7 Sweet and Fun Gatecrash Games in Singapore That Won’t Stress Out Your Groom

Gatecrash games are a fun Singaporean wedding tradition, but not every groom looks forward to being embarassed or stressed out because of a game.

Gatecrash games are a beloved tradition in Singaporean weddings. Derived from the ancient Chinese wedding tradition of testing the groom’s sincerity in marrying the bride, gatecrash games today are mostly done for the fun and excitement. While gatecrash games add excitement, laughter and a touch of mischief to the morning of the wedding, grooms who dread overly complicated or embarrassing challenges might find the idea of facing a series of dares stressful.

Thankfully, gatecrash games need not be embarrassing or stressful. There are plenty of sweet and heartfelt challenges that celebrate your love for one another. From creative love quizzes to playful ang bao negotiations, here are seven sweet and enjoyable gatecrash games that won’t stress your groom out.

1. The Classic 酸甜苦辣 Challenge

The 酸甜苦辣 Challenge is a beloved and time-honoured tradition that symbolises the different stages of marriage, and no gatecrash is complete with it. It can be played as a standalone challenge or incorporated into other games as a lighthearted “penalty” whenever the groom or groomsmen make a mistake.

The four flavour profiles – sour, sweet, bitter and spicy – remind the groom that he and his bride will encounter highs and lows in their marriage. By consuming all four flavours, the groom is considered to have overcome the symbolic trials of marriage and shown his willingness to weather every season of life with his bride.

Instead of approaching the game with the mindset of torturing the groom and his groomsmen with the most extreme versions of each flavour, keep it lighthearted and fun by striking a balance. Go with simple and easy flavours like lemon for sour, honey for sweet, bitter tea for bitter and mild spice for spicy.

2. Love Knowledge Quiz aka “How Well Do You Know Her” Quiz

Testing the groom on how well he knows his bride is a sweet and fun way to start their wedding day. Not only does it spark laughter and encourage interactions between the groom, groomsmen and bridesmaids, it is also a great way to relive special memories and show everyone just how much he cherishes and pays attention to the little details that make her who she is.

Have the bride draft up a series of questions in advance, such as her favourite food, the exact date of their first date, or even quirky little habits only her groom would know. To keep things fun and up the challenge, bridesmaids can throw in a few tricky questions like how many pairs of shoes she owns or what she said when she first met him – just to watch the groom sweat a little.

Each wrong answer earns him a penalty – it can be as simple as a silly dance, a doodle on the face or even downing one of the four flavours from the 酸甜苦辣 Challenge.

3. Guess the Kiss

A similar game to the Love Knowledge Quiz, the Guess the Kiss game requires the groom to correctly identify the lipstick mark that belongs to his bride. The bride and her bridesmaids can prepare several small pieces of paper with a lipstick print from different women – or even men! The groom is then required to identify the one that he thinks belongs to his bride. If he gets it wrong, he gets a penalty. If he gets it right, he gets one step closer to meeting his bride!

4. Form an acrostic poem with the bride’s name

Tasking the groom and his groomsmen with creating an acrostic poem using the bride’s name is a charming and creative way to add a personal touch to a gatecrash. For each letter of her name, the groom comes up with a word or short phrase that reflects her personality or describes her person.

This playful challenge allows him to express his affection in a heartfelt way, while also creating a memorable moment captured beautifully by the wedding videographer. To make it even more special, the groom can pen the acrostic onto a large card as a keepsake gift for his bride—a tangible token of love that she can treasure long after the celebrations.

5. Dance Challenge

Instead of physical challenges, a dance challenge can add a fun and lighthearted twist to the gatecrash. The groom and his groomsmen must dance to a chosen song or perform a trending dance in order to get one step closer to meeting the bride. The bride or her bridesmaids take on the role of judges, rating them based on their effort and accuracy in performing the dance, turning the challenge into an entertaining and memorable moment for everyone.

6. 10 Promises to the bride

Another sweet and stress-free gatecrash game is for the groom to pen down 10 promises to his bride. These promises can range from playful commitments—like always letting her choose the movie—to more meaningful vows about his commitment to uphold his wedding vows and cherish her. Once written, the groom can recite them aloud for his bride before he is allowed to meet her.

7. Ang Bao Negotiation

Another staple game during a gatecrash, the game of negotiating for angbaos is a lighthearted and entertaining challenge. In this game, the groom must “bribe” his way into the bride’s home with angbaos, but the twists lie in the playful negotiations with the bridesmaids. They might set fun challenges—like answering questions about the bride, performing a short dance, or sharing a heartfelt message—before agreeing to accept his offer. This can get very playful, with back-and-forth bargaining.

This game is often the last game the groom will have to play before he gains entry into the bride’s home. Once the bridesmaids are satisfied with the amount he has “bribed” them with, they will open the door and allow him to enter to meet the bride.
