Mint and Colin’s Vibrant and Lively Solemnisation

Mint and Colin’s beautiful wedding was every bit as bubbly, colourful and unique as their personalities.
You can say Mint Leong, 30, emcee, singer and founder of roomiesWorld, and Colin Chang, 32, Assistant Manager, were brought together by their shoes. She struck up a conversation with Colin about his shoes and he realised that she was wearing that pair of boots belonging to a singer at the bar whose voice he had admired. From there, their friendship developed and blossomed into a romance that took their breaths away. Ready to advance into the next chapter of their relationship, the fun-loving and spontaneous couple decided to tie the knot in an intimate and casual celebration with an English garden party theme on 2 October 2016. Catch a glimpse of their fun-filled wedding here!
You were brought together by shoes! Tell us more about that fateful meeting.
Mint: You know how couples are always asked if they can remember what they said to each other when they first met? Well, ours is easy. My first words to Colin after I decided to strike up a conversation with him at a bar we both frequented were: “Wow! Nice white shoes! Are you from Hong Kong?”.
Colin: On the other hand, I noticed that her pair of brown boots looked really familiar. It was then that I remembered ‘meeting’ this vocalist at the bar a couple of months ago. I was seated at a table and she was performing on stage at that time, and I thought she sang pretty well, but since the keyboardist blocked my view of the singer’s face, all I caught a glimpse of was her shoes – which was the very same pair Mint had on when we first met.
What about each other do you like the most?
Colin: Mint’s bubbly personality and her ever-changing and exciting lifestyle add a lot of colours to my life. Although sometimes it’s pretty tiring trying to keep up with her!
Mint: It was Colin’s quiet and easy-going nature that drew me to him. Not only is he able to snuggle up with me and our dog quietly for hours to watch television and play his games while I read, he can also spontaneously participate in events and activities with my family and friends.
We heard Colin’s surprise proposal was not so surprising after all. Tell us more!
Mint: Colin had planned to go down on one knee with a diamond ring and a bouquet of rainbow roses he’d ordered in Hong Kong just before the launch of the fireworks in Disneyland, but his plan was unfortunately discovered by me when we were packing our luggage the night before our trip. My friend Silver Ang and her younger sister were there to witness our special moment too, and were playing “hide-and-seek” the entire day in Disneyland to avoid being spotted by me.
Walk us through the planning for your solemnisation.
Instead of hiring a wedding planner, we had planned our solemnisation by ourselves with the help of our bridal party. Even though we started our planning nearly a year before, we did not manage to confirm most of the details until one to two months before the actual day because we were not able to foresee the flow of the programme and the exact logistics needed to make the day work.
Instead of planning for our solemnisation, traditional Chinese wedding ceremony such as gatecrashing and the tea ceremony, and wedding banquet celebration on the same day as most couples do, we decided to do things a little differently by combining our solemnisation and traditional Chinese wedding ceremony on one day and leave the wedding banquet celebration to next year.
One of the challenges we faced was our differences in working styles and opinions. We would often end up in squabbles and disagreements during the process but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Going through these tough times together helped us understand and learn how to love one another better. As they say, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
What was the actual day like?
Like most married couples will tell you, you won’t get much sleep the night before! We were still up at 3am in the morning finalising the nitty-gritty details for our solemnisation. On the actual day, however, we left the coordinating of the day to our bridal party as we had already met up with them several times to share and discuss our plans, programme and roles for the day. I must say, they did a fantastic job! We were elated to be able to enjoy our special day without worrying about running the show and everything turned out to be so much more than we expected. We are truly blessed.
Your family and friends must have had a blast!
They did! At first, they were a little confused about whether our solemnisation was our official wedding or the wedding party we’re planning for in early 2017. But at the end of the day, they were happy to be part of this unique experience and thoroughly enjoyed themselves with the fun-filled time they had during the celebrations!
Share with us one memorable memory from your wedding day.
Colin: The instant I opened the door to Mint’s room and saw her in her wedding gown and veil, I felt like the luckiest man in the world.
Mint: For me, it was the moment when my family, friends and Colin and I took some random wefies together. In that moment, I felt like all of us, regardless of our status, were strongly bonded together. I felt extremely fortunate to be surrounded by such friendly and fun-loving folks.
