I Knew I Loved You
It was love at first sight when Maolin first met Susy through a common friend back in 2009 while she was on her semester break in Singapore. Distance didn’t mean a thing to this pair of lovebirds, not even when Susy had to shuttle to and fro between Batam and Singapore and Maolin was based in Dubai. Their love took flight and five years and a private proposal atop a rooftop later, they tied the knot in a lavish Great Gatsby-themed affair in Batam.

Tell us about your destination pre-wedding shoot in South Korea. Was there a concept behind the shoot and where were your outfits from?
Susy: We picked South Korea for our pre-wedding shoot because we both loved the place. I loved the look of Jade Garden Arboretum in Gangwon-do, where the k-drama That Year the Wind Blows was filmed, and included it into our list of locations. It took quite a bit of effort looking the location up and seeking approval from the management before we could shoot there.
We wanted the shoot to be casual and fun, and we decided on Ivan from Axioo as our photographer because he was very good at capturing casual and fun shots. Our outfits were also casual-looking, except for the evening gowns which were by Rusly Tjohnardi, who rushed them out in time for my photoshoot!
Share with us any difficulties or funny moments that you encountered during the shoot.
Susy: Dealing with the biting cold weather was a challenge, especially on our first day of shoot, when we were doing our evening gown shots. But mostly, it was filled with fun moments, like the one where Maolin was tasked to carry me while I simply had to look happy. He was complaining about my weight while I couldn’t stop laughing the whole time!
How was your actual day like? Was there a wedding theme?
Susy: The actual day went really smoothly, thanks to our experienced entourage who helped us with the coordination of the day’s events and worked around the traditional matchmaker whom my mother had hired to handle the execution of our traditional customs.
I’ve always loved the glamourous combination of the colours gold, red and black. So I thought, why not do a Great Gatsby themed wedding? Initially, I was worried about having to transport 200 over tiffany chairs, fresh flowers and other decorated items into Batam for the wedding. But thanks to Lily and the hotel’s perfect coordination, we managed to bring all the items required for my big day!
Were there any particular moments during your wedding that were especially memorable or special to you?
Susy: I got emotional the moment the Justice of Peace read his speech on marriage. It was the moment that dawned on me that Maolin was the man I’ll be spending the rest of my life with. It was an extremely overwhelming moment for me.
