Starting this post as Im seeing alot of posts on contractors and DIY. Not that much about ID.

Actually I have a question too. Are Interior Designers really very ex compared to contractors?
 


Depends on whether u want convenience or save money. IDs take a cut from sub cons so of course must pay more. how much is their cut is a different story

There are different parties involved in the renovation process:
1. Interior Designers or Main Contractors get in touch with home owners. Home owners tell them what they want.
2. IDs/ Main Cons go and source for sub contractors to do the renovation job
3. Sub contractors does the procurement of raw materials and also hire labourers to do the actual hands on job
 
Nope. Main con is what most people loosely refer to as contractors.

Main Contractors only take in what you want to do and get it done for you. Usually they hire sub cons and manage them for you.

IDs do the same + some other value added services:
- Designing your home together with you
- Coming out with the 3D mock up of your home etc.

IDs is more about the extra service.
Main contractors are more about getting it done. U cant ask the main con to help u see if this design will look nice or not. They dont really have design sense
 
I think 1-3 months is more than enough. Some IDs are very popular so they cant help you do without you booking in advance. and it takes time to discuss the work in details. And you probably will want to find a few renovators to compare their quotations. But dont do it too early in advance. the prices can keep changing according to the price of materials and labour. So alot of IDs dont want to promise a price to you first.
 
for new BTO 4rm HDB it varies around 30-50k. depending on what design you want. if your house is already old, probably need alot of removal works and hacking. so shld be slightly higher.

u can try this app called Nestr. I saw my friend using it just last week. Sounds quite fun. u swipe through design photos and based on your choices, they help you match up with the relevant interior designers. its like tinder/paktor for renovation. but i think this is only for IDs. not contractors

Hello Sushella :) we engaged an ID instead of contractor for our 4 room resale flat because we weren't certain on the designs we want so I guess that's a guiding question to help you decide between ID and contractor! If you're looking for IDs, you might find our research useful :D
