Anyone planning their weddings from overseas?

snippy, maddcow *waves, waves*!!!

hope everyone's doing okay... i've been mad busy planning the myriad trips i have lined up for the holiday season, hehe going to toronto for thanksgiving and then edward's coming to visit for the christmas hols, and then i'm going to hong kong in feb... phew! too many things going on in my life, haha.

roses - agree with maddcow and snippy, the couple's first dance is really up to you. but be prepared to go up there and shimmy your stuff in the spotlight... people routinely get all frozen up about it and the first dance seems to be a source of major stress in most american brides i've known. some even take dancing lessons just so they don't look like chicken-n-duck in front of their guests... so think about it thoroughly before deciding! i think it's a lovely idea for the right occasion, but like snippy says, most s'poreans will not want to dance. so, unless you have a very sporting set of parents, parents-in-laws, maid of honor, etc...
happy.gif

if you do decide on it, live music would be the best to accompany... perfect excuse to hire a jazz band or a string quartet! i've seen weddings before where the couple danced to piped music, but somehow the "flavor" is not the same...

Thanks ladies!
Can always count on you gals for good suggestions.

Dewberry, I will enquire about having live music. Hope it's not too expensive.

Hmm... I think I will do the dance after the cake-cutting and thank you speech.

Snippy... petit fours sounds like a good idea. If only I could bake that many beforehand. I really want to do my own wedding favors. Just cos it's more meaningful, and it'll be nice to pick up a hobby. I've been reading so many craft books and recipes. My fiance says I'm turning into Martha Stewart
happy.gif

haha roses - you're in good company, we have a few Marthas in this forum (ie. one in wisconsin and one in boston...) petit fours are meant to be kept for a while, so you should be able to do it beforehand! don't worry about the live music if it ends up being too expensive - an idea to jazz up the dance with recorded music is to pick a song that's meaningful to you and FH, and somehow convey it to your guests. refer to it in your printed stationery (if you are doing menu cards, programme booklets, etc for the event) or perhaps you can even have the emcee do a quick intro to it during the first strains as the music starts and you take your places...?

dewy *waves!* psst - next post of yours will be no. 200!!!!

roses - i have contacts for live music (leave me your email if you are interested) - one is an agency Compass Music (I think) which is referred to me by SSO, and a couple of string quartets. Expect to fork out over $1200-1500 for reception music and around $600-$650 for an hour of chamber music. Acoustics is also an important consideration and you may need to pay extra for equipment/sound engineering. I would have chosen a solo cellist who can play Bach's Cello Suites but given that I'm here, I simply don't have the time for "auditions" when i get back - that's an idea never to be fulfilled.

Recorded music to dance to can be a good thing - because you would have memorized the rhythm and beats during your practice and also that may be YOUR song the way you remember it.

ooo - snippy good one - petit fours, though they are kind of tough to glaze to get that smooth finish - I'm very bad at glazing, i just pop my baked goods into my mouth when they are done
lame.gif
.

hiyee maddcow! haha, i didn't even notice the post number! eh, next post of Snippy's will be 3-6-9 (heard of the "secret society", wink wink? whoooooooa....) snippy, speak up, we're despoiling your character to bits, kekeke....

hmm, petit fours don't have to be all glazed, here's an unconventional tip - you can cut brownies or blondies into the same stiff squares, and then top with a swirl of piped frosting or chocolate ganache... save the hassle of glazing the whole darn thing! just make sure to use little doilies or wrap in cellophane - whatever you can do to anchor it so they don't shift around in the box.

Hi hi ladies,
I've been busy! read the post, no time to post! Good news! My FH received a letter yesterday and my visa is approved! But now I have to check with the embassy to do the next step. Hopefully shouldn't be a problem!
happy.gif

what 3-6-9??? that worked ...i'm here to defend my honour!! *shakes fist*
crazy.gif

ok lah gotta run to a meeting so gotta make this quick. erh..actually can't u just dip the whole cake in melted chocolate and let it sit? u know the same way chocolate covered strawberries are made? possible? hah but i honestly know nuts about baking. sorry
sad.gif
hehe

roses> only if you have the annoying fringe she has! haha haha otherwise no lah not martha ... yet

liz congrats!!!! yay!!!!

