after so long. It felt very surreal seeing everyone face-to-face, and I was very touched to spend this special day in their presence. I must say that the whole night went by so quickly that we really didn’t have enough time to savour every moment. Before I knew it, it was 10:30pm and we had to cut the alcohol because of the restrictions. OH MAAANNN.
What was the most memorable moment of your wedding?
Nicole: Definitely saying our vows to each other. James is not a sweet talker nor is he good with words so I was really looking forward to hearing his vows as we kept them a strict secret from each other while writing. It was truly a core memory moment. You can check out my vlog for snippets of our vows!
