Grand Shanghai Restaurant

Yo babes, my wedding is just over on the 16th of May. And I have only good words to say about Grand Shanghai. The feedback from my relatives and friends are all great! We were so nervous that the food wasn't good cos we completely lost our appetite during dinner and food tasted blah to us. But our parents and relatives and friends feedback on the food was really great. Took us by surprise. We chose abalone soup over sharkfin soup and thought some relatives may not be happy. No grumbling at all and there are alot of feedback from friends that they absolutely LOVED the soup.
I am doing up a post on my blog soon on my review of the restaurant on the actual day once I get my wedding pix. Stay tuned!
Those who has any questions with regards to the place, just drop a note here. I will try my best to answer from my experience.

Hi nirvana, congrats and really glad to hear that everything went well at grand shanghai. kinda worried that the food portion may not be enough. Also, did u opt for the self service option for the food or was it portioned out by the restaurant already? Heard from somewhere that the food was already turning cold when it was served and the way they portioned out the food wasn't very presentable. Is it true? Hope to get some feedback from u cos am worried how my wedding dinner would turn out. Btw, was the band good???

Hi Hyperangel, yeah.. when I was at the wedding dinner, not only the food did not taste nice.. I thought the presentation was not great cos we went for individual serving and the food looks abit sad on the big white plate..
But surprisingly, our relatives say it is good that it is served individually so they get to eat good portion of the dish. The problem with eating from communal dish is that some ppl end up not able to eat much.. it is either that or our relatives are really kind .. and generous with their praises.. hehe..
The BAND! oh yes.. the music.. it is really the thing that makes or breaks the ambiance. The guests LOVE the band.. and the music.. the old chinese songs.. totally relax the atmosphere.. one of our uncle even prompt everyone to clap after the songs cos he was so impressed with the singer.. so DOUBLE thumbs up on that!

Hi nirvana, congrats to you with a sucessful wedding dinner. =)

I am considering Grand Shanghai as one of my venue for nxt yr. Can I check with you if some of your guests comment that they cant see or being blocked by pillars? Because my friend attended a wedding there, told me pple sitting at the back cant see a thing and she finds it very cramp and seating very messy, many pillars also but ambience is very nice.

Amanda: I did not go for any food tasting cos the package did not give FOC food tasting instead give 50% discount or something. We ate there before as regular patron so we were confident of the food quality. I think during the wedding dinner all wedding couples lose their appetite cos my photographer said the food tasted bland and horrible during his wedding too! Hee..

Disneyland: Yes there are two HUGE pillars on the side of the restaurant so two tables for sure will get block. But I put my friends and colleagues there so they are pretty fine with it. There are some LCDs TV that display the stage for the obscured tables but frankly I dun find it very effective la. My view is that most guests spent more time chatting among themselves and they only need to see the stage when the couple is making their speech or popping the champagne. For that, some of them may stand around to get a good view but that is quite temporary. In fact for the march in, the ppl from the VIP room (for those who are familiar with GS knows they have some "rooms" right opposite the stage) all came out and stood outside of the VIP to welcome the couple. makes the ambiance more 热闹..
On top of that I kept my tables to 21. If you max out (I think can put up to 26 tables) the tables behind do feel like abit cut off (esp on the side near the toilet) from the action.. Best to go down and check out the premise yourself to see if you are comfortable.

Picture from here

The one from Grand shanghai got abit of banana in it so it is a mixture of egg white, red bean and banana taste. Very refreshing. This dessert is not common since few restaurants in Singapore offer this. Rave feedback from guests.

Hi Starling.. did not do any changes to the flowers.. quite standard red flowers.. the lighting is pretty orangey in Grand shanghai so I am not too sure changing the flowers will make much of a difference. Plus I don't know much about flowers.. so. quite bochup on this part.. :p

Nirvana: I have view the setting on sat, i would say the setting is nice and the whole plc look grand and classic. we are interested in that plc now. =)

Can i check with you what are the songs the live band played when u have your 1st and 2nd march in?

hi disneyland, Shirley was strongly promoting using the live band for the march in, saying the ambiance is so much better with live music. Much as I believe her, We don't like using 甜蜜蜜 as the first march and our 2nd march in was a little performance involving the brothers and sisters so we need to use our own songs. She suggested slower and more romantic Chinese songs for first march in vs dancey cheerful spicy songs liked 説ä¸å‡ºçš„å¿«æ´»/cha cham bo.

For first dish, the standard is 夜上海 song which I love cos it really sets the tone for the night. Lovely performance by the first singer. She sang alot of old old chinese songs which I never heard before but my relatives enjoyed so much. I like songs in 葛兰 era so I enjoyed the songs too.

FYI. The first singer will sing a certain number of songs and then leave the stage. Change to recorded music. Then after 2nd march in, the second singer will come in. Again, sing a certain number of songs, leave and change to recorded music. So live music is not through the night for those interested to know.

Yes you are right. Shirley also said it's very nice when we have a singer singing for our march in..but i cant imagine marching in with 甜蜜蜜? like the walking and the song dont coordinate well like that. Was thinking of using english song instead but scared like salah theme like that. Thn maybe 2nd march in thn use their live band.

For the recorded music also chinese songs?

Yup, recorded music also chinese songs..

We used Cest si Bon for the first march in. It is jazzy and light at the same time. Thought fit in to the theme of the restaurant.

I think 2nd march in to cha cham bo is very cute! We used recorded music of 我è¦ä½ çš„æ„›.. also suitable for 2nd march in if you like to go for something more cheeky.

Hey ppl,

I juz had family dinner one saturday at Grand Shanghai and i loved that place. I love the band, love them deco, love the everything except the pillars.

I was wondering if anyone here able to email me their wedding dinner package. One table can fit how many ppl? I din really count.

Also, i was a private room near the toilets. I was wondering if that private room is actually a dressing room for wedding couple. If it is, i was wondering if there's a shower room inside as well.

hi everyone, i had the food tasting on last sat. the food did not disappoint us. Shirley (the manager) is very professional and experienced. I feel very safe. As our ROM will start pretty early, when I requested for some snacks to be served, Shirley immediately recommended us with the possibility to provide refreshments and food for the guests.

Mel Ng> the changing room is actually the VIP room at the corner which they also use it as the ROM room. So there is no table in that room to be set up for the dinner. The entire place can accommodate abt 260 pax (excluding those 4 seats tables at the side).
They can allow 11 pax per table for some tables but not all.

Please note that the cost for each table has increased to min of $738++.

thanks nirvana! was still thinking if i shd engage T Dragon to do the printing. Btw, how much is each piece of inserts? Does it come with the string to tie with the card?

nirvana07

Hmm.. They have different pricing leh... U can choose if u want matt or shiny wordings.. Add icon or pictures.. Get them to tie the strings for u.. Etc.. I chose the most basic gold matt wordings 200pcs at $120, no addition of icons cartoon or photos and one roll of string at $5 and opted to diy tying the strings ourselves.
They are really experienced. Overwhelmed by the number of options there. They have format for every hotels and restaurants in Singapore! So the process was very fast. We kind of knew we want to keep it no frill so it was pretty easy for us. But the aunties are nice la. Not impatient even if u take time to choose.

yup... that was what i thought too.. but on top of that, I was using grand shanghai wedding card and I wanted to retain the retro feel of it.. Thought the matt wordings and simple format would fit in more.. however cute they are, the precious moment icons would look really out of place.. hehe..
