5 Relationship Resolutions To Make for 2023

You’ll only need to make these 5 simple resolutions to strengthen your relationship this year.

If you’re one of those who make a list of goals for the new year, why not take the opportunity to reflect on your relationships and make resolutions for the coming year? Whether you’re in a long-term or not, there’s always room for improvement and for strengthening the bond you share with your loved one. Here are five relationship resolutions you can consider making for 2023:

1. Communicate more openly and honestly

Communication is a vital part of any relationship. Be more open with your partner about your feelings, concerns, and needs in 2023. The goal is to help you better understand each other and resolve any issues that are bound to arise between the two of you. Trying to understand how your loved ones are feeling is also important. Listen actively and try to understand what they mean. It means listening closely to what they have to say and participating fully in the conversation, rather than simply waiting for your turn and thinking about yourself.

Making an effort to truly listen to what your loved ones have to say can show them that you value their thoughts and feelings. This can involve asking questions, making eye contact, and avoiding distractions like checking your phone or watching the TV while they are speaking.

2. Learn to forgive

Sometimes, a loved one’s actions that upset you can bring feelings of hurt or anger. If you don’t accept and process those emotions, you can start to bear a grudge inside you that can accumulate over time. The problem with grudges is that they breed resentment, which can lead to irreversible damage to your relationship. Be forgiving in your relationships, whether by letting go of past mistakes or by moving forward after disagreements. There is no need to pretend that what happened didn’t happen or ignore it; it is simply a matter of letting go of all your negative feelings and thoughts.

3. Show appreciation and gratitude

It’s easy to take our loved ones for granted, but showing appreciation and gratitude can go a long way in strengthening a relationship. In 2023, try to regularly express your appreciation and gratitude towards your loved ones, whether through verbal affirmations or small gestures like leaving notes or buying the, little gifts. Find out what their love languages are. Take the time to show your loved ones that you appreciate them. It will help them feel valued and loved, which can foster a stronger sense of connection.

4. Make time for each other

We know Life can get busy and unfortunately, we let other commitments and responsibilities take priority over relationships. But making time for your loved ones is crucial for maintaining a healthy relationship. In 2023, make an effort to schedule regular quality time with your loved ones, whether that means having a weekly date night or simply carving out time to spend together without distractions. This can be especially important in long-distance relationships, where it can be more challenging to find time to connect.

However, don’t just make the time. Be more present in your relationship, so that means putting your phone away when you’re with your loved one or making an effort to fully engage in activities and conversations.

5. Learn to apologise

“I’m sorry” seems to be one of the hardest phrases to say, even though a simple apology can actually soften the mood during an argument. We’re only human and humans are impulsive and imperfect. Sometimes we may be careless with our words and actions, but we let pride stand in between us and our loved ones’ feelings. Some couples go to bed angry, then wake up the next morning and brush everything aside. This can lead to a buildup of resentment. In 2023, take responsibility for your actions, and humbly apologise. If you find it hard to say the words, start by writing a note or sending a text.

Making resolutions for your relationships can help you focus more time on your loved ones. Whether you choose to focus on improving communication, practicing forgiveness, or being more present, the important thing is to make a conscious effort to prioritise your relationships in 2023!