liz - congrats!! woohoo! where is FH now, by the way? i forget if your visa is meant for UK or other country...?

snippy - haha, gotcha! eh you're right, martha does have an annoying fringe, she looks like she's stuck in the 80's or something with that hairdo. (gulp, who am i to talk, i'm no better myself, miss tomboy...) but hey, what about the way she talks too, eh? she sounds like perpetually got some gauze stuck in the back of her mouth or something... it's quite uppercrust, i know, but still sounds farny....
biggrin.gif

liz
congrats! one major obstacle down and soon you will be "reunited - and it feels so good..."

i'm sitting here doing something i'm not sure whether it's pleasure or torture - since I can't move all my Instyle mags (btw, I'm finally leaving freeze-city) - i'm tearing out articles that are 'timeless'(to me) - like halloween cocktail party ideas (gee, I thot I was going to host a halloween party this year - NOT), how to choose business luggage (yes, very important for a jet-setter like me), solve your figure problems (yes, another reason to find faults with myself), and pictures of bags and shoes that i can only dream of...man, i just can't bear to throw them away
rofl.gif

Hi gals!

Snippy,
Nope! I don't have that fringe
happy.gif
Actually trying to grow my hair out now for the wedding and it's flopping all over the place. Haha! Oooh... great idea about dipping in chocolate! I was reading www.allrecipes.com [Good website btw] and wow, glazing doesn't look that straightforward. The good news is that I can freeze pre-baked cookies and brownies and thaw it out later. Keeps for about 3 months. And if you double wrap it, the moisture will be retained. I'm considering that....

Dewberry,
Hi hi! Great tip. I'm trying to avoid glazing. Oh... prelim checking around... wedding cake is gonna cost $65 per kg. They recommend 100g per guest. One option the bakery suggested is to do a very nicely decorated wedding cake for display, but maybe only 1 of the 3 tiers is real... for the VIP table. Then guests will be served sheet cakes.

Oh, but girls, you know what. My fiance is ribbing me that he has to get his litigator friend on standyby to defend us in case guests fall ill after eating my creations. Huump! Of course, he will be my guinea pig with all this baking... heehee

Maddcow,
My email address is [email protected] Thanks in advance! Hey, I had that problem with magazine too. I do tear out articles that are esp good. Always want to get around to making a scrapbook, but never found the time.

Liz
Congrats! Hope everything else goes smoothly for you
happy.gif

Thanks Ladies! Still have to check whether I have the correct medical Travel Insurance or else I'm stuck in Netherlands during the period of the next stage. Can't travel out! Ai yo! So must get it straight before I get my visa from Embassy. So many stages!

maddcow
yup, trying dresses was really fun! haven’t got pics from ashlee yet tho (*hint hint*…..) heh…haven’t really thought about what flavours for the cake. I lurve chocolate, and also lemon/passionfruit/sth citrusy. thinking of having a different flavour for each tier, and the top tier to be fruitcake so I can keep in freezer for anniversary!
happy.gif
real cakes are so expensive tho, so I might have to make to with sheetcakes to feed all 400 guests. but that’s kinda like cheating right?
sad.gif
have you decided on your cake yet? how’s your WG coming along? i am also have the exact same problem with my magazines here... i've been packing for the past week and realised that in the time i've been in London, i've collected a ton of magazines (InStyle PLUS bridal mags PLUS martha stewart and a variety of other literature). So loathe to throw them out.... so I'm packing them all home. hee...

roses
mm… fresh flowers are gorgeous…
happy.gif
have you decided on BS yet?

liz
congrats!! that’s great news
happy.gif

*hellos to everyone else*

e
when are you heading back to Sgp? I'm almost done with packing and feeling a little nostalgic. I'm thinking of the Charlotte - ladyfingers with strawberries and raspberries, vanilla/cointreau/grand marnier mousse - luckily FH and I have the same taste in cakes. Oh but it's more economical to have sheet cakes, Singaporeans don't really eat cake I think - I'm underestimating the number of people partaking the cake - and given my guest list, I'm serving it buffet style - whoever wants it will have to go get it (and I'll be there for sure!). I'll be having strawberries with whipped cream and chocolate cream on the side. I was originally thinking of serving a surprise Italian/french dessert buffet for FH but knowing that everyone will perhaps be too full and in a rush to go home plus the fact that Raffles charges an arm and a leg for almost every imaginable whim of mine - I'm thinking of doing a platter of Italian biscuits, and creme brulee plus Godiva chocs to surprise FH in our suite instead.

