Nicole and Taejun’s Intimate Peranakan Solemnisation at Little Social
Nicole and TaeJun celebrated their union and Nicole’s Peranakan’s heritage in an intimate solemnisation at Little Social.
Nicole, 31, and Taejun, 29, met through a common friend not long after she moved to Seoul, Korea, four years ago. After an intimate proposal on a cold, snowy day, the pair embarked on planning their wedding. Nicole and Taejun had originally envisioned for a quiet celebration in Singapore, but decided to expand it to an intimate solemnisation at Little Social. Surrounded by their closest family and friends, it became a celebration filled with warmth, laughter, and meaning.
Tell us your story. How did you meet?
Nicole: We are a Singaporean-Korean couple living in Seoul with our two dogs. We first met in December 2021, not long after I had moved to Seoul. One of my best friends from Singapore was doing her Masters degree at Korea University back then – she happened to be a classmate of Taejun’s and decided to introduce us.
Tell us about your proposal – how did Taejun propose?
Nicole: He had originally planned to propose on Christmas Day but ended up doing it a little earlier. It wasn’t something he had planned for that day — he just realised he wouldn’t be able to hide the ring once he picked it up. On a whim, he brought me to a quiet park in Yeouido, asked me to close my eyes, and put the box in my hands. It was a cold, snowy winter day in December, and the park was completely empty. It was just the two of us, and it was perfect.
Nicole, did you know a proposal was coming before it happened, or were you taken completely by surprise?
Nicole: I had no idea it was happening. We were in the midst of planning our solemnisation in Singapore then, and while we had already discussed it with our parents and were in the midst of getting everything arranged, I didn’t think I would receive a ring so soon.
Take us back to your wedding day: What was your wedding planning like?
Both: Our wedding planning was relatively low-key. We originally planned to sign the marriage papers at the Registry of Marriage and have a lunch with our combined family afterwards. But we decided to expand it once we realised that it would be our one and only opportunity to do something of a ceremony in Singapore, since we had planned for our main wedding to take place in Busan.
We picked Little Social because Nicole’s family has their roots in Peranakan heritage, and Peranakan fare would be a refreshing change from quintessential Chinese cuisine. With the help of our friends who very kindly went to recce places for us in our stead because we weren’t in Singapore, we found the perfect spot in Little Social.
We originally planned on just having traditional Peranakan cuisine served at the Registry of Marriage lunch, but many places that we had approached simply couldn’t fit the bill because of either limited capacity or limited decoration options with the venue. But thanks to the lovely Dennes and Danial at Little Social, everything went perfectly. The décor had a personal touch – it was vibrant and beautiful – the food was fantastic, and the overall ambience fit the vibe we were looking for — something culturally rooted and traditional.
Take us back to your wedding day: What was the day like and how were you feeling?
Both: We started the day with a minor hiccup — we arrived at the venue later than our guests because the hotel we were staying at, for some odd reason, had refused to allow Nicole’s makeup artist up to the suite to help her get ready for the ceremony. But thankfully, everything fell into place and we swapped the schedule around with the help of some family members, got the tea ceremony going, and then proceeded to register our marriage in the presence of our closest family members and friends! In the end, it was perfect — a lovely, intimate celebration surrounded by the people who matter most, celebrating in a way that felt uniquely us.
What did your family/friends have to say about your wedding day?
Both: Our families and friends loved it. They told us the venue was beautiful, the food was exceptional, and the whole experience felt wonderfully unique.
What is one lesson you’ve learned from your wedding planning that you’d like to share with other couples?
Both: Hiccups are bound to happen. What matters is how you respond to them.Don’t take on the burden of planning everything by yourself, especially if you don’t have a wedding planner. Lean on your friends and family — they want to help and will show up for you in whatever capacity they can. We couldn’t have pulled off our Singapore ceremony without our wonderful friends who scouted venues for us, tasted food for us, and family who helped us pivot when things didn’t go according to plan on the day itself.
When something goes wrong, acknowledge it, adapt quickly, and then let it go. Don’t let a minor setback overshadow what the day is really about — celebrating your love surrounded by the people who matter most. Our hotel hiccup could have derailed the morning, but instead it became just a funny story we’ll remember. The ceremony itself was perfect, and that’s what counts.
