A Place for Singles

si mi yi si "ga ga mai mai"?

Well for a 2 bedrm condo, the maintenance is also a few hundreds what.. then utilities another couple hundreds, then other daily expenses will all add up to quite a sum liao. No wonder Mach is working 6 day week from 6am to 7pm..

Haha.. thanks for all the 'encouragement'! I know... I do seem like a chap in need of a reality check. And I do appreciate the concerns voiced out.

simpleman, it's a relatively cheap condo.. about 400k? I'm not sure how much her mom paid for downpayment, but the monthly loan repayments will be about 1k+ for many years.
Her mom hasn't said a word about the maintenance and utilities, but I'm aiming to at least settle the utilities part, and hopefully my FW can secure a job soon after her graduation (in 2 months' time) to help out with the monthly loan payments. Long-term wise I'm aiming to shoulder half the total costs. Her mom has set aside some savings for the renovations, but the furnitures like our own bed and TV and stuffs of course must come from my pocket. Headache you bet.

Cecelia, yes I know. Pride of men. I'm already 'swallowing' my pride to agree to such an arrangement in the first place. But a man gotta do what a man gotta do. For the sake of my wife, I have to oblige to what's best for her.

Rara, currently trying to obtain a 'study loan' of sorts from close relatives. Most probably my grandfather would be forking out the money for my fees first to tide me over cos everyone knows I'm in quite a sticky situation. Income wise is my biggest worry. Next 3 years will be spent on studying to get a damn degree. I'm contemplating doing the 2nd and 3rd year part-time so I can hold a full time job while at it.

Haha.. everytime I talk about my committments, it gets more intimidating huh.

Anyway I'm taking things one step at a time. First I have to pass my bloody driving test this month (first attempt) *fingers crossed* otherwise have to continue pumping in money for lessons. Grr. Yes I'm only taking my lessons now at 23 cos coming from a below average income family my parents made it a point that I've got to pay for it if I want a driving license. After my driving is done, all my savings will be for that magical ring. And then for the rest of the year will be towards our new places' furniture. Then next year will be totally saving up for the wedding. Since school will have started by then, guess I'll have to find alternatives like giving tuition and moonlighting to have an income.

Sorry for blabbing. I get carried away at times when I have an outlet to voice my... stress.

Greetings powder,

I'm scrapping my original plans of pursuing a law degree cos it'll require me to go overseas, and that translates to exhorbitant costs and school fees as well as 4-5 years before I return. Immediate plans to settle down with my FW also prompted me to rethink my 'selfish' ambitions and stay in Singapore instead.

Like I mentioned much earlier, I screwed up my studies despite being an exceptionally bright kid when I was young. I made some wrong choices along the way and derailed of sorts. Wasted my chance of securing a better path since I did get into a good secondary school. Anyway, A levels I flunked them all the same.

To be honest, I'm currently looking at doing a diploma + degree from SIM. Full-time first year, maybe part-time for the 2nd and 3rd. Finance/banking or econs/management are my pet courses at the moment.

ahh no wories abt screwing up in earlier years... time is never wasted, only spent unnecessarily... i actually think that if i were to pick up the books now, i'd REALLY be understanding, and not just remembering... so it's not too bad either...

u've got the foundation in your head, just lack the paper to prove u're of the calibre. why i asked u is becos i dun see u any lesser judging by your train of thoughts and the way u post... believe Law would have been a good choice, but it isn't as easy as just picking given the level of commitment u have to give based on your current commitments... actually Law would have been great for me, but now i can only look towards it as something to study when i semi-retire.

anyway, wanna tell u... Dun let finances hinder u from a better choice... take your best pick locally... trust me, finances will find a way to help u... finalize your best choice and u can seek sponsorships too... there are companies able to give u bond-free sponsorships...

Thanks for your encouragement.

My confidence had taken a fair bit of battering from realists everywhere, family, relatives, friends, and even fellow forumers! But I do understand that all mean well and just hope I make the wise decision pertaining to my immediate plans as well as future career path.

People close to me have also voiced their support for me to pursue law, citing it a very suitable course given my personality. But like you said, committments do get in the way of ideals at times, and I believe this is one of them. It wasn't easy for me to come to terms with giving up my 'dream', but I put my FW's future happiness before mine, thus I opted for the more sensible choice of staying put right here on our sunny island.

