6 Effective Ways To Deal With Conflict Among Your Bridesmaids
You’re excited that all your besties have agreed to be your bridesmaids – until signs of conflict starts to show. Learn how to deal with it here.
Your wedding is one of the most exciting and memorable moments of your life, and having your closest girl friends as part of your bridal party just makes this milestone even more special. However, even the closest of friends can experience disagreements or misunderstandings during the wedding planning process, especially when emotions run high and everyone has their own ideas and opinions. Add the fact that your bridal party may be made up of friends from different points of your life to the mix and it’s no wonder tensions may arise within your bridal party.
While conflict among your bridesmaids can be a stressful challenge and add unnecessary strain to an already busy time, knowing how to navigate these conflicts with patience and care is the key to maintaining harmony within your bridal party. To help you manage conflicts among your bridesmaids, we’ve put together six effective strategies you can employ to maintain the peace and harmony in your bridal party.
1. Acknowledge the conflict early

You might be tempted to ignore the problem in hopes that your bridesmaids will work it out eventually, but that might backfire when the conflict worsens and affects their teamwork.
Try to speak to one of your bridesmaids who is not involved in the conflict to better understand what’s going on. Then, speak privately with those involved to learn about the problem in their own words and how they are feeling for a better grasp of the situation. Do mind your tone when you have a one-on-one conversation with them; avoid sounding accusatory or judgemental. Instead, keep your tone neutral and your intent on finding out the source of the conflict between them with the goal of resolving the issue.
2. Listen with a neutral stance and offer solutions
Sometimes, conflict arises from misunderstandings that can be cleared up through open communication, so during your private conversation with the bridesmaids involved, do remain neutral and avoid taking sides. Let them speak and listen carefully to each person’s perspective, allowing them to express their concerns and feelings.
Doing so will allow you to evaluate how serious the nature of the conflict is and brainstorm for a practical solution. Whether it is adjusting responsibilities, finding compromises, or allowing everyone some time to cool off, your role is to guide the situation toward a resolution that benefits everyone involved.
3. Be the one who delegates responsibilities

Instead of leaving it up to your maid of honour to delegate responsibilities, you should be the one who assigns specific tasks to each of your bridesmaid based on their skills and interests, if that would help you avoid any conflict from arising within your group of girls.
4. Focus on resolving the conflict, not getting them to befriend each other
Most of the time, some degree of conflict is bound to arise amongst your bridesmaids, especially if they are made up of a group of girls who were strangers to one another before they banded together for your big day. Friends from different walks of your life may not find it easy to bond instantly or at all, and that’s completely okay. They don’t need to become best friends, they just need to work together peacefully to support you during this exciting and stressful time in your life.
So, instead of trying to foster a friendship among them, you should focus on resolving the specific issue at hand to tackle the root of the problem and find a solution that allows everyone to work together peacefully, even if they are not particularly close.
5. Seek intervention from outside help

Outside intervention can be particularly valuable when the conflict becomes personal or ongoing, affecting the harmony and teamwork of your bridal party. It is also particularly helpful if you want to ensure that your bridesmaids are aware that they are being treated fairly and equally.
An unbiased third party, such as a wedding planner, a trusted friend or even a family member can offer fresh perspectives and help defuse the situation without the emotional ties that might cloud your judgement or hold you back. They are also in a better position to advise and remind your bridesmaids of their purpose of being part of your bridal party, and encourage them to put their differences aside and work together to support you during your wedding planning.
6. Make changes to your bridal party
The purpose of having a bridal party made up of close girl friends is to provide you with a source of help and support during this exciting yet stressful time, but if having to mediate their conflicts and manage their interactions add on to your stress levels during this important time of your life, then you might want to consider making changes to the line-up of your bridal party as a last resort.
When you’ve decided that the only way forward is to let one or more of your bridesmaids go, have an honest talk with them about the issue at hand and how it’s making you feel when all your attempts to resolve the problem between them have failed. Gently and respectfully tell them that the situation isn’t working out and it might be best for everyone involved for them to participate in your wedding as guests instead of being part of your bridal party. However, there is a chance that your bridesmaids may not take their dismissal well, so do beware that it might cause you your friendship to make this move, however necessary it is.