dress - it's almost done, I need to move and so FMIL will have to finish the rest of the dress - sewing the pesky buttons down the back of the dress and weaving satin ribbon sash through the lace. She's excited and vowed to beautify me - you know when you need help, moms will move lakes and mountains to make you feel better. so wonderful!

hi gals!! my experience. contrary to what most aunties and uncles might say initially.
rofl.gif
the cake we served at our wedding was the most popular dish. chocolate mousse with a crunchy hazelnut layer. even my MIL loved it. unfortunately there wasn't a way to display that as a wedding cake for us bleh.

hey and it is true that most guests rush home! but there're always the stragglers who stay back and hang out
happy.gif
(yay)... to reward them (haha) we served coffee, tea and the remaining alcohol ..oh and the left over suckling pig (i had 2 servings while mingling and after I changed out of my gown...greedy bride)

maddcow..your FMIL is so schweeet!!! and the cake sounds delish.

roses> since they can be frozen, u could coat the brownies in white chocolate and decorate them like petit 4s. do it do it!

e> I tossed out all my magazines everytime I move *sniffs*
sad.gif
i've learnt not to get attached. 7 times and counting hehe. but one day ..when we have our own place

Snippy, thanks for sharing on the cake 'reception', i never knew...oh, but i do remember to-die-for desserts and delectable garnishes at the Greenhouse - I've no doubt your cake was yummylicious.

e - you do have to take what I said as a grain of salt since FH and I are not really cake people, we are very chocolatey, fruity and (haha) tarty though! Actually a huge heart-shaped italian strawberry tart (a la Ilene Rosenzweig's wedding) would serve us very well too!

Sorry for spamming this thread - I'm done with packing and ready for that 14/15 hour drive ... somehow while my muscles are aching with all that heave-ho,my mind is still active - can't do much but type and yak.

Hi gals,

*Yawn* *Eyes tired* Was surfing the forum to see what the average cost of the wedding is. I'm trying hard to keep total net costs under S$10,000. I'm not sure if that's realistic. Is it?

Hi e!
I think I'm going to go with Margaret Brides. I'll only order a dress. Probably won't choose a package. How's the search for your dress? What type of gowns do you look good in? I'm giving myself some time to hit the gym before taking measurements. It's not just vanity. I actually need to get fit and be healthy. Thought the wedding was a good time for me to be motivated and work towards a SUSTAINABLE weight. I'm against dieting just for the sake of getting into a dress. Just thought I'd clarify...
happy.gif

I spent a lot of time at the craft section at Borders today. There's a fantastic selection. I've learnt how to make a no-sew ring pillow from a lacy tea towel, ribbons and some polyesther filling. I think I'll do that.

Snippy
No kidding, but my fiance has got me spooked by saying what if guests gets a upset tummy from the cakes I make, I'll be so apologetic and it'll be a terrible thing etc. He's got a point. I'm still considering this.

Good night... think I'll sleep now.

roses
ahh, i just remembered i was supposed to send you the contacts aeons ago. i'm newly situated, let me get organized and i'll send you those contacts asap.

as for the budget - I'm not sure what net costs mean, and it really depends on firstly the number of guests, if you are thinking of getting a fairly good AD photographer, the rates start at around $1000 and that will be 10% of your budget plus live music, that's another 12% plus, a cake you were talking about, that makes up around 4-7% for something like 100 guests...so, the ballpark for these is 30% and you still have your dress and banquet to consider. Mine runs around US$15000 inclusive of honeymoon and air ticket to Singapore and I have around 100 guests. But I'm a firm believer that with a little creativity you can get far. Oh, let me know what crafts you are looking at and if I thought of something I've come across in MS Weddings, I'll send them to you
happy.gif

hi ladies, mia for awhile dont know why s'pore brides didnt send me alerts that there's new post.

liz, how all ur preparation? didnt catch up w you on msn. is ur big day this wkeend? have ur fh arrive in s'pore? did clare tell u i just start my job

Congrats Lilo! No wonder I don't see u online these days! Glad you found a job! My engagement is on 26 Nov. Still have a few things to tie up. Finalising the guest list and more...