Since entry into the govt unis are out of the equation, I also made a bold move of trying for a private uni. I'm risking the opportunity cost of 3 long and probably very painful years, but in a way I'm investing in a hope of a better future. Should I not go ahead and further my studies, I would most probably have to be content with securing a job with 1-2k monthly income. My wife deserves better than that.

With regards to tuition fees, in my previous post I mentioned that I might be, very fortunately may I add, receiving help from my maternal grandfather. If that is the case, at least my worries for the near future would be narrowed down to putting together enough savings for proposal ring + moving house this year, followed by tuitioning/moonlighting to save up for wedding (slated for 3rd quarter next year), and graduating with minimum 2nd upper honors for my degree course.

Piece of cake really. =/

Jiak ba ba, come back liao..

Simpleman, I'm a teochew, so dun expect me to understand canto.. I can pick up pieces here and there but v basic understanding only.

Mach, looks like you're receiving quite a bit of help already so shouldn't be a problem huh, unless you're looking at a Europe honeymoon after the wedding and buying rolf benz furniture ;)

I think most of the forumers here are not out to pour cold water on your enthusiasm, but rather open your eyes to the practical side of marriage. As you may have read/heard a thousand times, marriage is not a one-day affair and most times, Money issues are the leading causes of breakups. If you have got your finances down pat and worked out your math, then we can only congratulate and commend you for your forward planning.

All the best!

machiavelli,

Wish you the best in your endeavours. I still think that one should follow our dreams when we are young - it is a waste to give up law. But then sometimes thing will not turn out the way we want it to be - so perhaps you just have to maximize of the opportunities that are presented to you.

i walked down those path too... Dad's wish was for me to be a lawyer too, ya most pple tell me same when telling me i shuld be a lawyer... but our education system doesn't think so, hehe...

anyway u dun need a law degree to do law... or get a lawyer's pay. there's several other career paths that can give u that, i can personally atest to that. networking and broadening your general knowledge on the emerging markets, the niche and skilled-professionals career paths - will actually bring u as much a success. the subjects u looking at are gonna be a great base, and with your articulate-nature, no doubt the doors are just waiting for u to open. u just need to know where to look...

anyway Life works in mysterious ways... if u're passionately looking for a better life, somehow pple will point u to where the doors are, maybe even open abit of the door for u to see. chinese call these pple 'Gui Ren'... well, dun let aqnyone batter u down... the World's your Oyster until the day that U personally give it up.

I always like to use the example that Chaim Sze Tong became a lawyer at 40. So why not? It is not about the lawyer's pay. It is about doing what we love to do.

I won't be a lawyer. Actually I just want to world tourist to see the world.

I did do a yr of law before switching courses midway though my memory of it is getting blurred. From wat I can recall, other than NUS, there are only a no. of recognised unis overseas tat allows u to pursue a legal career in S'pore. On return, u are still required to do a course in S'pore law. In addition, there's pupillage & admissions to the Bar (unless u wanna do corporate law). So to be realistic, yeap, pretty difficult to juggle marriage with legal studies.

Well, u dun always end up in the course of ur dreams. I din. But 2nd choice isn't too bad.

I wld really love it if the events really weren't so long ago. But hor, count count oso got 10 years liao leh! Sob... Cry... Simpleman dig up painful reminders of my past...

Coz the best isn't necessarily always the most realistic option. Ok lor, or I aim to achieve it by age 40.

MOrning.. back to work today :P

To be honest, I'm also not doing what I set out to do in the beginning of my studies. I guess I'm one of those late developers who took the "scenic path" in deciding what I wanna do as a career.

Originally I wanted to join the media, but decided that wld mean irregular working hrs, and I was also drawn to the creative field of advertising. I did that for some yrs but the industry is less stable than a Corporate field, so I left and joined the "client side" instead. That's where I am today. At least this allows me to dabble in the creative aspects of things, while enjoying the stability and perks offered by an established corporation

Morning greetings!

