6 Wedding Mistakes That Make Your Special Day Look Less Luxe

Money can’t always buy a classy, chic wedding. To truly exude refined taste, here are 6 wedding mistakes to absolutely avoid on the special day, no matter the budget.

In a social media-dominated world where “classy”, “timeless” and “elegant” are top keywords in all searches wedding-related, it’s clear to see what the prevalent vibe check is like for brides and grooms-to-be. Ballrooms of historic mansions, caviar-topped canapés and lush floral domes are all that Pinterest recommends for that boujee dream wedding—if only the algorithm could feed one a pay raise and a well-endowed bank account to go along with it. While dropping close to six-figures to impress guests on a one-day affair might be a cakewalk for some, others would think twice about whether such a costly charade is worth it at all.

But here’s the thing: anyone who’s heard of the phrase “Money can’t buy class” ought to know that it’s a simple and straightforward truth applicable to weddings as well. Seemingly trivial wedding mistakes show that the ability to afford booking out the most grandiose banquet hall, with extra to spare, doesn’t always guarantee a foolproof scene of sophistication. The devil is in the details—avoiding blunders such as mismatched colours or tacky lighting is all it takes to maintain an aesthetic that’s pristine and polished. Good taste and styling choices mean that couples working within a set budget can, too, achieve a chic wedding without having to break the bank.

Below, we spill the six wedding mistakes couples in their wedding planning journey should steer clear of for a refined, elevated celebration.

1. BRIDE AND GROOM IN MISMATCHED SHADES

Start the marriage in harmony, both figuratively and literally. If the tones of the groom’s dress shirt or attire doesn’t match that of the bride’s gown, the lack of cohesiveness will painstakingly show, especially in photos. It’s not a given that the gown will be pure white, and the groom failing to match in shirt that’s ivory, off-white or any appropriate shade would cost the bride’s outfit to look dingy or yellow in comparison. Colour-coordinating to avoid such discrepancies is key to looking unified and well-put-together on the big day.

2. NO SPECIFIC DRESS CODES FOR GUESTS

Let’s be real, a dress code can be interpreted by numerous guests in myriad different forms. One person’s “formal” might be another’s “cocktail”, say “wear red”, and be prepared to see attendees showing up in a multitude of varying shades, and what exactly is anyone supposed to make out of “garden party chic”? The aesthetics of even the finest decor could be easily shattered by guests’s clothing choices, so be strict and specific about the dress code. Having all the guests show up coordinated could do wonders for the wedding and instantly give the scene an upgrade, so make sure to clearly state the preferred colour tone. For example, “navy blue” instead of just “blue”, or share a mood board and palette for guests to take reference from. If necessary, offer guidance for certain patterns, textures and fabrics, so clashing extremes can be avoided.

3. TACKY LIGHTING

Lighting is everything. It impacts the decor, affects the quality of photos and videos, and sets the whole atmosphere. Avoid harsh or unflattering tones, such as lighting that’s too bright, too white, or oddly-coloured. Instead, opt for soft, warm lighting with amber, blush or candlelight tones that will feel undeniably intentional and high-end.

4. QUESTIONABLE STAFF ATTIRE

Keeping tabs on the attire of the bride, groom and guests isn’t enough. The staff uniforms are often overlooked, but play a surprisingly big role in how polished a wedding feels given that it signals and sets the tone for service quality. Take note to ensure that servers, bartenders, or coordinators aren’t dressed in different shades of black, informal shoes, excessive accessories or bright attire with large brand logos. The staff should look like a well-organised event crew instead of a sloppy, unprofessional team, so make sure to require pressed, well-fitted attire and brief staff on appearance standards before the event.

5. PLASTIC TABLEWARE OR PROPS

Plastic or disposable tableware and items, such as cups, plates or water bottles conflict with elegant elements such as fine linens, floral arrangements and candlelight, and make everything around them look unrefined by association. Not to mention, they also look dull and flimsy on camera. Pay attention to detail and invest in glassware, or cutlery and props that have weight and texture, which are sure to enhance the appearance of the wedding and add to the guest experience positively.

6. FORGETTING THE GETTING READY DETAILS

The getting ready process before the celebration begins is documented in photos and videos, and is an essential part of the big day. Everything should look chic, from the clothes that are worn by the bride while she’s getting her glam done, to the hanger that the gown rests on for the mandatory shot of the bridal outfit before it’s worn. Think: silk or satin robes in ivory, champagne or blush tones, which are slightly structured or belted with a good drape. As for the gown hanger, wooden, velvet-covered, or padded hangers will look far more polished than basic plastic or wired hangers—one of the common wedding mistakes that cheapen the overall look.
