The ever-popular tropical destination wedding is one that plenty of soon-to-be newlyweds have their sights on. Breathtaking coastal views, floods of natural sunlight, and the salty sea breeze in one’s hair are attributes that give such weddings their undeniable appeal, promising a relaxed yet romantic event shrouded by serene island bliss. Bone and Grey Bridal took to Nirup Island, Indonesia—merely 45 minutes away from Singapore—where they explored effortless, elevated bridal style against the backdrop of the newly-opened The Westin Nirup Island Resort & Spa.
Not one, but three distinct looks were artfully unveiled in this styled shoot—inspired by the natural rhythm of Nirup Island, where the sea’s glistening waters provided a mystical mood and the resort’s dedicated wedding spaces brought contemporary bridal dreams to life. We speak to Joy, Founder of Bone and Grey Bridal, to uncover the experience and what it means for modern couples desiring a tropical destination wedding of their own.
What inspired the concept of this shoot and how did you bring your definition of modern destination romance to life through it?
The concept was inspired by designing a full wedding weekend wardrobe, set against the natural beauty of The Westin Nirup Island Resort & Spa. We selected locations across the resort that best reflected each moment of a destination celebration. For the welcome party look, we chose Salt Seafood Restaurant, a beachfront setting with panoramic ocean views, and styled Sabrina to reflect flowy, relaxed, beachside elegance. We embraced a mermaid-meets-siren mood, capturing the bride wading through crystal waters along the beach as the sea became part of the story.
For the main wedding day, Elsa was set against the resort’s architectural spaces like Constellate Lounge, Island Kitchen, and the main ceremony walkway, where its structured yet modern silhouette complemented the clean lines and elevated setting. This second look leaned into the softness of morning—taking advantage of the golden sunrise and The Westin Nirup’s newly-built solemnisation venue, where light, structure, and stillness came together effortlessly.
Finally, Julia was styled on the resort’s in-house yacht for the post-wedding brunch, capturing a sense of effortless, sunlit ease—something relaxed yet still refined. For this, we shifted into a more casual-chic expression, setting sail with a relaxed yet elevated take on destination wedding style. The clean lines and soft drape of the gown moved beautifully with the sea breeze.
Together, the looks tell a story of modern destination romance—where each moment feels distinct but cohesive through a When you already have such a stunning venue, you don’t have to go too big with your outfits. The experience also highlights the versatility of our gowns across different areas of the island, showing how they allow couples to celebrate love in ways that feel intentional, beautiful, and entirely their own.

Sabrina is a super unique and versatile two-piece slip set. She features a comfortable and flowy satin, A-line slip dress and a removable organza overlay dress, she’s perfect for any occasion—from reception to elopement to after-party! The set includes a pair of organza ties that you can use to cinch the sleeves, creating a soft bishop sleeve look. We’ve also seen brides wear this set with a self-styled belt!
Elsa features a snug and shapely strapless, straight neckline with a sculpted corset bodice that perfectly hugs the figure. It flows effortlessly into a textured A-line chiffon skirt, complete with a charming neck scarf that can be used in 4 different ways.
The Julia gown is one of our best-selling styles, loved for its timeless and universally flattering design. It features a minimalist column silhouette with a unique empire waist, paired with a clean boat neckline and a low-curved, open back and a soft draping train. Crafted in French satin, the gown balances structure and fluidity, creating an elongated, elegant line that feels both classic and modern. Brides love her high neckline, which contrasts with a more open back, adding subtle drama without compromising minimalism.
All gowns are part of our Ready-to-Ship collection, which is ideal for brides on shorter timelines, though stock is limited. If your size is sold out, we can remake the gown in either a standard or custom size, with a production time of up to two months. Both dresses also allow for minor customisations, such as adjustments to the train length.
How would you describe the type of bride each gown fits best?
Sabrina is designed for the effortlessly cool bride, who loves minimalist style with a soft, ethereal twist. This bride loves simplicity, but still longs for an editorial look and feel. The sheer organza overlay adds dimension while keeping the base silhouette clean. This dress is perfect for beach weddings, city hall ceremonies, destination weddings, or intimate celebrations where heavy gowns feel unnecessary—as the loose, flowy fit and lightweight fabrics make it easy to walk, dance, and travel in. Brides in Sabrina will love the versatility it offers, as she can remove the overlay for a second look at the reception or after-party. This is for someone whose style is understated but intentional, someone who doesn’t need dramatic embellishments to feel bridal.
The Elsa is best suited for the modern romantic bride who loves clean lines, soft movement, and wants to make a subtle fashion statement—not everybody will be prepared for the asymmetric waistline it features. Elsa is great for city weddings, garden ceremonies, or intimate celebrations, and someone who loves the idea of transforming their styling throughout the day as the dress can be worn with or without the scarf. At the same time, Elsa is great for most body silhouettes—for example, pear and triangle shapes—because the corset bodice emphasises waist definition, while the A-line skirt offers movement and forgiveness through the hips.
The Julia bride appreciates timeless minimalism with a modern edge. She is effortlessly elegant and drawn to clean, refined silhouettes, looking for a gown that feels classic but not traditional or overdone, confident in understated design, preferring cut and fit over embellishment. She is likely planning a city, garden, or intimate wedding where simplicity feels intentional.
Are there any bridal trends reflected in these gowns that you’re seeing more brides gravitate toward recently?
We’re definitely seeing brides gravitate toward more versatile and fashion-forward pieces.
One trend reflected in these gowns is the rise of two-piece bridal sets and separates, which we’ve been testing out for a while now. Brides of today often have multiple moments throughout their wedding—ceremony, reception dinner, after-party—so pieces that can transform or be styled differently feel much more practical and economical. Two-piece gowns allow brides to remove a layer or change the look without needing a full outfit change. Another shift is towards lighter, more relaxed silhouettes, especially as intimate weddings, destination weddings, and smaller celebrations become more common. Minimal slip dresses or airy, layered looks give brides something elegant but comfortable enough for those settings.
Finally, we’re also seeing interest in structural details that feel unique yet minimalist—things like corsetry, unique waistlines, neck scarves and capes, or interesting layering of fabrics. These elements create distinctive shapes and visual interest without relying on heavy embellishment. So overall, brides seem to be looking for gowns that are versatile, wearable, and structurally interesting—pieces that feel modern and adaptable to how weddings are evolving today.
What’s one practical tip you’d give couples planning a tropical destination wedding when it comes to their outfits or re-creating looks similar to those in the shoot?
Choose fabrics and silhouettes that move and breathe with the environment. In tropical settings, lightweight materials and relaxed shapes not only keep you comfortable in the heat and humidity, but also elevate how the outfit looks in motion. This is exactly why we chose these dresses: they are lightweight, allow for ease of movement, and remain visually striking, making them ideal for everything, from beachfront moments to more elevated settings throughout a destination wedding celebration.