Have to go! I'm going to the embassy to settle my visa, takes another 8 more days as I'm going for the combined visa to allow me to travel out of Netherlands!

Ladies! Till later!
happy.gif

Lilo
Hi! Don't think we've chatted before. Yes, thanks, the wedding preparation is fun. I'm learning quite a few new things on fashion, craft, flowers, food, budgeting etc.

If you have ideas about making 1) Seating cards 2) Pomanders 3) Pew decorations 4) Church decorations 5) Corsages... send them to me please? Thanks in advance! I'm focusing mainly on flowers at the moment. Trying to see if there are substantial savings if I do it myself.

I've delegated the honeymoon planning to my fiance. Where are you going?

Hee hee! My FH's flight got cancelled but he got on another earlier flight. Now I'm waiting to hear from him about the second fight when he lands in Heathrow. Hope everything goes as planned! Running out of patience if the plane is cancelled again! Praying n crossing my fingers!

Hello Everyone!

I am back in Turin, and reading slowly all the posts I have missed. Wow - it looks active from maddcow's dress dilemma and everyone's satorial suggestions to dewy's wedding cake covering guide (I am more a buttercream than fondant person becos I'm just a lil' piggy..)

but just on the latest best wishes and Aunty advice:

Elizabeth - congrats on the visa, and don't worry about your FH's flight (i am sure he is just as anxious to see you) and keep us posted about your beautiful engagement on 26 Nov!

Roses - Small tip about my own DIY experience: Eventually our seating cards and dinner table menus were printed out on my FIL's printer (he has a nice one) on thick paper. The menus were inserted into IKEA picture frames (small wooden ones about 2 euros each) and later the picture frames were recycled to contain photos of the wedding helpers on that day, and given to them as part of their thank you presents (economical or what??)

Big shouts out to Dewy, Maddcow, Snippy, Ashlee, Lilo and E.

welcome back, i missed you. well, my dress is no longer in flip-flop land, it has been made and is sitting in a trash bag as we speak - gee, that reminds me, i have to go get a cotton sheet to wrap it up instead of letting it sit in a huge ziploc

roses - oh, yeah there are tons of ideas for all that you are looking for - do you have an inkling of what your style is - romantic, traditional/classic, vintagey, seasonal or simply bohemian? and if you have a rough idea on your color scheme. I think I can find directions on pomanders, and corsages (thanks to Snippy).

We are going to Paris (free lodging) and Italy for our honeymoon. The details, we'll get there, but we are going the countryside and off-the-beaten path route. Right now, we are planning our playlist and it's the funniest and the kookiest aspect of the wedding planning! I tear up when I listened to Wagner's Lohengrin and we both found this CD I have of the Muppet show - and were acting silly singing the Kermit's and Fozzie's duet of Movin' Right Along (I am Fozzie - hehe). Oh yea, Rainbow Connection is on the playlist
wink.gif

hi ladies ! *happy friday* been mad busy this week. don't even have time to use the bathroom. sigh.

roses> if you're using fresh flowers, i'd recommend limiting diy to a couple items since it gets really stressful at the last minute! i had a 101 things to do the last couple days b4 the wedding. or perhaps it was because i procrastinated too much ! lol

ribbit welcome back
happy.gif
must feel good to be home. btw your photo frame idea is functional and perfect! hehe

maddcow> hubs made a flash animation for me one year with the muppets rainbow connection hee
happy.gif

*waves* hellooo Lilo , Liz

*hollers* e? dewy?

Hello Maddcow and Snippy

Nice to see you are both into Muppets as well. We had Rainbow connection playing at our wedding in France, but it was kinda lost on most of our French guests (*rolls eyeballs*)

Maddcow - if you want free lodging in Italy, you know where to come. But errr. maybe not on the honeymoon, cos you wanna be all luuurved up and all (heh).. If you want a good deal, go to the Italian website on Last minute.com and try figure stuff out using the pictures and the online translators. I found that it is cheaper than using lastminute in UK becos you save on the Euro-pound conversion! Just to give you some ideas:

hello girls...

