Moments of Love in the Orient
Tan Yun Jia, 29, Doctor, and Tan Wee Jian, 27, Doctor, met while undergoing their housemanship in the same hospital, and sparks flew while they saved lives together. On her 29th birthday, he proposed, and happily, she said yes.
Read on to view their love story documented on the streets of Shanghai and Hangzhou.
Why did you decide to shoot your pre-wedding photos overseas?
Yun Jia: I spent a few years in Shanghai for my medical studies. Ever since I got back, I had always wanted to revisit Shanghai. Moreover, Wee Jian hasn’t been to China, so I thought it would be a good opportunity for us to do our pre-wedding photography in Shanghai and Hangzhou.
For Shanghai, we were inspired by the quaint old culture and customs of old Shanghai – hence the focus on architecture and buildings, along with my cheongsam which was made by my mum. For the Hangzhou, we wanted to capture a slice of the beautiful evening scenery of the West Lake.
What was your experience like, flying to a different location for your shoot?
Yun Jia: Over there, the weather was cooler and less humid, so it was more comfortable to be moving and shooting in outdoor throughout the day. Transportation was manageable because we could get a cab easily most of the time. Of course, wearing gowns and moving about does attract some attention from the local crowd!
Overall the two days’ experience for Wee Jian and I was more like traveling and sight-seeing with our awesome photographer documenting our love story. It was exactly what we’d wanted.
What was the most memorable moment of your shoot?
Yun Jia: In Hangzhou, as Wee Jian and I were walking on the bridge in West Lake, I realized although there were a lot of people around us, but we felt like there were only two of us in the whole world. It’s a bit strange but that definitely counts for the most memorable moment for us.
