WASHING MACHINE-which brand is good?

Manage to find this current thread.

I'm trying to get a new washing machine for my mum. She's got kneecap problem, so a topload machine would be best. However, having experimented with Jap topload and my own frontload model, i'm totally bought over to get continental washers, so considering a topload continental that is sufficient to wash for a 3 person household, and can have handwash function.

Budget around $1k and preferably lower than that as far as possible. Hopefully energy and water saving.

Quite out of touch with the washer market at the moment, and hope to get one before GSS over in the event of any good bargains. Any advice is very much appreciated, thanks!! =D
 


u can get better pricing from GAB but only 1yr warrantly.

i get my Thomson TX928N from HN as i want 5yrs warrantly. i pay the same price as GAB with topup to 5yrs warrantly.
 
Thomson will be more reputable for continental top loading...electrolux models not so consistent. Might worry the after sales service in future.

Hi ladies, I've got a question.
Unlike top loading machines, front loading machines do not come with soak function. As such, do you leave your clothes to wash in front loading machines directly or soak it prior to wash?
 
for soak,

its not offered by many machines actually. only miele has the soak feature.

But most continental washers have a pre wash feature. can use that
 
Sorry for cutting in, but does anyone have any feedback on Bosch WAE 18160SG?

We don't really require most of the functions that are present in 20260 or 24460 - & 18160 model seems to have pretty much the functions that we'll probably need...

bosch wae18160sg has very small drum. Althought it state 7kg but looks small compare other brands. Samsung wf8700 made in korea anytime better than tis model.
 
Any comments as to whether Brandt or Electrolux is better?

Looking for a frontloader, ~$1k budget, can wash bedsheets etc..Any recommendation is appreciated!

Need some advice on Maytag. Saw Maytag having promotion at taka best. Interested in Maytag 8018 8kg drum size 69L at only $1499 but not sure of the reliability.

Maytag is an US brand and they are not specialise in european front loading.furthermore after sales service are not realiable in local.S$1499 is a bit high...try to hunt brandt,bosch or electrolux...they are more trusted

After researching in the forum, i shortlisted 3
1) Electrolux 1495
2) Bosch was32791
3) Brandt wkf 1248

Any recommendation in terms of reliability? There are only be 2 of us and bedsheet/duvet cover is king size, will 8kg an overkill?

HMmm ideal would be 8kg washer.

As for drum size, the bigger the better so in this case if you look logically you can take out brandt cos the drum is smaller than the other 2.

But then the 1248 if i am not wrong has the programme called duvet which the other 2 might not have if i remember correctly . So its a choice lah.

Actually its okay. though the 1495 is ageing. Near to its product shelf life.

Well because the 1495 has been in the market for a while, which means that there could be an updated model to replace that. WEll spare parts. Most of the manufacturers will only guarantee that their parts will contineu to be available for a period of 4-5 years after the discontinuation from the factory line.

Miele on the other hand will continue to guarantee availability of parts no less than 10 years after its discontinuation of the model.

oh yeah the 1495 is on offer again 999today's straits times. think its harvey norman. can consider.. cheers

I'm a Turbo washer cum dryer user for many years. Current one is a 8 kg wash/ 5 kg dry. Have used this current one for more than a year. Still very quiet & no problem with it.

I know a lot of forumers don't advocate washer cum dryers but I find the dryer very useful in a few occassions espeically when my son came back from his CCA late in the evening and telling me he needs to wear the same uniform the NEXT MORNING at 7am!!!
 
Hi hi..... Just to let who ever wants a good and cheap deal on washer and dryer.
We got a almost BN Thomson Washer and Dryer to let go as we sold our house recently.
We got it last Nov 2008 at SGD$2k, still have the receipts and the warranty. Not looking to sell it at high price, but pls....reasonable offers.
We r not bringing it along as we r moving back to parents' place.

I've heard from friends that WMs breakdown easily, so i'm wary of getting a good one... Will better brands recommended here outlast those lesser known brands? If i've really to get one that is cheaper (provided i can convince my other half otherwise), what are the things/info I need to know/ask the salesman?
 
yup better brands tend to have better quality controls and materials used. so yeah.

A fine example Miele washer.. its the rolls royce of washing machine. you can ask around and they will vouch for miele.

Miele, forever better.
 
Bosch. My mother has had one for the last 10 years. No breakdown. She uses it about 3-4x a week.

I have a Bosch as well. Daily use. 1 and 1/2 yrs already, so far so good. Oh, and these are both front loaders, spin super dry!

It costs about 1k+
 
I support Bosch( the cheapest one) although quite weird that we need to manually turn the knob back to off after washing.. However, my clothes is not damaged at all(which is the most important)

Hi, So sorry for reply you late. been a little busy these few days prepping things for the new year and away for a while too. Here goes.

These are just my own two cents worth. It may differ from individuals yeah.