sorry for the radio silence! been in the midst of moving back to SG. and now i'm home!!
happy.gif

arrived on last Sunday, and spent 2 days running errands, etc. before going to Phuket for a few days with FH. It was a very restful time for the both of us. Did nothing but ate and slept... heh... feel so piggy... ;)

we still haven't confirmed anything except for the venue and date. visited 2 bridal studios on monday tho - WEdding Present and Silhouette. tried some dresses, and designers at both places sketched out their idea of my dress. will viist more BS before deciding.

i think i need to confirm my AD photographer soon... apparently they all get booked up real fast. love kuang's work but quite pricey. it's over S$2K and that doesn't even include teh photo album! *gasp* think gotta look around some more.

maddcow
great to hear your dress is almost ready! do you have pics? can i take a look, if you dun mind? FH and I are chocolate pple too! actually.. hmm... we are anykinda desserts pple.. hee... totally greedy.. ;p

roses
tried on several dresses and i still like the sleek look, rather than the ballgown type. and FH went with me on mon & tue to the BS. he likes the mermaid cut - thinks it's more me. i like it too, not too fussy, but am told by designers and friends that i might want to consider a bigger/more dramatic silhouette for purposes of march-in in church and also the banquet room is a bit large. thinking maybe of having a fitted gown all the way to say around hip bones then flared out like mermaid from there (as opposed to the usual mermaid which flares out from around the knees). kinda like a compromise between big dramatic skirt and nice sleek mermaid.... also definitely agree wif you on the dieting point. exercise is better. but so difficult! need lotsa discipline. have resolved to start next week. wish me luck!

liz
am excited for you!! hope you and FH are now reunited?!?!!??
happy.gif

lilo
congrats!!! that's wonderful news. how are things going so far? fill us in! hmm.. pics of gowns.... sorry, have none at the mo... in ashlee's hp... hyuk...

snippy
hurros!!! am here! but difft time zone from you now lah... really day/night man..

dewy, ashlee, ribbit
*big wave*

e
sure, unfortunately i don't seem to have your email on my 'speedmail' so you'd have to post it here
happy.gif
I read with intriguing interest on your dress search - you consider so many aspects of your dress that never occurred to me, the fact that your FH was so into it was something refreshing too, mine just tells me he hates poufy dresses (fine with me, i can't stand crinoline, every time i tried on one with it, i 'kicked' my way to the 'pedestal'), and I never had that "this is it" feeling, i was single-minded about one design but agonized over the dress budget. I'm sure you'll look really pretty in whatever you choose, thoughts + effort = gorgeous!

snippy and ribbit - so cute! we have the same quriks and what you reflected was what i was hoping my guests would feel, something they would resonate with - a lot of them are flower children!

ribbit
oooo, thanks for your largesse, we'll probably take up your offer- (and I'm not joking
biggrin.gif
), we'll map out our plans and if Turin is on the way to wherever our adventure takes us, we will be delighted to see you!

Thanks ladies, my FH is finally here! Busy non stop doing the wedding rings which are going to b eused for engagement n wedding an dother stuff! ha ha ha... will write again when I'm free! WAVES!

Hi everyone!

Flowers has been the focus of my life lately. Went to church to see the set-up for a wedding yesterday. The good news is that the church florist does a decent job for $400. The quantity of flowers is generous by commercial standards. The bad news is that it doesn't have a "wow" effect. The chair-back is just gold ribbon on white seat cloth with no flowers, and there are no pew decorations. I think I need to come up with something.

Was just recommending this to Liz the other day:
http://www.nancyliuchin.com/

Take a look! It's really gorgeous. I want to be like her. She set up this business after her own wedding.

Maddcow
My wedding style is classic. Very clean lines on the dress. Colour scheme for flowers will be pink toned.

Snippy
You're right! I'm leaving the bridal bouquet to the professionals. But I thought maybe I could do the boutonnieres and the car decor myself... though my fiance is thinking of borrowing his friend's prosche, in which case, we may have a "just married" sign instead of flowers. Don't want to do much before the wedding, too stressful, plus don't want to chip my nails
happy.gif

Ribbit
Thanks for the tip! I'm going to our wedding invitation cards at home too. I'm considering going to Italy for our honeymoon. Maybe at a later stage, could I tap your brain for ideas on where to stay and where to go?

e
Hi! Keep me posted on the dress search okay? I'm still in Singapore but may go and visit my fiance in HK soon. I know of a bride that had a white bustier dress made and a tie-on skirt made of layers of lighter material like tulle and lace. The skirt was tied to the dress at the waist with a nice ribbon. Gave the illusion of a fuller sihoulette for the march-in. And later at the reception, she just took off the skirt and the bustier dress was chic on its own. Not to mention she had many occasions to wear the dress after the wedding. Or what you could do is have a more elaborate train. Just some ideas for you to explore...

