A comprehensive guide to hair removal before your wedding day
Sugaring, depilatory creams or IPL hair removal? Here’s a comparison of all the methods to achieving silky smooth, hairless skin before a wedding.
The grooming checklist before the wedding doesn’t only include a top-notch skincare routine, impeccable glam, flattering hairstyling, and a brand-new manicure. Hair removal is an essential component of the total body makeover, and it’s not just limited to the brides wearing sleeveless gowns or outfits with high leg slits. Grooms, too, are not exempt from this requirement that will have their profiles looking clean, polished and presentable on the big day.

A variety of hair removal techniques exist, each with different price points, benefits and drawbacks to consider. Those with sensitive skin might prefer sugaring over waxing for its natural ingredients, whereas the beauty-obsessed brides eyeing long-term results might choose Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) in spite of its higher costs. Still, the effectiveness of IPL on certain skin tones is not guaranteed, so it’s important to do one’s due diligence to find out which hair removal method is most appropriate according to specific needs.
From the high precision of threading when it comes to face-defining features such as the eyebrows to the silky smooth skin that lasts for about a month after a painfully thorough wax on the legs, here’s a comprehensive guide to all the hair removal methods available so you won’t be scrambling for a last-minute shave.

Only recommended for last-minute grooming due to the convenience of being able to do it at home with ease and speed, shaving should be done 1–2 days before the wedding. This traditional way of hair removal is pain-free when done correctly and undoubtedly affordable, but not without its own set of risks—such as suffering from cuts, razor burn on ingrown hairs. Regrowth is just as quick, typically occurring within 1-3 days, or an even shorter duration depending on genetics and hormones. And from a skincare perspective, shaving removes the top layer of skin, strips it of natural oils, and can compromise the skin’s protective barrier—leading to dryness and vulnerability to irritation. This, coupled with coarse regrowth, makes the method unsuitable for areas of skin where one might want long-term smoothness. Pro-tip: always use a fresh razor, exfoliate before shaving, and apply a calming moisturiser after to prevent irritation.
2. Waxing
Waxing is best for the legs, bikini area, arms, and brows, and can be done 3–5 days before the wedding. Apart from enjoying smooth skin for the next 2-4 weeks, the hair on waxed parts also grows back finer, and the process helps to exfoliate and remove dead skin. It’s not ideal for those with a low pain tolerance, however, and those with more sensitive skin might have to deal with redness or bumps due to damage or potential bacterial infections of the hair follicles caused by waxing. Take note that this method can’t be carried out on very short hair, and it’d be helpful to start waxing minimally 2–3 months before the wedding to get used to the process and reduce irritation nearing to and on the big day.

Modern brides might opt for IPL or laser hair removal instead, seeing that the hefty price tag is cancelled out by long-term hair reduction as a result. Whether it’s for the underarms, bikini area, or even facial hair, this method reduces hair growth, ingrown hairs, and smoothens skin effectively over time without discomfort, and advancements in at-home devices make it accessible for many people. Results are gradual and best seen after completing a full course of treatment that involves multiple sessions spaced weeks apart, so do plan this in advance, with starting 6–9 months before the wedding being a safe estimate. Be warned that this method is not effective on all hair or skin types , specifically: tanned skin, darker skin tones, very blonde, red, grey, or white hair, areas with tattoos, moles, or open wounds, and those with certain skin conditions or diseases like psoriasis.
4. Sugaring
Should you suffer from sensitive skin , fret not—sugaring is a safe and appropriate hair removal method to try out and can be done 3–5 days before the wedding. It’s less irritating than waxing due to the natural mix of ingredients used, namely sugar, water, and lemon, which adhere to the hair rather than the skin. The method also removes hair in the direction of hair growth, which minimises breakage and the likelihood of ingrown hairs, all while gently exfoliating the skin. It’s unfortunately not always widely available, so some effort has to be taken should one prefer to DIY, especially since it’s more challenging on coarser hair. Try sugaring at least once or twice before the final appointment to ensure the skin does not react negatively on the wedding day.

Depilatory creams use thioglycolic acid to break down the keratin protein in hair, causing the hair to come off along with the product after rinsing. Painless and easy to manage, this fast treatment can be done 2-3 days before the wedding without any risk of cuts. But the active chemicals in such creams cause it to have a strong odour, and some time is needed to get rid of the lingering scent. Additionally, it’s crucial to follow the usage instructions carefully as chemical burns could cause skin damage or allergic reactions . Always do a patch test a few weeks in advance, especially on sensitive skin.
6. Threading
Another popular, no-chemical method of hair removal is threading, which provides precise shaping for small, face-defining features such as the eyebrows, and can target facial hair such as that of the upper lip. Effects last longer than if one were to shave, and it should ideally be done 2–4 days before the wedding. Slight pain and temporary redness or irritation is commonly experienced with threading, so do avoid makeup for a few hours after and apply aloe gel a cold compress to reduce redness.
