Bernice and Clement’s Dreamy Outdoor Wedding at Wheeler’s Tropikana

Bernice and Clement went on many adventures together for six years before they were engaged. Their wedding reflected their fun-loving nature as a couple.
Not only does Bernice, 30, Marketing Manager, and Clement, 30, Software Engineer, discover that they share similar values and perspectives in life, they all share an every-growing thirst for adventure and sports. Learning new things together only made the foundation of their relationship stronger as they build memories and trust.
After Clement planned a very meaningful proposal while they were diving in Bali, the couples decided to have a European countryside-style wedding to share their love for the outdoors with their family and friends.
Tell us a little bit about your story.
Bernice: We were actually match-made by our mutual friends! We started as friends for about six months before officially getting into a relationship, and after six years of dating, he popped the question.
We have always shared the love for water sports, nature, and the outdoors. Most importantly, we share similar values and perspectives on life. While we were already active individuals, it was nice to find someone to experience all these adventures with. Over the past six years, we’ve spent our time doing what we love together—learning and trying new sports like wakeboarding, surfing, surfskating, hiking, diving, and more! We also love backpacking, staying in hostels, and making friends with people from around the world.
What do you love most about your partner?
Bernice: What I love most about him is how unconditionally he loves me. He has always prioritised me, encouraging me to stay positive during tough times and challenging me to be brave, embracing every part of life with courage and stepping out of my comfort zone.
I knew he was “the one” when I noticed a deep cut on his hand and asked how he got it. He casually said it happened while fixing my watch. He knew that the watch held sentimental value to me, and I was quite upset when it stopped working. He quietly went out of his way to fix it for me. Over the past six years, I have never once felt his love waver.
Most importantly, he loves and cares for his family. Since I am very close to mine, that is something very important to me.
Clement: I love her for how much she cares for her family and friends. She is kind and thoughtful, always making an effort to be there for the people she loves. Every small gesture from her is very genuine, and those around her can always feel it. This is something that I really appreciate because she makes my family and friends feel the same way too.
What made me fall in love with my partner wasn’t any grand moments but a series of little things. I am comfortable around her and there was no need for pretence. Even in the ordinary moments like having a meal together, going on adventures or sitting in silence, it always feels right with her.
What was the proposal like?
Bernice: Before the proposal, Clement had been secretly liaising with our diving instructor from Bali to share his plan to propose when we are doing our diving course there. Clement proposed underwater during our open water course, which was the perfect representation of us as a couple. Our instructor even borrowed a beautiful, large white seashell from the seabed (which he returned to the ocean afterward) for Clement to use as a ring box. The seashell was almost the size of my palm!
Down on one knee, Clement opened the seashell to reveal the ring inside. I was completely surprised and thought he was crazy, but of course I nodded! It actually took me a while to process what had just happened.
The ring itself was special. It was a custom-made aquamarine gemstone ring, designed with hand-drawn waves on the sides to symbolise our underwater proposal.
Was there anything special or meaningful about your wedding venue?
Bernice: We have always wanted a casual, European countryside-style wedding. However, in Singapore, it’s challenging to find an outdoor venue that can accommodate over 100 guests without splitting them up. Wheeler’s Tropikana was a dream come true—it felt like a little slice of Bali, giving us the Bali wedding vibes without having to fly our guests overseas. And from the joy on our guests’ faces, I think they had a great time letting their hair down on our special day! We sent a summer dress code mood board to most of our guests, and they made the effort to match it, including our parents! Our wedding playlist was a nostalgic mix of love songs from the ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s (we are millennials), ensuring that even our parents and relatives enjoyed the music. We also screened a casual beach photoshoot we had taken in Bali on the big screen. The photos by the ocean really enhanced the vibes.
We bought parasols for the outdoor solemnisation in case it was too sunny. We gave our guests portable fans as wedding favours as we wanted to gift something practical! As a fun surprise, we ordered ice cream cups from Birds of Paradise, one of our frequent date spots, to share that memory with our guests. We even borrowed a “signboard” from them to create an “ice cream station” next to our buffet line. Though unfortunately, no one took photos! The ice cream cups were gone very quickly, which was a great sign that our guests loved them!