It's true, kuang is a little pricey, but I would think justifiably so. Think I would feel very reassured with him as the photographer.
Do consider... you can get a photo album on your own, or ask him to price it in. Just some advice, stay away from photo packages where you have to top up for additional photos. Get the photographers to give you back all the nagatives and digital images.

Yes, please remind me too about the diet. I have started going to the gym. And having early dinner.

Where's dewy?

went to Margaret Brides today. tried this mermaid silk satin gown with lace train. really liked it and FH had a "this is it" moment and is now quite sure he doesn't want me in a ballgown, princessy look. also went to Dang (which was pretty good too) and some random BS-es in Tg Pagar area (big mistake). at Dang, found a ballgown-like dress that i actually liked (for once!!) I thot Margaret was really nice and easy to talk to. Felt that she was frank with her comments, which i appreciated. Didn't really like designers who try to agree too much with me. Dang had lovely cheongsams. the lace and silk felt very luxurious. still looking around... keeping options open...

snippy
think i saw your dress at Dang!! but they had added some lace applique to the bust and hemline just above your satin hem... hee...

Hello Ladies!

I am so totally blown away by the nancy liu chin designs - that is such a fantastic site Roses! I gasped audibly when I looked at the images. My husband thinks I am just wedding addicted now. But hey, how can I tear myself away from this thread which keeps me relentlessly entertained?

Roses and Maddcow -
If you wanna come to quiet turin, i would be more than happy to show you the shroud and play walking tourguide (the only thing i cannot do is drive). Am still trying to obtain an italian driving licence - drivers of the world BEWARE...

How did you guess it? Apart from wedding related stuff, I also lurrve discussing holiday plans. Please feel free to talk to me about holidays (esp in Italy) AND if you want to use my humble Ikea futon sofabed in the living room, you only need to holler. The only thing which stresses me out is my perfectionist need to show you every single little museum, statue and chocolate shop here...

The culprit is the "flower child" in me speaking (hehehe) - make lurve not war and give freely ...

kao_welcome.gif

hihi ladies! been super busy this week so didn't come by here... wah, so much activity. sounds like you've all had progress on dress/flowers/ideas, etc...

roses, the nancyliuchin designs are soooo nice! and she's right in SF too, the US has such nice wedding stuff, now why doesn't singapore have such quality? we need some progress, man.

ribbit - eeeee! me too, me too, i'm coming to italy... prolly in May next year. we're planning a nice long holiday/overdue honeymoon(4-5 weeks, maybe? depends on how long our wallets can take it, haha), but we plan to spend most of our time in italy. will email you for destination ideas when the time comes... haha, right now we're still arguing over where to visit. i wanna go EVERYWHERE in short little 2-3 day stays, but hubs only wants to relax and have longer time to relax and explore each place. so many choices just in the major cities alone, we're not gonna be able to do it all in one trip.

snippy, maddcow, e, lilo, liz - *wave wave* not much time to post tonight, frightfully sleepy. will come back another time... hope this coming week isn't as hellish as last week was! i barely had time to breathe...

hi girls!

update on my preps...

visited Kai Bridal today - they specialise in lotsa floaty chiffon/tulle/organza gowns, very light, airy and fairy/dreamlike. not quite my style. but saw a pic of a particular mermaid gown which i liked v much. unfortunately,it was loaned out for a photoshoot so i cldn't try it. will prob make another trip down soon to try - and hopefully will get to meet Kai hiimself too. today only attended to by assistant who didn't really know much. e.g. she didn't know what alencon lace was...(?!?!?)
sad.gif

also met up with a few photographers today. Loved Benny Ang! but he quite expensive. so i'm trying to look at my budget to see if i can afford him. will be visiting kuang tmrw. can't wait.
happy.gif

roses
wow... nancy liu chin's flowers are gorgeous. my fav is Mint & Choc followed by Ivory Classic.
happy.gif
both are quite close to what i have in mind for my theme: Conrad's provided flower colours for the banquet are fresh green and ivory - don't want too make to many changes/top up too much.. no budget!! will you be getting cheongsam tailored in HK? heard quite good right?

dewy
hellos! hope week has been ok for you? me starting work on wednesday. sigh...