Bosch WAE1816SG
New model
Pros:
1) Full metal drum (including omega beaters) and drum is much smoother than others
2) 7kg drum
3) German technology
4) superquick 15 min wash
5) rinse / spin mode if you just want it to rinse and then do a final spin.
6) Door catch is metal
7) speed perfect and eco perfect options (go green hahah)
8) fascia is updated and clean and simple as with germans

Cons
1) Limited specialty wash programme. It only has dlicate, cotton, silk, wool, mix, easy care and superquick
2) limited temperature control but can live with it
3) option for pre wash also limited to one programme
4) final spin max is 900 rpm
5) the holes in the drum are considerably large actually

Brandt WFK1018A
Pros
1) door catch is also metal if im not wrong
2) it has opti a 45 quick wash with a general load which is slightly soiled achieving a class still 3) duvet
4) flash 15
5) spin speed 1000rpm (i would think that 1000 would be at the minimum u should get)
6) delayed start option
7) the holes in the drums is smaller than bosch

cons
1) pre wash option also available in most programme. only 1 or so
2) temperature control also somewhat limited but i can live with it.
3)the omega beater is plastic and is definitely very rough on clothes

Electrolux 1073

Pros
1) new design nice
2) many wash feature - cottons, cotton eco, synthetic, delicates, easy iron, jeans, silk, wool, blankets, delicate plus
3) pre wash across options
4) temperature across options
5) delay timer
6) electronic display
7) metal catch
8) spin speed 1000rpm

cons
1) drum with plastic omega beater - not smooth
2) drum holes are as big as bosch
3) omega beater is pretty small to achieve good wash (in my opinion but they could compensate it with the agitation action)

if you were to ask me. i would go for bosch but a different model with the higher spin speed.
followed by electrolux and then brandt.

bosch drum will stand out the best. and especially given this new model the door is metal catch i guess its giving electrolux a tough fight given that electrolux drum overall build is pretty disappointing.

RRP for Bosch is 1069
Brandt is 1299
electrolux 1269

so i guess based on RRP you can find the higher spin speed bosch machine for about the same price as elextrolux and brandt.

oh brandt is rated 8kg washer but the size of the drum seems to be about hte same as bosch 7kg and electrolux 7kg.

Ridz: Thank you so much for replying. I'm so glad to see your reply as it is very informative! And most importantly, we share the exact same thoughts of choosing Bosch but should look at higher spin speed! =)

I was already looking at Bosch WAE20360 before your reply. Initially, I was keen in 18161 cos it is cheap. But after considering, I think 20360 seems to be a better machine cos it is 1000rpm with delay selection & Reload function.

Any advice on Bosch WAE20360?

A big no no on WAE 18161 OR WAE 20360 OR EVEN 24360.....

Why??

The washing time for a simple full 7kg load is at 2hrs and 40mins.

It is not an improvement as compared with the previous bosch models.

Imagine a wash at 2hrs plus as compared to a 1 hr wash.

The wear and tear effect will definitely be there. Life span not enhanced.

Price pegging is far too much to pay if you compared it to the Brandt machine.

The plastic beater is definitely a plus point as compared to a metal beater(no gripping)

Water effiency is at well over at 60 plus litres if you were to read the specs of the intstruction menu..

Finally a normal drum as compared to a titled drum machine.....

Actually, I do not mind the washing time as long as the clothes come out clean & most imptly save energy & water.

If the issue for you is to save energy and water, then it sound a bit contradicting.

To save energy and water using wae 18161 or wae 24360 when the washing time to wash a full 7kg load at 2hrs plus is not energy efficient at all. Any normal washing machine can do that in slightly under 2hrs. The water usage which is a norm nowadays are mostly at 60litres at most.

By saving energy would means cutting short on the washing time. By saving water would mean saving $$$ in the long time.

When you perform a wash at 2hrs 30mins and to compare a wash at 52 mins using 50 over litres and 60 over litres, the Brandt machine would definitely be better in terms of performance rating.

Not forgetting that you would be doing a wash every now and then for the next few yrs..... Can imagine how much you can save over a period of time right??

The comparison between the4 ewf 1073 and wae 18161 is too close to call wherelse its a mismatch to place the wfk 1018 from brandt to the likes of wae18161 and ewf 1073.

The only close similarities they have are the spin speed otherwise to me, its a forgone conclusion on which machine is a outright winner.

Hi twt, I am abit lost cos ridz mentioned that plastic beater may be rough on clothes but you mentioned that plastic is a plus point.

Actually, I didn't quite get your points & which machine would you think will stand out among the 3 choices, that's why I asked again which would you choose if given the 3 choice...

I thought the amount of water used & electricity used is the same even if the machine takes a longer time to wash. Am I right to say that cos it seems like that's not the case after reading your explanation.

I know that Brandt has a shorter washing time but 1018 spin efficiency is C therefore I kind of not favour it cos if I am paying about the same amount of money, I would prefer to get a better quality one.

Finally, are you trying to tell me that all 3 machines are not very good? Cos I dun quite get your last reply. So sorry cos I really no experience in WM & for now, I'm not the 1 doing the laundry most of the time. Hee; p

But I will have to do laundry at least once a week in future... I am not sure which is good/ bad, which are the must have features nowadays & etc. even after reading this forum. I am still a bit blur... =(

Plastic beater act as a supporting cast whilst washing clothes.

We cant simply have same opinions of all issues but we can have commanding agreement on certain issues pertaining to washer.

My point to note would be that if the plastic beater is not gd, why on earth would a MAJOR BRAND like BOSCH be equipped with a plastic beater for their GERMAN made machines and then have a stainless stell beater for their THAILAND made machine... The message to send out from BOSCH is clear pay more and get better quality. Pay less and you get.,......

Efficency for spinning is a C for BRANDT wfk 1018a is because their machines only spin up to 1000. 1200 would be a B rating wherelse 1400 would amount to an A rating.

As for water used, a machine from BRANDT consumes 59 litres of water and take 50 over minutes to complete a cycle for 8kg. A bosch machine take around 2hrs and 36 mins and it consumes around 70 litres of water. So which is better?

Anyway the longer your machine works, the more prone to failure it becomes. This is a fact on most cases. Your machine would definitely not fare as well when it is around 3yrs old as compared to a 1 yr old machine based on the same amount of usage....

Hope i clarify your doubts. I am in favour of the WFK 1018A.

Any clarifications??
