20 Funny Wedding Gatecrash Games for Grooms to Prove their Love
Looking for some wedding gatecrash games to inspire your own evil or crazy tasks for the xiong di? Get inspired by these naughty and funny wedding gatecrash games!
Wedding gatecrash games are a fun and integral part of many Chinese weddings in Singapore. These games are traditionally played when the groom and his groomsmen arrive at the bride’s home to “fetch” her for the wedding ceremony. They are designed to be challenging and amusing, and symbolise the groom’s effort to overcome obstacles to marry his bride. Groomsmen or “xiongdi” are expected to brave these tasks too, in a show of brotherhood.
The wedding gatecrash is a fun way to kickstart the wedding celebrations, and can be a great source of amusement and laughter for everyone involved, or spectating! Many couples take the games a step further with dress-up themes (such as these Spartan groomsmen or these McDonalds’ mascots), and bridesmaids let their creative and masochistic sides out with the most embarrassing gatecrash games.
These games are played in good spirits and are meant to entertain both the wedding party and the guests. They also serve as an ice-breaker and a way to start the wedding day with laughter and joy. If you’re a bridesmaid or “jiemei”, you may have been tasked to brainstorm some fun yet meaningful wedding gatecrash games. Short of ideas? Here’s a list of popular wedding gatecrash games that you can put your own spin on!
1. Dress-Up Challenge
The groomsmen might be required to dress up in humorous outfits, such as wearing women’s clothing or donning silly costumes, to demonstrate their willingness to do anything for the groom. This is often one of the first challenges, with the outfits staying on throughout rest of the gatecrash games.
2. Trivia About the Bride
The groom is asked a series of questions about the bride, testing how well he knows her, or about their relationship, to test his memory of their important milestones. Wrong answers typically result in a penalty, often involving physical tasks or consuming unpleasant mixtures. This game is also a meaningful and emotional one, as the heartwarming reminiscences remind everyone about the significance of the wedding day.
3. Balloon Pop
This game involves hiding notes or objects inside balloons. The groom and his groomsmen must pop the balloons in various creative ways (without using their hands) to retrieve the items or read the notes, which might include performing a task or answering a question.

4. Spicy, Sour, Bitter, Sweet
A classic wedding gatecrash game, “xuan tian ku la” is a meaningful and symbolic game. The groom and his groomsmen must consume foods that represent the four different tastes, symbolising the different experiences they will face together in marriage. This could involve eating extremely spicy wasabi, sour lemons, bitter gourds, and sweet chocolates or candies. For a fun spin, try playing a roulette with the tastes, or blindfold the tasters so they get a sweet or spicy surprise!
5. Sing for Entry
The groom and his entourage must sing a romantic song outside the bride’s door. The performance must be heartfelt enough to convince the bridesmaids to open the door.
6. Pass the Pocky
Using only their mouths, the groom and his groomsmen must pass a piece of Pocky or other similar confection down the line. Dropping it might result in a penalty or having to start over.
7. Hands-Free Feast
The groom and groomsmen attempt to eat items of food that are swinging from a pole, without using their hands of course!
8. Yoga Poses
The groom and his friends are required to perform challenging yoga poses to demonstrate their physical flexibility and commitment. The more embarrassing or difficult, the better. Group poses or formations where they have to balance on one another up the ante!
9. Find the Key
Keys to unlock various barriers, such as the front gate, the front door, then the bedroom door, are hidden within a bowl of cold, slimy, or sticky substances (like ice, noodles, or jelly). The groom must find the key to unlock a box or door to reach the bride.
10. Sticky Note Shake It Off
Sticky notes are placed all over the groom’s or groomsmen’s bodies, and they must shake them all off without using their hands. This game is both amusing to watch and challenging to complete.
11. Write a Song
The groom must write and perform a song for the bride on the spot. The catch? He must incorporate words or phrases given to him by the bridesmaids, which are often silly or challenging to use in a love song.
12. Diaper Changing Relay
Groomsmen participate in a relay race where they have to change the diaper of a doll or a balloon. This game is not only humorous but also tests their readiness for future fatherhood.
13. The Proposal Reenactment
The groom must reenact his marriage proposal, but with a twist. The bridesmaids might demand he do it in a funny accent, incorporate a dance, or do it while completing a physical challenge.
14. Makeup Application Blindfolded
The groom, or one of the groomsmen, is blindfolded and asked to apply makeup on another groomsman. The goal is to do the best makeup job possible without being able to see, often resulting in hilarious outcomes.
15. Waxing for Love
Strips of wax are placed on the groom’s legs, arms, or chest. He must endure the pain of waxing as a testament to his dedication to the bride. This game often leads to lots of laughter (and a bit of sympathy). This is also a possible penalty for other games!
16. Guess the Bride
Photos of multiple women’s eyes, lips, or other features are shown to the groom, and he must identify which ones belong to his bride. Incorrect guesses might lead to funny penalties.
17. Feeding Frenzy
The groom must feed his groomsmen a variety of foods while blindfolded, or vice versa. The catch is that the food items can range from delicious treats to less appetizing concoctions, making it a test of trust and taste buds.
18. Whip It
One of the ruder and more embarrassing gatecrash games, this game involves hanging an object, such as a banana, from the waists of the groom or groomsmen. They then need to perform tasks such as feeding the banana to another groomsman lying on the ground, or swinging the object successfully into a receptacle.
19. Water Balloon Toss
The groom and his groomsmen participate in a water balloon toss, where the distance between them increases with each successful catch. Failure to catch the balloon results in getting wet and a potential penalty.
20. Write a Love Poem
Given a set of random words chosen by the bridesmaids, the groom must compose and recite a love poem for his bride. The challenge is to make it romantic, despite the potentially nonsensical or humorous word choices.
While not every couple chooses to hold a gatecrash at their wedding, gatecrash games add an element of excitement and camaraderie to the wedding day. They create funny and unforgettable moments for the couple, and the close friends and family members in the wedding party, and provide a lot of entertainment for wedding guests. Gatecrash games are definitely a fun way to celebrate a wedding!