It's official. I'm addicted to floral designers webpages. Here's some other links for you girls. I'm seriously thinking of being a florist.

http://www.byreconly.com/sf_vendors/flowers_sf.htm
http://www.mybayareawedding.com/categories/flowers

Dewy
Are you in SF? SF looks gorgeous and the florists there have access to such beautiful flowers, almost all year round. Hope you have a better work week ahead.

Ribbit
Thanks in advance! Please, show me EVERY chocolate shop. Haha!

e
I visited Kai before too. Like you I wasn't impressed with the designs or the assistant. Kai was there, but was attending to someone else. I think I read on the Kai bridal thread that Kai tends to attend to walk-ins only after they sign on. But I read that some time ago. So do call and ask specifically to meet him the next time you there.

About flowers... I don't see why the hotel should charge you if 1) the changes you require are between flowers that are in season 2) the floral designs that you want do not require the use of extra flowers. No harm asking right?

My fiance knows where the tailor who did Maggie Cheung's cheongsams in the movie "In the Mood for Love" is. I probably will pop by. But I'm not making the CS for the purposes of the wedding. I'm wearing my wedding dress throughout the day.

Someone help please...
When magazines like Martha Stewart refer to the seasons Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring. What months of the calendar do these seasons correspond to?

hellos!

e - thanks, last week was just hellish, this week isn't looking any better *wipes sweat from brow*... congrats on the new job! excited or not? eh, i kaypoh... what do you do?

haha, roses, you're not alone in your "flower madness", believe me... i also very fa-deen one. (cantonese for flower-mad people like me) haha... ooh, yesh SF is gorgeous and due to the weather and proximity to asia/canada, lots of produce and flower choices. they even have orchid farms and such. flowers are a big business. hmm, i've lived there for about 2 years, and i'd like to say i live in the Bay Area now but i don't. although my hubby does, so half my home is there lah!!!! hehehe... we are still apart for the moment, but we've decided to move to Toronto in just a few more short months. did the math and Cali is just too expensive living for us right now. sigh, what to do...

sorry i digress from the main topic - one little tip from a fellow flower devotee, don't expect singaporean florists to be able to replicate such quality as these SF or NYC florists... they really are best of the best. i found that the prices are also quite expensive even with in-season flowers in Singapore, so it's not just a matter of requiring same amount of flowers. (you won't get the same effect, volume-wise) in order to do these stylish topiaries or trailing centerpieces, i think expect about S$100-200 per centerpiece. the hotel package is usually just a simple round or candlepiece arrangement, and will not look like these without serious topping up. in the end, we negotiated OUT of the hotel florals pkg entirely as it was cheaper to find our own florist who can provide better pricing.

ok, on the spring summer fall/autumn winter thingy... it's a bit confusing, especially since different cities have different timings, so take everything i say with a +/- 1 month... but generally for north america/canada, summer is between may-aug, fall or autumn is sept-nov, winter is nov-feb, and spring is mar-may. during the transitional months, it often overlaps, for example right now in early Nov we're still in late Fall where i live, but some places already experiencing wintry weather (snippy, boston hor???).

hope that helped! another hectic week ahead, have to finish all my work before my business trip next week... woohoo, sunny Miami FL here i come. haha, got to work lah, but at night can still play, what...

