Angeline and Kelvin’s Shanghai-Themed Wedding at The Riverhouse
Angeline and Kelvin donned Old Shanghai finery and played their own music video at their Oriental wedding at The Riverhouse.
When Angeline Teo Wei Ren, 35, Teacher, and Kelvin Ng Leong Wei, 36, Lecturer in ITE, Game Art and Design were paired up by mutual friends for a doubles game of badminton, they didn’t know that pairing would be for life. After Angeline said yes to Kelvin’s second proposal, the couple flew to Jeju to produce their very own music video, which they surprised guests with at their unique, Shanghai-themed wedding at The Riverhouse on 6 May 2023.
How did you first meet each other?
We met during a badminton session organised by a group of common friends. We were paired up for one of the double games.
What do you love most about your partner?
Kelvin: She teaches me how to be more “human-like.” I love how she takes care of the people around me, and how she is detail-oriented.
Angeline: Kelvin is very “outcome-oriented”, and opposites attract. Once he is set to achieve a goal, he is able to focus and charge towards the desired outcome. He is filial to his parents but he always annoys his mom. He has a strong sense of brotherhood and will do anything he is trusted to.
What was the proposal like?
Kelvin: The first proposal was at my home. I learnt to play the saxophone, however I got rejected for not being detailed and having no surprise element. The second proposal was a surprise staycation at Fullerton Hotel, with decorations and a BIGGER proposal ring.
Where was your pre-wedding held?
Kelvin: Angeline wanted to have an overseas pre-wedding shoot, thus we engaged a wedding helper, “Superhelper” from Jeju, for our outfits and make-up, and Shutterpresso from Jeju for our wedding photo-shoot. We used the trip to create our wedding invites, and pre-wedding shoot as well as a vacation.
We also shot our wedding video on the trip. My wife had always dreamt of producing a music video. Thus, with my experience and expertise as an ex-media business owner, we filmed, sang, edited, and produced her music video, that also acts as our wedding theme song and wedding speech.
What was your wedding theme?
We wanted something out of the norm and unlike what everyone has seen. We didn’t want to follow the normal process; however, we wanted to keep the traditions. We used SingaporeBrides to help us brainstorm for unique wedding venues and ideas.
After looking at the wedding venue at The Riverhouse, we saw that we could do a very oriental theme and yet, we were also able to have our wedding dresses, Shanghai theme, and a Chinese vibe. We took care of all the wedding planning and wedding styling and design ourselves–all the invitation cards, wedding favours, reception area, backdrop, and invitations.
Working with The Riverhouse was very easy, as the logistics and planning of the wedding lunch was handled by them. We could solely focus on our fast-paced and eventful wedding. Their wedding lunch was really nice; our guests loved it. Working with Annabel Law Productions was also one of our best decisions. Our photographer, Avril, guided us and ensured that we enjoyed the process. Even when our schedule was so packed, she was still able to grab us to allow us to have a photoshoot at the venue. We would like to also thank Annabel Law Productions and The Riverhouse for accommodating us in this out-of-the-norm wedding arrangement.
As for our programme flow, since we did not want to be like everyone else, we planned it in a way that we wanted and with things we wanted to share with our guests. Our first march-in song was mixed by ourselves, “First Love” and “Lalala Love Song”, as we wanted a different kind of march-in to surprise everyone. In the middle when the song changed, we did a wefie with our brothers and sisters, and turned around to see all the guests present before continuing our march. Immediately, we went for our table shots with Angeline’s wedding dress as we thought it would be a waste to not take table shots with that. This was quickly followed by Angeline doing her makeover for her third look.
Before our second march-in, we played our music video and our speeches in-between the music video, thenwe had our live band “Tacetband”, made up of Angeline’s colleagues from school, to sing for our march-in. As we wanted to thank our our guests personally, we prepared fresh flowers for every single guest. On our super long march, we gave out flowers and thanked every single person. This could not be done without our super hardworking brothers and sisters.
What was the most memorable moment of your wedding?
We had a lot of segments in the wedding. The most memorable moments of the whole wedding process would be our music video production day in Jeju, followed by our second march-in moment. As the march-in was tied together with our speech for our parents, the video came as a surprise as everyone was still expecting us to head to the stage for a thank you speech. We embedded our speech in the surprise music video, and our parents were moved to tears.
