i married on 2006. coming dec will be my 3rd year of marriage. But for the past 3 yrs I went into depression, anxiety, and on the verge of sucide. Everything started after the end of my wedding. To my horror I discovered that my hubby is a alcholic and after marriage he gets druck frequently, verbally abused me (luckily no physical attack ) and he controlled me as through I am a piece of his belonging, prevently me from visiting my parents, gets angry if I speak to friend on the phone and worst of all don't allow me to sleep before midnite.I got to get up for work by 6am , I run into exhausion after a month

Almost every nite I went sleepless. Day time I am like a zombie. I talked to a lawyer and was told that I can't divorce before 3 yrs of marriage, I think that this law should be changed. I have no choice but to wait for the time to come.
I planned to file a divorce on our 3rd "anniversary". But I have so many questions to answer. Pls help if you know the answers.I feel so sad and helpless

1)How long does it takes for the divorce to be final?

2)I am not a owner or joint owner of the HDB I am currently living wth my husband. That is the flat got his name only. After I divorce, can i buy a new flat? or can only get a resale?

3)when can I get a flat? after divorce or while the divorce is being process?

2)how long does it takes to get a flat?

3)while waiting for the divorce to complete, where can I get help to rent a flat?

thank you for spending time to read my message

I am sorry to hear that you have been putting up with an unreasonable person for the past three years. Although you are not allowed to divorce your husband before the marriage crosses three years, there is no stopping you from a physical separation.

Here are my quick thoughts:

1. Depending on whether it is a contested or uncontested divorce. If it is an uncontested divorce, it would take approximately three months to get your interim divorce cert. You will receive your final divorce cert three months thereafter. Contested divorce can drag for many more months.

2. You can buy a new flat together with another eligible person who is a family member. As a single, you can only buy a resale flat.

3. You can only buy a flat after your divorce is finalised.

4. Much depends on whether you are getting a new flat or resale flat. The wait is usually shorter for resale flat unless you are very selective.

5. You may not qualify for renting a flat from the government. Make your private arrangement.
