Resign with a Short Notice

Hi all,

I hope someone can advise me if we need to get company approval if we need to give a short notice?

In my appointment letter, it stated that a one month notice or salary-in-lieu of short notice.

I had tendered resignation with a 2-weeks notice and I am willing to pay the balance salary-in-lieu back. However, my boss told me that this is subjected to their approval.

Hope I can get some advise here. Thanks!

yes, its subjected to ur mgmt's approval cos diff companies have diff policies.

if they are not willing to let u go early, perhaps u can tell ur new employer to wait 2 weeks more for u?

why?

Normally if you are able to complete all your outstanding tasks.. or to hand-over all your outstanding tasks, companies won't keep you any longer than necessary.

If there is any reason why they are not releasing you, find out and then try to solve it.

usually the notice period is for ur employer to find someone to replace u. unless they can transfer another employee over for the time being, otherwise quite difficult.

Since you are giving 2weeks notice and paying the balance then your boss MUST accept it, they cannot ask for 1month back.

Yes, stated black and white in SOP also. That if I want to leave early, I must pay salary-in-lieu of short notice. It NEVER say is subjected to management approval.
Anyway, I will call up MOM to confirm on these.
Thanks for all your advise!

hi there,

its very simple really. There are 2 ways to do this. Good guy VS mean guy.

You decide the last day of your work and get the cheque ready. End of business day then go straight to HR or boss and bid goodbye. Of cos, some ppl will turn nasty cos no face mah. In any circumstances, you shd stay professional bout it.

And if you really want to be a good guy..hmm...then i suggest that you just serve your full notice.

Hi,

If it is not too difficult for you, I would suggest to serve the full notice as it is only 2 more weeks. Even though you are leaving, Singapore is a such small country, you won't know who you may meet/work for in future. Better to settle this amicably.

Good Luck. =)
