Amanda and Stephen’s Elegant Chinoiserie Wedding at The St. Regis Singapore

Amanda and Stephen celebrated their nuptials with an elegant celebration at the prestigious The St. Regis Singapore where they partied into the night with their family and friends.

Amanda first met Stephen while they were students at Notre Dame University Fremantle in Western Australia. It was Stephen’s loud answer to a lecturer’s question during class one day that caught Amanda’s attention. The school and project group mates were drawn to each other when they discovered that they shared similar interests, values and beliefs, especially their interest in superhero movies. After a beautiful proposal at Stephen’s home in Australia, the young couple chose to host their wedding at The St. Regis Singapore where their family and friends came together to celebrate their becoming one.

What is it about your partner that you love the most?

Stephen: What I love the most about Amanda is that she is a very genuine person and cares a lot for others before herself.

Amanda: Stephen is the most level-headed person I have ever met and he’s so very patient – qualities that I lack and appreciate from my other half.

What was the proposal like?

Amanda: It all happened at Stephen’s farming estate in Pemberton, Australia after our holiday back from Singapore and South Korea. It was like any other day and we were having our morning coffee. When we finished, I took our empty mugs to the sink as I always do, but Stephen disappeared to make a phone call in the office. Little did I know it was a call to my father to ask for my hand in marriage. Stephen came back a few minutes later but with a paper bag and a funny smile on his face so I asked what was in the bag then he pulled out a tiffany blue bag and before I could process it, he was down on one knee.

Tell us about your wedding. How did you go about planning it?

Amanda: We didn’t have a clue about wedding planning so we decided to engage a wedding planner in Singapore. The first challenge we faced was our venue, we wanted venue that would cater for more than 350 guests and most venues in Singapore don’t cater for more than 300 guests. As my father is in the food and beverage industry, it is also important that we pick a place with good food. Eventually, we decided to wed at The St. Regis Singapore because we’ve heard from many sources that the food and venue is wonderful. My parents have also been to many weddings at The St. Regis Singapore, and have boasted about the good food there.

Our food tasting was a little unusual – as Stephen’s parents were unable to attend, my parents invited a few of their friends from the F&B industry to join us for the food tasting and to assist us on the menu.

Stephen: It was a challenge looking for a church for our church wedding in Singapore as well, since neither of us attends church in Singapore. Thankfully, my mother did some research and rang up a few churches in Singapore before we finally found the one to wed in.

Amanda: My mother-in-law picked the Church of St. Teresa, so when Stephen and I were in Singapore for a week, we attended the Sunday service. I remember the bell started to ring at the start of service, and as I looked over at Stephen, tears began to roll down his cheeks from the sound of the bell. We knew then that it was where we wanted to get married.

As for our wedding theme, we chose the Chinoiserie theme to represent both our cultures.

Take us back to your wedding day.

Amanda: I was feeling nervous at first because I never liked to be the center of attention. However, on that day, I didn’t feel nervous walking down the aisle towards the altar. I just remembered feeling so much love on our wedding day, and it was simply magical.

Stephen: It was weird because I wasn’t feeling nervous at all for the gate-crash. However, at the church, while waiting for Amanda to enter through the door, I started feeling nervous and started packing back and forth at the altar. But the moment Amanda walked through the door with her father by her side, my nervousness disappeared and all I felt was joy.

Did your family and friends enjoy themselves at the wedding?

Stephen: We received nothing but positive feedback from our families and friends about our wedding. My family who hail from Australia had their first Chinese wedding experience. They enjoyed being a part of our tea ceremony. Most are amazed by the number of people who attended the reception because in Western weddings, it’s not common to have more than 100 guests in attendance.

What was the most memorable moment of your wedding day?

Stephen: It had to be when the church doors opened and Amanda, the woman of my dreams, walked down the aisle towards me. I started feeling so much joy that I could not stop the tears from rolling down my face.

Amanda: Towards the end of the night, after our table-to-table photo session with our guests, Bon Jovi’s Livin’ On A Prayer was playing and I remember the boys just huddling up together on one side of the dance floor and the girls did the same, and we were dancing (jumping mostly) and singing our hearts out to the song.

What is one lesson you’ve learned from your wedding planning that you’d like to share with other couples?

The biggest lesson about the planning is that you need to take it day by day and break planning into small pieces. You should not overwhelm yourself by doing too much. If in doubt, your friends and family are always there for support if needed.