That sounds wonderful! In which case, you may not want to have too much detail at the back of your gown, cos the train will cover the back for most of the church ceremony. Just a word of caution, unless the veil is made of fine lace, don't let the extra material and long veil be the reason for a huge jack-up in the price of the wedding gown. Get quotes for just the dress first. And get another quote for if the veil is thrown in.

roses
thanks for the tips! will keep them in mind.

i think so far they are all providing the veil at no extra charge. phew...

hey lilo, something we chatted about and i took a loooooong time to get back to you - here you go, the `cascading' dress by justina mccaffrey - I tried sending them to you via email but received a fatal error message that sends a chill down my spine (okay, overexagerrated)

hello roses, i didn't forget you
happy.gif

i got my mags - but i lack the time... i did find instructions on pomander, little floral wreaths for a flower girl that might interest you. As for seating cards (i figure you are referring to 'escort cards' rather than placecards) - as you are going for classic, clean lines, all I saw were too frilly.

here's a thread on DIY flowers (i didn't have the time to read it, just glanced through it, but i think the gals have got pretty good advice.)

Question I have about flowers that you might know: I like stephanotis but I think they look like jasmines - do you happen to know if they are the same? and if we can get them in Sgp?

roses

Hi hi everyone!

Hi from Hong Kong! I'm here to visit my fiance. The weather is fine but temperamental. It was so cold this morning I had to wear 3 layers of clothes. Now the sun's out and I'm in spaghetti straps.

maddcow
Thanks for your email! Haven't had time to look at the info in detail, but I will. Sorry I don't have a ready answer to the flowers question. Will keep it in mind though... And yes yes, please send me instructions on wiring flowers.

Have fun in Toronto! You sound really busy.

ribbit
Good to see you back here again.

I can't remember who it was that encouraged me to bake my own petit fours (Was it snippy?). But while my fiance is busy at work, I'm going to test out the oven in the kitchen and give it a try. Shall give you gals an account later of how realistic it is to bake wedding favors.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Hi everyone,

I'm now back... Let me share my wedding experience with you guys...

Sydney is no doubt the BEST one. The day went so quickly (as everyone would have experienced/being told) and smoothly thanks to my good friend who had excellent coordinating skills. Ppl thought that she's an event manager but the actual fact that she's in IT. She even knows that next door is serving lobster meaning we'll have to wait for the food for sometime. And she moved the games session up to keep the guests entertained!!! The ceremony was really nice. Everyone loves the baritone that I've got to sing at the wedding. The pastor forgot to ask the groom to kiss the bride though. But we did it on the chapel steps during photo time later on. That was funny. And the silly pastor didn't use my latest copy of the order of service which he didn't know that certain things are being cut out. Ppl had a bit of a laugh there. But overall it's a wonderful and romantic ceremony.

Remember me telling you guys about getting my groom to dance with me? After 9 months of perusaion, he did it!!! We just do simple "left right left right" steps and asked him to raise him arm when he thinks it's time to do a turn. Simple steps but the effect is great!!! Looks like we are well-trained for that... hahahaha... having the dance floor is the best decision that I've made for the night. I was scared that the floor might be left empty 'coz u know Chinese don't dance. But surprise surprise, the floor is packed with people! Some even have to dance on the carpet!!! That was a fun night.

Singapore is slight disappointed. Our hotel coordinator is off on our wedding day. She got her colleague to serve us on the day but we can't even find her when we need her!!! She did turn up at 5 but then it was too late when we found out our latest order of the buttonholes/corsages NEVER arrive. The room practically too small for 9 tables. My dad complained 1000 times that we don't have enough air-con. But what can I do? The makeup is a bit too pale on me. Doesn't look as natural on my AD. We were supposed to have an after-party at Bar None but realised that the coordinator didn't give us the vouchur. The worst part is the guests complained about lukewarm dishes. Food tasted good but not hot enough!!! X) Against all odds, we did have quite a good time (not as good as the Sydney one of cos), get to celebrate with our SG friends and relatives. And my in-laws are playing host this time which they feel more relaxed than the Sydney one.

Dinner party in HK was great. Love the food. Yep, 'coz it's just a dinner party with no changing of gown, I get to eat all the food and they are YUMMY!!! I wore a bright pink nonya kebaya top with white pants. I just love it!! Check out the pics gals!! Thanks for all the gals who supported my idea of wearing a kebaya!!! *hug hug* We played the express video of our Sydney wedding during the banquet and everyone enjoyed.

So there you go. Now I have to see where I'll be going next. Still undecided depending on my hubby's company's offer. Will definitely update you guys once I've got an answer!!!

Ohh... yeah... the pics are up now. Drop me an email at [email protected] and I'll invite you guys to view the pics. Videos should be up soon as well...

So stay tuned...