Tell us about your wedding outfits!
Bernice: For my first outfit, it was an outfit I had planned to wear years ago when I found my late maternal grandma’s kebaya in my wardrobe. She raised me, and I still remember her lending me this exact kebaya top for an art project during my school days. She passed away 12 years ago, and I had completely forgotten about it until I rediscovered it in my wardrobe. The moment I saw it, I knew I had to wear it for my wedding. Since the kebaya was very old, possibly something she wore in her younger days, I took extra care to preserve it. I had it altered to fit me perfectly, and when I finally wore it, it was an emotional moment. As the photographers snapped away, I felt as if I was taking photos with her. I will be keeping the kebaya with me for as long as I can.
Finding a minimalistic wedding dress in Singapore was surprisingly tough! The options were limited compared to ballgowns. I had a design in mind, so I decided to customise my gown with Wedding Crafters. I rented their simple Sarah gown and added a statement bow at the back to make it unique. I wanted something comfortable, simple, and elegant, something that felt like me! On the topic of comfort, Clement and I both wore sneakers because we wanted our wedding to be casual AND comfortable. And we’re so glad we did!
Clement: For my first outfit, we wanted to find something that matched my heritage too. My grandfather is Taiwanese and so a traditional Chinese top would make sense. For the evening, my dad, my father-in-law, and I had our suits tailored at Coloc The Tailor, even our little cousin who was the ring bearer! With years of experience serving international clients, they could understand the theme we were going for. Since it was an outdoor wedding, fabric and colour choices were important. I went for a white wedding suit eventually, instead of the usual khaki.
What was your wedding day like?
Bernice: We wanted a fun and meaningful wedding and so it was planned with lots of activities throughout the day. Wheeler’s Tropikana has two levels, which allows us to create different experiences for each part of the day. We held our tea ceremony on the upper level, followed by an outdoor solemnisation on the lawn, and ended with an alfresco evening reception on the first level.
We were insanely blessed with such perfect weather! It wasn’t sunny but breezy, making it possible for the men wearing suits to keep their jackets on. Before walking down the aisle with my dad, I did a First Look with him instead of Clement. Since I’m really close to my dad, I felt it was a meaningful way to capture that moment. But as a typical Asian dad, he didn’t cry… I did!
The outdoor solemnisation setting was absolutely dreamy. Our little cousin was eager to be part of the wedding, so we gave him the special role of ring security, which he took very seriously! To kick off the evening, Clement’s groomsmen, our two flower men opened the floor with a dance they had practiced for weeks before the wedding. Their performance set the tone for a fun and lively night!
After our first march-in, we joined our guests for dinner. One of the most touching moments of the evening was the live performance by my sister and a close friend from university. They had never met before but decided to perform together, practicing in secret without us knowing. They also kept the dedicated songs a secret from us. Our guests were so supportive, waving their phones’ flashlights along with the music, which made the moment even more special. I was truly, deeply moved.
Towards the end of the night, we had the Bouquet Toss on the lawn. It was drizzling and so everyone used the parasols to shelter themselves from the drizzle. It was such an adorable sight to see them all huddled together!
What was the most memorable moment of your wedding?
Bernice: It’s almost impossible to choose just one, as the entire day was filled with so much love from our family and friends. But if I really had to pick, it would be our solemnisation ceremony. Walking down the aisle with my dad, hearing him say to Clement, “Take care of my daughter, she’s my precious”, exchanging our vows, and seeing the excited, joyful faces of our guests—some even tearing up for us—are memories I will always treasure.
Clement: The most memorable moment during our wedding was when I saw Bernice walking down the aisle in her beautiful gown. In that instant, I was overwhelmed with emotions, realizing that in just a matter of moments, she would officially become my wife. It was a surreal and heartfelt experience, one that I will never forget.
Another deeply significant moment, similar to Bernice’s, was when her dad entrusted her to me, placing her hand in mine and saying that he was now handing over his daughter to me. Hearing those words filled me with a strong sense of responsibility and love. I wanted to assure him that she would always be in good hands and that I would take the best care of her.
