Aileen and Christian’s Magnificent Wedding at JW Marriott Surabaya

To celebrate their big day, Aileen and Christian put on a spectacular show at JW Marriott Surabaya for their family and friends. Complete with LED lights specially brought in for the wedding, special effects, and even a special guest appearance, their big day has topped the charts and was definitely a night to remember.

Christian, 33, businessman, and Aileen, 30, founder of MoonGlow Mask, met through mutual friends over a dinner. Even though they’d once attended the same college and stayed in the same condominium, their paths had not crossed before. When they met, everything fell into place perfectly. After a romantic proposal, the lovebirds got married in magnificent style at JW Marriott Surabaya on 24 January 2019.

How did you meet?

Aileen: Chris has been schooling in Singapore since he was 9 till the age of 22 before returning to Surabaya to help his family with their family business. He visits Singapore from time to time.

We met through common friends over dinner on one of his visits back to Singapore. After getting to know each other more, we found out that we used to go to the same college and even stayed in the same condominium, but our paths never once crossed. We’d never met each other! I believe it was God’s plan for me to meet Christian at the right age with the maturity to appreciate the man he is at a later stage in life.

What do you love most about your partner?

Aileen: Everything! He is loving, confident, and very capable. It’s almost like he has superhuman abilities – he can juggle and handle everything. He made all the arrangements for the wedding while overseeing the renovation process for our new house and never stopped work until the day just before the wedding.

He’s the kind of man I know I can rely on. He’s also very resourceful. If I were to encounter a difficult problem, he’d be the first person I’d call. He gives me absolute security and spoils me with his love and attention. I’ll never know how amazing a guy can be until I’d met him.

What made you fall in love with your partner?

Aileen: His effort. I believe time and effort invested in me equates to love, and he is a very busy man. He made long distance dating easy because he does all the heavy lifting in the relationship.

Every week, we take turns to fly to each other. He does not allow us to go on without seeing each other for more than a week. I’d never thought that anyone would be able to make me pack my bags and move out of Singapore. He is special. He gives me a sense of security and I am home wherever he is.

What was the proposal like?

Aileen: I was out on a Sunday afternoon with my friends at an alfresco restaurant when we witnessed another couple’s proposal at a nearby table. A flashmob began right after that, and dancers pretending to be patrons suddenly stood up to join the dance. The lady who was supposedly the one being proposed to later joined in as well, and the attention on her was redirected to me. It was then that I figured that the proposal was staged and the real proposal was actually for me.

Chris then popped out of nowhere with 99 roses, went down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. At that time, we were already in the midst of wedding arrangements and had already set a wedding date. I didn’t think that he was the romantic kind that would pull off and plan a surprise proposal when he was in another country.

Tell us about getting married in Surabaya.

Aileen: I was a very lucky bride. Chris, being the amazing guy that he is, managed to plan and get everything done in four months when others would usually take a whole year to plan. This includes making me a new gown from scratch! All I had to do was to fly in for the gown fittings.

My family and our friends from Singapore flew in and we booked accommodation for them at the hotel that the wedding party was held at. There were many working crew involved as we engaged individual vendors for the wedding cake, orchestra, singers, decorations, lighting, and even special effects. We even hired bridesmaids, groomsmen, and ushers. Our wedding was like a concert with a special guest appearance: Pritta from the reality talent show, The Voice Indonesia. We even gave out seven Samsung smart phones to our guests as a part of the lucky draw!

Weddings in Surabaya tend to be more formal with many things happening all at once. Our parents, siblings, and their immediate families took turns to march in before Chris and I made a grand entrance. There is a section during the wedding party when we invited our parents up on stage and fed them a slice of local lapis cake as a form of our gratitude towards them.

I had so much fun throughout the day. Even as the host myself, I found the whole wedding celebration very entertaining and enjoyable!

What was the theme of the wedding?

Aileen: We wanted the wedding to be more fantasy-like and classical. We had wisterias, crystals, and a chandelier hanging down from the ceiling, and LED mood lighting created a magical purple ambience all around for an extra touch!
