Hi...

I grew up thinking I want a big white wedding, Finally when I come to my early 30s, My husband and I are currently looking at wedding venues. And ofcoz the whole parents and in- laws thingy and realised a wedding not just simply involes 2 people but it seems have many hidden "must do"

well me and my husband really want a small wedding , a beach or garden wedding and only invite people that matters.. but the chinese tradition means you cannot leave anybody out ... a small wedding to me means less then 10 tables. Simple becoz I just dread smiling and doing the "yum Seng" stuff to people I dnt know .

To be honest I at times just wana blow it on really nice wedding pictures have a really great Honeymoon a really luxurious one and thats it..rather then a number of couples who blow their budget and then go to nearby places to have their honeymoon...

Deep down I just also afraid that in this my frame of mine of not having a wedding will lead to a day where I might envy and regret.Could you guys just sound out the devil and angel in my head.

What do you guys think??

Hi Peppercorn:

My wedding is in Sept. Lucky for me, I am not from a very traditional family. My fhb is Australian. So both sides do not have too much burden. Hence we are free to make choices and decisions. Yet we are following some of the chinese traditions.

What I think is if you can give in some demands of your parents and his parents as a show of your respect, I think the rest can be worked out.

Don't feel the burden of smiling. On that day, you will naturally smile because that is your happiest day. And you don't have to do the "yum seng" if you don't want to. Whether it is a big or small wedding, you can modify your AD event to suit your liking.

For me, we will have about 10 tables. My AD will not have "yum seng" or cake cutting. We will buy some party poppers for the guests to help create a more relaxed party atmosphere. Also planning to show video of family and friends giving their well wishes.

We are still in planning stage, keeping our minds focus on how we want our AD to be.

Good luck !!!

Hi peppercorn / angela > My AD is in June..I'll be having a simple wedding of oni 9 tables w/o yum seng.

Traditions like tea ceremony i wld tink is the most impt, form of shwoing respect to our elders. Other than that, i prefer sometin simple relaxed kinda atmosphere and not rush here n there. Hence we are doign away wif gate crashing.. just hubby coming over to fetch me n head straight to hotel for tea ceremony n luncheon..

then 2 days later we'll fly off to switzerland n paris for HM.. Initially there were quite alot of arguments wif family abt how the weddign should go n follow traditions etc.. it's all abt having a good talk wif parents n making them understand y u couple prefer sometin simple, hassle free n yet memorable event..

so try to convince ur family...tell them go the 'modern' route
