Designer Feature: Liz Martinez Fall/Winter 2015
The Liz Martinez Fall/Winter 2015 collection is full of graphic lines, minimalist silhouettes, luscious lace textures and sexy necklines. With her fresh aesthetic and spirited vision, the young designer creates wedding gowns that are modern, feminine, and glamourous.
We were pretty excited for the Liz Martineztrunk show during New York Bridal Market, when we could finally see the designer’s fluid wedding gowns with their sensuous detailing up close. Held in a cosy room at the OUT Hotel, the Liz Martinez Fall/Winter 2015 presentation featured a stunning collection of sexy, lace-adorned wedding gowns in delicious shades of cream and blush. The gowns had intricate floral applique and delicate lace and netting crafted to show slivers of bare skin. Corded lace is thoughtfully placed to emphasise curves and flatter a woman’s figure, and different tones of lace are layered for depth of colour. With the luscious textures of the florals and lace, the gowns only needed a light touch of sparkle, added with dewdrop pearls and tiny sequins.
Balancing the intricate details are sleek, fluid silhouettes in unconventional cuts. Long, chic skirts with thigh-high slits add a clean elegance to detailed bodices. Bell sleeves make a comeback, tops receive a relaxed, almost t-shirt-like fit, and new textures are added with the use of netted fabric. Lace delicately trails off the shoulder into long, graceful sleeves. A plunging slit neckline is paired with a high collar and an adorably flirty tea-length skirt. Separates are chic and modern, with striped piping adding contrasting lines to a boxy jacket top, worn with a long, minimal skirt. Fluttering sleeves in airy tulle, clean, flowing skirts, and graphic lines combine to make gowns that are seductive, feminine, and elegant. I especially loved the fresh treatment of the tops, in the boxy shape of the netted gown, the luxe sports look of the stripe-edged jacket, and the ethereal flutter sleeves that taper to a lovely V-back.
The beautiful collection is definitely affirming Liz Martinez as a haute couture designer to watch. The 25-year-old French Israeli designer already has six collections under her belt, and her spirited vision and use of unexpected materials and creative designs bring a fresh perspective to the bridal fashion scene. When we asked what inspired her Spring 2016 Bridal collection, Martinez shared her desire to create wedding gowns that reflect a bride’s inner beauty. She hopes to craft gowns that allow a bride to be quintessentially herself on her wedding day, with just a light touch of glamour. Inspired by the women on the streets of her home base in Israel, Martinez takes in the current trends but transcends them, to create gowns that are fresh and unconventional. The mix of sleek silhouettes and luxurious textures works to express a woman’s soft yet strong nature. With her youthful spirit and new perspectives, Martinez has created a collection of bridal looks that balance sharp, clean lines with seductively feminine details, looks that make a bride feel beautiful.
