Shi Yun and Darren’s Hiking Pre-Wedding Shoot on Coney Island
Shi Yun and Darren put on their hiking boots and backpacks and went on a road trip around Singapore for their adventurous pre-wedding shoot.
Ng Shi Yun, 30, Accountant, and Darren Ng, 31, Compliance Officer, met through a lucky case of mistaken identity! The adventurous pair originally had plans to document their love for hiking with a campervan road trip through Austria, so they got creative and donned their hiking boots for their local pre-wedding shoot.
How did you first meet each other?
Shi Yun: It was the year 2008, when we were both enrolled in the School of Business at Temasek Polytechnic. We were in the same class and I mistook him for another guy in our class when I talked to him on MSN Messenger. That’s how we started to chat and got to know each other better.
What was the proposal like?
Shi Yun: The proposal happened during our trip to the U.S. He popped the question on our 125th monthsary. At that time, we were at Lake Tahoe. It was in the morning and after our hike down to the lake, he was behaving weirdly. Thinking back, he probably felt anxious and nervous. We were about to head back to the car park after our hike and he suggested we sit down and take some photos before leaving. It was then that he popped the question.
We heard that you originally wanted to shoot on a road trip overseas. How did it turn into a Coney Island pre-wedding shoot?
We initially wanted a campervan-inspired photoshoot in Austria because we love to hike and enjoyed the road trips we have been on overseas. The concept of our local shoot was to capture that adventure aspect. We told our photographer that we wanted our photos to look as though they were taken somewhere foreign, and not Singapore. She suggested a few places and we decided to go with Coney Island. We love how those photos turned out.
Where else did you go?
As for the next location, Temasek Polytechnic, it was an obvious one. That was because we met and got to know each other there. Sadly, they did not allow us to shoot on the campus due to COVID-19 safety measures, so the shoot over there was a quick one. We just took some shots outside the school.
My husband loves his good old kopi-o-kosong and toast so what better place to take some shots than at an old-school traditional coffee shop at Heap Seng Leong. It would be something unique. We received a lot of stares during the shoot even though it was during non-peak hour. But we killed two birds with one stone as we had a good tea break there while having our shoot.
We found the last location at Canterbury Road on Instagram, and we loved its beautiful landscape and vibe of being overseas. Our photographer recommended taking some champagne-popping shots there, and so it kind of turned into a picnic-themed shoot. We had lots of fun shooting it!
It was a tiring full day shoot but thinking back, it was a great experience with many unforgettable memories created. We did not regret taking our pre-wedding photos in Singapore at all.