With regards to my decision to forgo the current window of opportunity to head overseas and pursue legal studies, I have to admit it was not the easiest thing to do. I agree with you simpleman, that when possible, always strive to reach towards our dream vocation and make the best of our time when we're young. But in Singapore's context, many a time we are forced to make painful choices that do not coincide with our wants. In my case, I am fortunate that the pain of my so-called 'sacrifice' is significantly reduced as I am doing it for someone I hold dear. The financial burdens and length of time involved in doing law overseas definitely made my decision a seemingly wiser one.

As pointed out, it's never too late to go for it if it's our passion. Perhaps when life's more smoothsailing and the bumps in the future are ironed out, I can then relaunch my quest to be a lawyer.

Having said that, I'm now keeping my fingers crossed I'll ace the interview to come and get accepted into SIM. I'm still having problems making up my mind on which degree course to undertake.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Banking and Finance?
Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Economics and Finance?
Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Economics and Management?
Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Business?

Haha.. I'm only looking at these few as they are Awarded by University of London in association with the London School of Economics and Political Science - arguably the best pick of the lot on offer at SIM.

I personally feel that Banking & Finance is one of the better degrees from UOL, but I'm having reservations as my FW is graduating with the same degree. Any thoughts?

Anyway, midweek already. Hang in there ladies and gents. Good Friday's around the corner.

mach, Actually it doesnt really matter which of the degree you choose.

For pragmatic people, choose the one you can ace (this is in SG). If you are idealist, choose the one you like. Or in between.

University education is just the little foundation - which degree doesnt matter much. Take time to develop on your other poorer aspect - ie the soft skills type - as these may not be taught formally but there are equally important as well.

Erm. Muz we do tis greeting every morning? Ok, ok, go for conformity. Morning peeper! Konnichi wa!

Eh, Mach. Study family law, come haunt SB forum & specialise in divorce cases. :P I'm so evil. Burn in hell liao lah.

Mach, I think you should work backwards from where you wanna be in order to find the best fit in terms of your course of study. That means finding out from pple in the industry you wanna join (financial sector?) to figure out what kinds of theorical knowledge you need for the job.

no Konni leh... u thinking of getting a chihuahua? but i've always wanted to do the 'morning peeps' thing.

Mach, amongst those, i'd go for something that has an Economics major... we'll need alot of that in the future... also it can provide u with foundation to go into trading positions...

Har? Hv to go to court means hv to be admitted to the Bar mah. How to avoid studying law?

Wat's a Konni? Wah Powder, ur Engrish is beyond me leh. & FYI, chihuahuas are too Paris Hilton for me. I prefer big dogs. Dogs tat look like they will eat me up when I piss them off. Prefer the challenge of being kept on my toes at all times.

The ability to collate, analyze and to present them are far more important than any theoretical knowledge that you can get from books or lectures.

And more, in this fast-paced world, the ability to be flexible and change with the times is also important.

And learning is a life-long process. What you learn in the Univ is just the beginning. So, unless you are really studying to be in a specific profession: like lawyer, doctor, accountant, engineer, for eg. Then the degree course is not really important.

When I do interview to recruit people, I don't care what they study but more of their ability to show me that they know what they are talking about.

laundry, just joking lah. What I meant is that I would actually have as much knowledge about divorce as the lawyer that is going to represent me (If I want someone to represent me).

Actually for many years already, I also became an expert in paediatric medicine - last time I actually suggested to my daughter's paediatrician on the course of action after he was up against the wall (after many tests) and it finally cured my daughter. Of course I can't practise medicine but it helps to get involve (although some doctors don't like it).

where got?? but i have weak stomach la.. everybody complaing my FIL did not thoroughly cook the vegetables... then end up i lao sai...

laundry, i clarify... hehe... u say konnichiwa mah... when it's still morning... shuld be ohaiyo blah blah...

so i say no Konni lor... the chihuahua part just to rhyme with 'chiwa'...

ohayo... er, i mean, konnichi wa.
i hear my name.

oh ya G~gal, i told my bf what you were insinuating yest, and he said he was telling the truth that he doesn't think i look like one haha. well, truth or white lie, whatever lah. anyway i know that when i was in uni yr 1 at 19 yrs old, I looked like a 38y.o. hdb ah soh lor.
