11 Ways to Prepare Physically and Mentally for Your Wedding Day

In all the busyness of planning your wedding, it’s easy to neglect your physical and mental health. Make your wellness a priority with these achievable habits, and walk down the aisle as the best version of yourself.

Your wedding day is one of the most significant and memorable days of your life, and understandably, planning for it can take up most of your time and energy. With so many tasks to check off your list, it can be too easy to neglect your personal health and well-being. You may think you don’t have the time to take care of yourself, but the stress of wedding planning can increase fatigue, moodiness, and take a toll on your mind and body, making it even harder to juggle everything on your plate.

Making your physical and mental health a priority–even when you’re so busy with wedding planning–will help you to manage your stress, improve your mood, and maintain relationship harmony with your spouse-to-be. Taking care of your mind and body doesn’t require drastic effort; small but positive lifestyle changes and new healthy habits will go a long way toward a happier and healthier you.

Start preparing physically and mentally for your wedding day, and you’ll be more present and engaged during your engagement. Tag your partner on this wellness journey, and the two of you can build a foundation for lifelong healthy practices beyond the wedding.

Physical Preparation

1. Start Early and Set Realistic Goals

If you aren’t already physically active, now is the perfect time to start moving your body. Physical exercise is essential for your physical and mental health, as it boosts your mood, increases your energy, decreases the risk of disease, reduces stress, and improves sleep.

Weddings are a great motivation if you have a physical goal to achieve. Set realistic and healthy goals, whether it’s toning, weight loss, or simply boosting your overall energy levels, and track your progress. Remember, the objective is to feel good, not just to look good.

2. Incorporate a Balanced Workout Routine

Combine cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Cardio improves heart health and burns calories, strength training helps tone muscles, and flexibility exercises like yoga can reduce stress. If a structured workout stresses you out, or if you can’t commit to a regular class at the gym, don’t worry. Find an activity you enjoy, whether alone or with your partner, so that you can work in the physical activity without the pressure. You’ll instil a lifelong habit of fitness and reap the benefits of regularly moving your body.

3. Glow Up

Now’s the time to start taking better care of your skin. To achieve that coveted bridal glow, invest more time into your beauty routines with regular masks, facials, or other beauty prep. Beyond the topical products like serums and masks, create a beauty routine from within by nourishing your body and skin with essential vitamins and nutrients.

4. Mind Your Nutrition

A balanced diet is crucial to good health. Instead of crash dieting or taking extreme measures, focus on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Cut down your sodium and sugar intake by limiting treats or finding healthier alternatives (think nuts instead of chips, or yogurt instead of ice cream!). Make sure you hydrate regularly, and not on caffeinated or sugary drinks. Proper nutrition plays a significant role in how you feel and look. You’ll feel lighter and more energetic, and your skin will start glowing too.

5. Prioritise Sleep

It may be tempting to stay up late scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest in the name of your wedding vision board, but sleep is one thing you shouldn’t compromise, especially when you’re already stressed and tired. Restful sleep is essential for your physical and mental wellness, so be diligent about going to bed on time and getting at least eight hours of sleep a night. If you find it difficult to wind down, try putting your phone away and integrating some calming bedtime rituals like taking a bath or lighting a scented candle.

Mental Preparation

6. Practise Mindfulness

With so many things on your mind–booking your vendors, paying this or that deposit, making appointments for fittings–in your head can be a stressful place to be. Worrying about the future can create unnecessary stress and anxiety. Practising mindfulness can help still those thoughts by connecting you to the present, leaving you feeling more grounded and less anxious.

7. Manage Stress

There’s no doubt about it, wedding planning can be stressful. Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or even regular walks can help maintain a sense of calm and control.

8. Try Journalling

Another way to cope with stress is daily journalling. Writing things down can help you to process your thoughts and emotions, create distance from negative thoughts, make goals and ideas more concrete, strengthen your memory, and help you feel more in control. Don’t let your journal turn into a wedding checklist; give yourself space–even five to ten minutes a day will do–to freely write whatever comes to mind, or list down things you’re grateful for to help yourself get centred.

9. Seek Support

Don’t hesitate to seek support when you need it. This could be from your partner, family, friends, or even a professional counsellor. Sharing your concerns and stresses can significantly lighten your emotional load. Set aside time for deep conversations with your partner, or fun outings with your friends. Your support circle will help you feel less like you’re carrying the wedding planning burden alone.

10. Carve Out Couple Time

You started out the year in newly engaged bliss, but romantic dates could have morphed into stressful, argument-filled meetings now that the wedding planning is in full swing. To reconnect, schedule intentional time away from the planning, where you put your emails and checklists away and focus on the two of you, without any wedding talk. Your nuptials will feel less like a chore and you’ll be reminded why you wanted to get married in the first place.

11. Ritualise Self-Care

Incorporate self-care into your routine. If you don’t allow yourself time to do what you enjoy, you’ll start feeling burnt out and resent the wedding, your partner, or everything else. Self-care can be as simple as indulging in a bath, reading a book, watching some TV (without trying accomplish a task at the same time), or any activity that relaxes you and makes you feel pampered.

Preparing for your wedding is not just about the external details but also about taking care of your inner self. By focusing on both your physical and mental health, you can ensure that you’re not only ready for the wedding day but also for the wonderful journey that follows. Remember, a healthy and happy you is the best gift you can give to yourself and your partner as you embark on this new chapter together.
