Patricia and Martijn’s Island Luxe Wedding in Khayangan Estate, Bali

Patricia and Martijn’s island luxe Khayangan Estate wedding was a three-day celebration that highlighted their love and paid homage to their cultural roots, and was filled with fun games and beautiful design details by the bride herself.

Patricia, a social entrepreneur and founder of White Jacket, and Martijn, a seasoned business leader, first crossed paths in Singapore in May 2016. Their love story is both a harmonious blend of fun as well as cultural adaptation where they overcame challenges together. Having postponed their nuptials three times due to the pandemic, the couple finally celebrated their union in the ultimate three-day-long wedding affair in Bali on 4-6 August 2022, where Martijn had proposed to Patricia in 2018. With “wedding warm-up” games and a blend of cultures culminating in the wedding theme “Stroopigao”, their island luxe Khayangan Estate wedding was an epic party that concluded with a dance in the rain.

What do you love most about your partner?

Martijn: What I love most about Patricia is hard to pinpoint because there are many things! Besides that she obviously is the most beautiful woman in world, there are two traits I like most about her: her entrepreneurial spirit and her kindness to others. Both at work and in private, she always pushes the boundaries of the possible—trying new things, exploring new places, and translating these experiences in her next designs and projects. She does not take no for an answer and demands top performance from herself and the people around her, but she loves them with all her heart and goes out of her way to make sure they feel loved and valued as well.

Patricia: To me, Martijn has the biggest heart in the world. He is always smiling and most importantly, he makes others smile too. He can make friends with anyone. For example, he will always offer drinks and snacks to the workers at the petrol station every time we are there to top up fuel or get a car wash. The workers are always smiling from ear to ear when they see us. They also ask about him when I am there alone. His ability to not only connect with people from all walks of life but also touch their hearts is very admirable. As I have said during our wedding vows, he has inspired me to be a better person.

What was the theme of your wedding?

We named our wedding theme “stroopigao”. It’s derived from Patricia’s love for “kopi gao” and Martijn’s favourite “stroopwafel” to symbolise the blending of our culture and heritage. These delicacies were combined to become the signature drink for the wedding reception.

Patricia: In the spirit of celebrating different cultures and our mutual passions, the wedding celebrations and festivities evolve around bringing people we love together with an undertone of loving the environment and sustainability. The interior designer in me found creative expression in the wedding’s many touch points—from decor and set up to wedding favours and cards—and I was thrilled to see family and friends enjoy the island luxe wedding we put together.

We had so little time for the preparation—less than two months! I custom-designed the décor, signs, and gifts for the wedding. Each guest received a curated tote bag featuring our dog, Snoop, and included a welcome card with Bali elements – both of which I personally drew – handmade ceramic cups from Gaya, instant Kopi and a Stroopwafel packed together, and a quirky “But Did You Die?” recovery kit to help nurse their hangovers. I really enjoyed the process (although it was stressful due to the time crunch).

What was the wedding like?

Our three-day wedding was packed with several memorable yet intimate activities planned for our guests. The festivities kicked off with a sun down party and welcome sunset drinks at Skool at The Lawn.

At the Batu Mejan Suite at Como Canggu, a gatecrash was planned to have Martijn and his bros work for the bride so Patricia could eventually become Mrs Douven. The song and dance that ensued was so captivating the girls sent the bride on her way and forgot the ransom (read: angpow)! As a nod to tradition, a tea ceremony took place after the gatecrash so the parents could hand the bride over to Martijn.

The following day, we planned a whole morning of lively wedding warm up games including Squid Game’s “Red Light, Green Light,” and Tug-of-War. Finally, our wedding ceremony and reception took place at Khayangan Estate in Uluwatu, Bali, in the late afternoon on 6 August. Khayangan unveils the best views of the whole island, given its cliffside location overlooking the Indian Ocean.

What was the most memorable moment of your wedding in Bali?

Martijn: For the wedding I find it hard to pick a single moment. It was such a great set up—kudos to Patricia obviously because she was the architect of most of it—and we had such a great time. I think what I liked most was the rain. After the dinner, when the dance floor just opened, it started raining. But no one seemed to be held back and everyone was dancing in the rain. It was a magical moment. Surrounded by many people, rain trickling down on us, and the two of us were dancing by ourselves like no one was watching us.

Patricia: I truly enjoyed every moment of the wedding. The most memorable moment for me is the same as Martijn’s—dancing in the rain with all of our loved ones. The photographer expertly captured the magical moment of us dancing together in the rain like no one was watching. We are so glad that we made the decision to keep the party outdoors although we were advised to move everyone indoors! All of our guests told us that they had the best party and we finally went to bed at almost 5am.
